John White Posed
We continue our look and listen to local Nelson music artists. Ironically from Arrington and the Colleen area again this week is, John White. As you know we feature all kinds of music artists and John is a pro at the piano, traveling all over the country. This past December he sold his 40,000th CD! Way to go! You’ll be hearing selections from John’s latest CD, At My Leisure, released last year. Many of you know John from his days as a teacher right here in Nelson County, Virginia. You can read more about John below today’s weather cast.

The nasty icy weather last week all seems like a bad memory now. Did you feel how warm it was Sunday? That was a nice break from the cold weather we had back in January. Don’t be looking for any kind of freezing cold weather for the next several days, as a matter of fact we are talking 70’s, yep 70’s by Tuesday! Sunday even made it to the middle 60’s in the valley with low and mid 50’s on the mountains.

Monday there’s a chance of scattered showers in the morning then we’ll see some sun throughout the day. By very late in the day toward dark, skies cloud back up again with showers forming overnight.

Warm temps, windy conditions, and rain move in by Tuesday in advance of another front. We may have some moderate to heavy rain with this system. I don’t see any wintry precipitation on the horizon over the next several days. No real cold weather is out there either.

The Dogwood Sign

Updated 1.29.08
NCL has confirmed The Dogwood in Nellysford will open Monday February 4, 2008 for lunch.

See you there!
NCL

Previous post:

It appears the ongoing saga of getting The Dogwood open, Nellysford’s newest restaurant, is about to end. As we have been updating you over the past year or so, the owners of the already established and popular Dogwood Cafe in Amherst are finally getting the doors of their Nelson restaurant open.

I spoke with Dennis Hunt Wednesday afternoon and all he is now waiting on is a final walk through by the health department. The regular local inspector has been off for a couple of weeks and they are just now getting someone else from that agency to come out and give them the thumbs up. Dennis said it looks like they will be opening about a week from this coming Monday. That would put opening on February 4th.

A new billboard sign has been installed in front of the restaurant just below their regular sign that will have definite opening details over the coming days, so be sure to check it out from time to time for the exact date.

We know these guys have had setback after setback over the past 18-24 months and wish them the best on getting open!

Dennis says they will start with a limited lunch menu first, (he says only 20 items or so – that doesn’t sound limited to me, that sounds great!) expanding to dinner shortly thereafter, and opening for breakfast as warmer weather arrives after the winter season. I know folks will be excited about the breakfast too Dennis!

Keep Watching!

Saturday’s High / Low at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 51°/25°

Don’t forget Nelson’s own Jenn Rhubright from Arrington is our featured music artist this weekend. You’ll be hearing live recordings from her first official show in her new gig with Jive Katze from the Gravity Lounge just this past December. You can read lots more about them below today’s weathercast.

The ice storm on Friday morning is now history. Most areas in and near Nelson saw a respectable amount of ice accumulation on trees and power lines, but for the most part the roads were in decent shape. There were a few exceptions as you worked into the higher altitudes. A semi lost control going up Brent’s Mountain Friday morning and had a tough time getting traction due to the icing. Some isolated areas lost electric power, but all in all Nelson faired really well. By late afternoon Friday peeks of sunshine even came out melting lots of the ice left hanging in the trees or on power lines. We didn’t even reach our daily high until late Friday when the sunshine finally edged the mercury to near 40°.

Friday evening expect some breezy winds behind the cold front as it makes it’s way off to the east.

By Monday chances for rain reenter the the forecast. Chances for rain stay in the forecast for the first few days of next week, temperatures become very mild by Tuesday reaching the upper 60’s.

Next week Monday, rain developing by late afternoon . Highs around 50° valley and mid 40’s mountains. By Tuesday temps warm to near 70° valley and low 60’s mountains. According to the online urban dictionary a “Jive Cat” is “not the ordinary person you or your homeboys would hang out with”. And what has a less jiving, less hip and less swinging reputation than a “German Jazz Cat” anyway? – Well, Jive Katze is not your ordinary Jazz band.
Jive Katze is the newest addition to the diverse Charlottesville music scene. They combine vocal jazz in the tradition of Billy Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald with contemporary forms and concepts influenced by Brad Mehldau, and Kenny Werner.

Jenn Rhubright’s intimate renditions of jazz classics meet the sensitive and versatile playing of German born pianist, Gerrit Roessler. Jenn contributes her unorthodox approach to music as well as her vast experience with rock and pop from her nationally acclaimed bands Clare Quilty and The Dirty Dishes. Gerrit on the other hand, has a background as a formally trained jazz musician and paid his dues playing mostly in Europe and the US with his award winning band Mars Attacks.

It is this difference, and the artistic tension that makes this project so interesting: Sometimes only subtly and carefully altering the divine masters, sometimes overhauling them drastically to create something entirely new. Although they are not a retro-jazz band that attempts to re-enact an alleged golden past, they are respectfully aware of the vast tradition of vocal jazz and are attempting to translate it into the world of today. The result is an intimate and energetic performance that is strongly shared by the audience during their performances.

Although Jive Katze is conceptualized as a duo, Jenn and Gerrit are frequently backed up by Bassist David Cosper from South Carolina and Drummer Granville Mullings from New York.

