Tuesday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 58° / 29°
Tuesday’s High at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : OFFLINE 51° / 39° estimated

Before we kick off into weather, don’t forget Nelson’s own Jenn Rhubright from Arrington is our featured music artist all week long. You’ll be hearing live recordings from her first official show in her new gig with Jive Katze from the Gravity Lounge just this past December. You can read lots more about them below today’s weathercast.

Remember to always check out the latest entries on our site by looking to your left under recent posts. We have lots of neat stuff up there including recent news, restaurant specials, happenings at the local wineries and the brewery, just to mention a few! Speaking of, we have been keeping up with the latest on the opening of The Dogwood Restaurant in Nellysford. Tuesday they posted their opening date for next week. Read details by clicking here.

Tuesday was certainly a day that felt like Spring. We started the day with some sprinkles. Though skies remained mostly cloudy temps still made it near 60° in the valley and into the 50’s along the BRP. Lots of the snow pack and ice in the rivers at higher elevations started thawing like the shot above we got on the way up to Montebello Country Store yesterday. Winds started kicking up in the afternoon, and by last night they were howling at times. There are WIND ADVISORIES OR WARNINGS CANCELED FOR NELSON out for much of the area through the part of the afternoon. You can always see the latest weather alerts by checking the RSS Weather Alerts feeds directly under the cover photo on the upper left hand side of your screen. Showers moved across the area last night as well in advance of a very strong cold front which is helping to fuel the strong winds.

Wednesday won’t feel anywhere as nice as yesterday. We will see the winds settle down in the late afternoon setting the stage for a very cold night. By Thursday all eyes are on a developing storm system that may bring freezing rain to parts of Virginia. Forecasters in both the Blacksburg and D.C NWS offices are making reference to this possibility.

NWS DC:
Long term /Wednesday night through Monday/…
..significant ice storm possible across portions of forecast area
late Thursday night…

NWS Blacksburg:
This system looks to
either produce rain/freezing rain. By Friday morning..

I want to STRESS this is not a sure bet right now and the better potential is along and west of the BRP at this time. But there are a few things in play that could make it happen and we’ll just have to watch it very closely over the next 24 hours. The latest updates will be posted here as forecasts become more clear. Regardless it looks like the event would start late Thursday night into Friday morning if it pans out. I’ll keep you posted along the way.

By Friday night, skies become partly cloudy setting the stage for a really nice weekend with temps in the mid 50’s for valley highs and mid to upper 40’s for the mountains.

According to the online urban dictionary a “Jive Cat” is “not the ordinary person you or your homeboys would hang out with”. And what has a less jiving, less hip and less swinging reputation than a “German Jazz Cat” anyway? – Well, Jive Katze is not your ordinary Jazz band.
Jive Katze is the newest addition to the diverse Charlottesville music scene. They combine vocal jazz in the tradition of Billy Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald with contemporary forms and concepts influenced by Brad Mehldau, and Kenny Werner.

Jenn Rhubright’s intimate renditions of jazz classics meet the sensitive and versatile playing of German born pianist, Gerrit Roessler. Jenn contributes her unorthodox approach to music as well as her vast experience with rock and pop from her nationally acclaimed bands Clare Quilty and The Dirty Dishes. Gerrit on the other hand, has a background as a formally trained jazz musician and paid his dues playing mostly in Europe and the US with his award winning band Mars Attacks.

It is this difference, and the artistic tension that makes this project so interesting: Sometimes only subtly and carefully altering the divine masters, sometimes overhauling them drastically to create something entirely new. Although they are not a retro-jazz band that attempts to re-enact an alleged golden past, they are respectfully aware of the vast tradition of vocal jazz and are attempting to translate it into the world of today. The result is an intimate and energetic performance that is strongly shared by the audience during their performances.

Although Jive Katze is conceptualized as a duo, Jenn and Gerrit are frequently backed up by Bassist David Cosper from South Carolina and Drummer Granville Mullings from New York.

Jive Katze is not in it for the money. They play for their love of music. That is why they decided to support a non-profit organization that is dedicated “to revitalizing the music and cultural community within the neighborhoods of New Orleans by helping its tradition bearers return to and stay at home.” By financially and actively engaging with “Sweet Home New Orleans” (http://www.sweethomeneworleans.org) Jive Katze feel they are reaching out to a vast musical tradition and heritage on more than the mere artistic level.

