Monday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 38° / 6°
Monday”s High at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 24 / 3°

We continue with our look & listen to local Nelson music artists. This week we’ll be hearing tracks from lefty mandolin & guitarist, Jeff Vogelgesang. Yep that would be Jan’s Smith’s hubby. You heard Jan week before last right here. Be sure to check out Jeff’s info below and learn how you can have Jeff and Jan come play at your very own event! Stay tuned to hear today’s cut as we head out of weather.

Monday was a nice sunny day, but the heater never really got plugged in! Temps in the valley never made it out of the 30’s and on the mountains never above freezing. Speaking of, we do have a small issue going on with our Wintergreen Nature Foundation Station. We suspect there is a computer network issue at the foundation office preventing our data from getting to the internet. It is now working.

Tuesday brings a mix of wintry precipitation throughout the day as a front works into the area with moisture breaking out ahead of it. This system doesn’t look overly impressive, but with the extreme freeze we’ve recently had it won’t take much to create a few driving problems. We’ll probably start the day with some snow showers, with a change to freezing rain and sleet in the afternoon as temps warm slightly. We may see an entire change over to rain if the temps rise just enough. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for most of the day Tuesday. CANCELED Look for most of the precipitation to come to an end by midnight Tuesday night with clearing skies moving in and a reinforcing shot of cold air by Wednesday.

We might see some scattered snow showers Thursday but nothing to write home over. The remainder of the week looks partly to mostly sunny, but temps continue to be cold. We begin to make it near 50° by Monday with another chance of rain beginning the night before.

Also be sure to check out any of the latest entries on our site by looking to your left under recent posts. We always have lots of neat stuff up there including recent news, restaurant specials, happenings at the local wineries and brewery, just to mention a few!

Genevieve Kitchen-1
This is one happy chef! Genevieve Delfosse prepares some of the delicious food served this past Saturday night.

Folks showed up this past weekend for hearty French Gourmet Dinner to celebrate St-Vincent -the patron saint of winemakers. The celebration is traditionally held in late January in Burgundy. If you have ever had any of the food Genevieve prepares then you know it’s very, very good! Just one of the the 8 menu items was a Heartwarming “Soupe à l’oignon” A classical French soup of homemade beef stock with Ementhaler and Swiss melted over slices of Baguette gently rubbed with garlic. Served with their 2005 Cuvee Laurent.

Thanks for the great shots Hayley!

Stay tuned to hear today’s cut as we head out of weather.

Hope you were wearing the long johns Sunday and Sunday night! It’s been a very cold 24 hours. Don’t look for much relief from the cold temps this coming week, though we’ll moderate a bit for daytime highs as the week progresses. But there is no real warm up in sight! Wind chill readings have frequently been hitting below zero from time to time over the past day. Look for brisk temps again Monday but valley locations will be able to make it above freezing, barely. On the mountains you’ll never see 32° until probably Wednesday when the mid 30’s make it up above 2000 feet.

By Tuesday another system is taking aim at Nelson with chances for a light rain or snow mix. After that, the next chance for significant rain is late next weekend. Temps continue to be great for snow making as the mountains will be in the teens every night as we head toward next weekend.

Strober Snow Ridges

Updated: 11:00 AM EDT Sunday morning (NEXT UPDATE SUNDAY NIGHT)
Though no valley locations received snow on Saturday many mountain tops and ridges did see around an inch of snow. The majority of the winter weather stayed to the south and east of Nelson. Richmond picked up a couple of inches in places. Sunday will be a sunny, but very, very cold day with highs only nearing the upper 20’s in the valley and upper teens up on Wintergreen. Wind chills will be bitterly cold with gusty winds from time to time.

Sunday night will be extremely cold with low in the single digits for everyone. On the mountains you are looking at an overnight low between 0-5°. In the valley at least 7-10° and if the winds subside lower.

Merideth Young at Black Rock Gallery on the mountain sent a couple of pics to us of today’s snow. Thanks Merideth!

We also have a couple of additional weather watcher reports from the mountain as well:

John Taylor wrote:
“At 2:07 pm, it looks like it topped out at 4″. Now light drizzle although the
thermometer reads 27F. Visibility comes and goes, now only 100 yards.”

Larry Luessen wrote:
At 1250 PM it’s snowing heavily here at the 3rd tee on the mountain.
We’ve already picked up 5-6 inches of snow with the present rate at least 1
inch per hour. Temp is 20 degrees. It’s been snowing since just before 7
AM.

Thanks for the pictures & reports guys!