Jive Katze is not in it for the money. They play for their love of music. That is why they decided to support a non-profit organization that is dedicated “to revitalizing the music and cultural community within the neighborhoods of New Orleans by helping its tradition bearers return to and stay at home.” By financially and actively engaging with “Sweet Home New Orleans” (http://www.sweethomeneworleans.org) Jive Katze feel they are reaching out to a vast musical tradition and heritage on more than the mere artistic level.

You can read lots more about them below today’s weathercast.

Thursday was a nice day across Nelson and Central Virginia as light winds and mostly sunny skies dominated the weather. Our NCL Mountain Photographer, Christina Kline caught this beautiful sunrise above from the overlook above Wintergreen Resort. Thursday evening things changed pretty quickly with a notable winter storm approaching. Most of the major precipitation began after midnight. A Winter Storm Warning began at 2 AM for Nelson and areas west. To the south ice storm warnings are in effect and east advisories. Remember you can always see the very latest alerts by checking the RSS feeds just below the cover photo on your upper left.

In the hazardous weather outlook the NWS describes the winter situation forming:

.
WINDS ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE SYSTEM MAY GUST BETWEEN 30 AND 40
MPH…MAINLY ALONG HIGHER RIDGE TOPS ACROSS THE POTOMAC HIGHLANDS
LATE TODAY AND TONIGHT. ANY LOCATIONS THAT RECEIVE ACCUMULATING
ICE COULD SEE DOWNING OF TREES AND POWER LINES..

Temps were below freezing as the rain began, freezing on contact. Though most roads were in fairly good shape, power lines and trees have a moderate coating of ice early Friday morning. Especially in higher elevations. By roughly mid-morning to noon temps should rise enough for the freezing mess to change to just plain old rain.

By the weekend, look for sunny skies and temps warming the 50’s with slightly cooler temps on the mountains.

Wednesday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 50° / 40°

You’ll be hearing live recordings from her first official show in her new gig with Jive Katze from the Gravity Lounge just this past December. You can read lots more about them below today’s weathercast.

Wednesday started as a windy day with gusts continuing into the early afternoon. Though skies were pretty much sunny, you could see a few high thin clouds way up in the sky like those above the NCL-Wintergreen Winery Weathernet station in the photo above. We’ll be sunny most of the day, but look for clouds to thicken by late afternoon in advance of the next major weather maker for Nelson and Central Virginia.

The big weather news right now is a possible winter storm that will affect the area late Thursday into Friday. Right now the NWS is discussing the potential in their hazardous weather outlook:

A WINTER STORM WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED LATE TONIGHT INTO FRIDAY
FROM THE FAR NORTHWEST BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON SUBURBS…THE
SHENANDOAH VALLEY…WEST TO THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS. THERE IS
THE POTENTIAL FOR A QUARTER INCH OF ICE ACCUMULATION.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY

WINDS ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE SYSTEM MAY GUST BETWEEN 30 AND 40
MPH…MAINLY ALONG HIGHER RIDGE TOPS ACROSS THE POTOMAC HIGHLAND
REGION…LATE FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT. ANY LOCATIONS THAT RECEIVE
ACCUMULATING ICE COULD SEE SIGNIFICANT DOWNING OF TREES AND POWER
LINES. A CHANGEOVER TO ALL RAIN DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS MAY
HELP MELT ANY ACCUMULATED ICE ACROSS THIS REGION…THOUGH
SHELTERED VALLEYS OF THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS MAY CONTINUE TO
STAY NEAR FREEZING AND REMAIN AT RISK. INTERESTED PARTIES SHOULD
MONITOR UPDATES TO FORECAST

.

Right now it looks like the best time for freezing rain to begin would be around midnight Thursday night into Friday morning, though isolated pockets of winter weather may break out in the late evening hours. Trouble begins late since the temps will be at or slightly below freezing when the moisture arrives. So we’ll see that mix of snow and freezing rain until the temps warm up Friday eventually to the low 40’s. More updates on this will be forthcoming later during today as the system gets closer.

FROM THE SOUTHWEST TONIGHT THROUGH THE DAY FRIDAY. PRECIPITATION
ONSET ACROSS CENTRAL VIRGINIA APPEARS TO BE AFTER MIDNIGHT…
WHILE PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ACROSS NORTHERN MARYLAND
NEAR THE PENNSYLVANIA BORDER A COUPLE HOURS BEFORE SUNRISE.

WEST OF I-95 PRECIPITATION WILL BEGIN AS SLEET BEFORE CHANGING TO
FREEZING RAIN. IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY…IN THE VICINITY OF I-
81…TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN SUBFREEZING THROUGHOUT
THE NIGHT. PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO FALL AS RAIN OVERNIGHT…
FREEZING ON CONTACT WITH TREES AND ROADS. BY FRIDAY MORNING UP TO
ONE QUARTER INCH OF ICE ACCUMULATION IS POSSIBLE.

IF CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO INDICATE THESE AMOUNTS OF ICE…A
WINTER STORM WARNING WILL LIKELY BE ISSUED LATER TODAY.

AS THE SYSTEM DEPARTS THE AREA LATE FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT…
WIND GUSTS OF 30 TO 40 MPH WILL BE POSSIBLE. THIS COULD
CONTRIBUTE TO THE DOWNING OF TREES AND POWER LINES WHERE ICE
COATS THESE SURFACES. POWER OUTAGES WILL BE POSSIBLE FRIDAY
NIGHT.

A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT
ICE AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS THAT MAY IMPACT TRAVEL. CONTINUE TO
MONITOR THE LATEST FORECASTS.