Bob Ward 2007
Bob Ward last summer getting recognition for his outstanding work in the Nelson Rotary Club

Today I got a phone call from a friend of our that told us Bob Ward of Nellysford passed away over the weekend. I didn’t know Bob for very long, probably a couple of years. I just sat and ate lunch with Bob a few weeks ago at Basic Necessities at the table out front in the window. He had stopped by on the way to one of the countless doctor appointments he always had to make. I remember the place was packed but I was eating alone. I asked Bob to sit down and have his soup with me. We talked about his past career, how life changes on your at the turn of a dime and how much he loved all of the gals that worked at Basic. “I just love coming here and I love the people in Nelson, what a great place to live,” Bob told me.

Rotary Group
Last summer in the picture above his fellow Rotary members honored Bob for his hard work in the Nelson Rotary Club. Bob always kept trying to get me to join at every turn.

Though Bob had been through a lot over the past year, his health a constant challenge, he always smiled and always carried on great conversation whenever I would see him. We would often laugh about running into each other so much at Basic Necessities, almost keeping score to see who was there the most!

Though we were never real close friends, Bob was just one of the many faces that makes Nelson County feel like home and inviting. A face I’ll miss seeing as part of this great place he loved so much.

We’ll miss you Bob, but never forget you.

Cheers up there fellow!

Several things I want to talk about first before we head into the weather. Yesterday I got the news that a familiar face to many of here in Nelson, especially on the Rockfish side of the county, that Bob Ward of Nellysford died over the weekend. Bob was a heck of a guy … I never got to know Bob as a personal friend but we’d always have great conversations when we would meet out and about. You can read lots more about Bob by clicking here. Bob was one of the good guys!

Also want to send out a big thanks to Tom Brown with Wintergreen’s Adaptive Ski program for sending in the picture we used today up at the top. They completed their 4th annual Wounded Warriors Weekend at Wintergreen. It’s always an inspirational time for these brave men and women, some who come back year after year. Jenn Rhubright of Jive Katze

And finally, thanks to Jenn Rhubright from right here in Nelson County. Jenn maybe a familiar name to you. She was the lead singer of the now defunct band Clare Quilty and later The Dirty Dishes. She’s also a top notch photographer, some of her photography appearing in the print version of NCL. Recently Jenn’s cranked up with Jive Katze the newest addition to the diverse Charlottesville music scene. They combine vocal jazz in the tradition of Billy Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald with contemporary forms and concepts influenced by Brad Mehldau, and Kenny Werner.

Jenn will be our featured music artist until next Monday so sit back and enjoy at the end of our weather cast. You’ll be hearing live recordings from their first official show at Gravity Lounge in December. You can read more about them below today’s weather. You may even want to make a martini for these!

Monday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 53° / 19°
Monday’s High at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 46° / 20°

Monday was a wonderful day weather wise. Temps made it to the lower 50’s for the valley while the mountains even managed to pull out some mid 40’s. It was the nicest day so far for 2008, and a little reminder that even through all of the freezing temps, spring is out there on the horizon somewhere, or as my dad says if he can make it February, then he can coast the rest of the way. By-the-way spring officially starts in just under two month on March 20th!

Tuesday will be a day of transition, though still warm, with temps nearing 60°, winds will begin picking up in the afternoon with widespread rain moving in by nightfall. Gusty winds really kick up later sometimes reaching 40-50 MPH from the SW after midnight. In the mountains there may be a period of snow in the early morning hours of Wednesday before the precipitation comes to an end. Wednesday will still be a breezy day with Thursday sunny and pleasant.

NWS Forecasters mention the possibility of freezing rain in the forecast late Thursday night, more likely into the morning hours Friday. Right now it still appears to be too warm for that kind of event, but we’ll see how it shapes up!

Wounded Warriors Weekend
Wintergreen, Mountain Virginia

Group PhotoWW

This past weekend was one of mainly smiles as Wintergreen Adaptive Skiing held it’s 4th annual Wounded Warriors Weekend at Wintergreen Resort. The Wounded Warrior Weekend has grown steadily from its first year when six injured Warriors from Walter Reed Army Medical Center came to Wintergreen to enjoy adaptive snow sports as part of the rehabilitation from their terrible injuries. This year twenty-five warriors, their guests, and health care professionals – almost 60 people in all returned to Wintergreen Resort.

WW-pic2

Captain Lonnie Moore, US Army(R), a participant in every Wounded Warrior Weekend, said “I feel gratitude to WAS because skiing helped me get off my tail and get back to thriving, goal setting, and living after my injury.” In April 2004, Captain Moore lost his right leg outside Ramadhi , Iraq when an RPG slammed into his Bradley Fighting Vehicle. Nine months later he was at Wintergreen learning to ski on his one good leg.

Shortly after his experience at Wintergreen, Moore retired from the Army and went to work for the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to help severely injured service members to aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs. Today, Moore continues to help other severely injured servicemen and women as the Western Area Director for the Florida-based Wounded Warrior Project.

WW-2 Vertical

The mission of Wintergreen Adaptive Skiing is to establish, operate, and maintain educational programs that encourage children, teenagers, and adults with disabilities to learn to ski. The program provides standard and adaptive equipment, as well as trained volunteer instructors, both adult and teenaged. Skiing offers disabled individuals profound therapeutic benefits, including increased physical vitality and stamina, as well as important improvements in overall mental and emotional health.

Sunday’s High at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 33° / 23°

This past weekend was a quiet one across Central Virginia and Nelson County. A few clouds moved across the area from time to time but no real weather systems had any impact. Monday will be a very nice day, one of the nicest in a couple of weeks. Sunny skies and warmer temps in the 50’s will make it feel great. By Tuesday we’ll begin to see the effects of another system headed toward Nelson. By Tuesday afternoon into the night we’ll see rain developing with pretty good chances for a widespread rain event. Later in the week rain and snow both enter the forecast.

No terribly cold temperatures are headed our way over the forecast period with daytime highs and lows near seasonal averages.

Wednesday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 52° / 28°

We continue with our look & listen to local Nelson music artists. This week we’ll be hearing tracks from lefty mandolin & guitarist, Jeff Vogelgesang. Yep that would be Jan’s Smith’s hubby. You heard Jan week before last right here. Be sure to check out Jeff’s info below and learn how you can have Jeff and Jan come play at your very own event! Stay tuned to hear today’s cut as we head out of weather.

Want to point out a couple of things before kicking off the weather. You can click here to see more info about UVa Community Credit Union opening their newest branch in Nellysford. And an update on The Dogwood Restaurant’s opening in Nellysford as well. I spoke to owner Dennis Hunt on Wednesday and they are very, very close.

Wednesday was one of the nicest days in a long time. Temperatures in the valley warmed to the low 50’s making it feel a little like early spring. Skies were sunny like the photo above taken from the deck at Stoney Creek Bar & Grill. Winds were light, so it was a nice break from the bitterly cold temperatures we’ve seen lately. Unfortunately, Thursday we’re headed back to true winter weather. Though we may start the day with some sun, skies will turn mostly cloudy with snow showers, in particular on the mountains. This is not a system to get worked up over, but we’ll see some bursts of snow from time to time throughout the day. Winds will kick up by afternoon as well sometimes reaching 30 MPH from the NW with higher gusts on the mountaintops.

By Thursday night skies begin clearing out with temperatures dropping into the teens again for valley lows and around 5-10 degrees on the mountains. Friday will be cold, with a little warming by the weekend. The weekend looks variably cloudy with ample sunshine but some clouds to boot. No major precipitation is on the horizon again until Tuesday of next week.

Smith RIC Sunset

Want to say thank you to Tom & Betsy Smith of Richmond. They sent us today’s weather photo. Yea, it looks a lot like one Ann Strober sent last week. That’s because they have a place near hers in Nellysford. The Smith’s also sent a really nice e-mail with their photo:

Just writing to you and Yvette again to say how much we LOVE Nelson County Life and look forward to every issue. We patronize your advertisers, and have made several good contacts for handyman and other services, so be sure to let your advertisers know that your readers are paying attention.

I’m enclosing several photographs my wife took last week in Nellysford before the snow. We have a house near Ann Strober and share an enjoyment of photography. Feel free to use these as you see fit.

Again, thanks for a great paper!! It truly is PRICELESS!

Tuesday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 39° / 21°
Tuesday”s High at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 38° / 13°

Tuesday was pretty much as predicted. Not a lot of precipitation, and what did fall wasn’t a factor. We saw some sleet across much of Central Virgina. In the higher elevations large snowflakes fell for a short time, but no one really had any accumulation since the temperatures were just above freezing by the time the moisture arrived. There’s a chance for snow showers again on Thursday, possibly beginning as early as Wednesday night, but just like the last system, this doesn’t look too impressive. Just some scattered snow showers, enough to let you know winter is alive.

After Thursday’s system we get some reinforcing cold air. By the end of the upcoming weekend we have a gradual warm up and chances for rain by Sunday. Temps Sunday into Monday begin working toward the 50° mark.

Remember to check out the latest entries on our site by looking to your left under recent posts. We have lots of neat stuff up there including recent news, restaurant specials, happenings at the local wineries and the brewery, just to mention a few!
