Updated : 9:29 PM EST 2.10.08

NCL spoke with Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks late this evening and he says the only fire that is still actively being worked is the one on Laurel Road in the Shipman area. “You can still see some of the trees and stumps glowing, but no structures are involved and it’s contained in the wooded areas,” says Brooks. Many people that earlier had been evacuated from their homes have been allowed back in. Bulldozers have been making fire breaks to contain the fires and thus far seems to have been working.

More if the situation changes.
NCL

The majority of the fires across Nelson County are now mostly contained. Fire personnel are still on the scene and are still standing by for calls as of early evening, but the situation is improving dramatically.

Brush 6 & 151

Brush Fire-33

Over the past two to three hours afternoon every available fire and rescue unit in Nelson County, Virginia was called into service due to a major outbreak of brush and forest fires across the county. As we talked about in our forecast earlier, a Red Flag Warning was issued by the NWS for the likelihood of fires breaking out due to very high winds and low humidity across the area. There are some isolated areas of the county without electric power as well.

Our NCL-Tiger Fuel Weathernet Station in Lovingston has already recorded a 50 MPH wind gust this afternoon. Winds blowing in the 25-40 MPH range are common at many other NCL sites like NCL Wintergreen Nature Foundation on the mountain and NCL-Delfosse Winery & Vineyard in Faber. Many other stations are showing sustained winds in the 20-30 MPH range as well.

As of 5:37 PM EST here’s a list of active fires we know are being worked:

-Route 6 & 151 Martin’s Store – burning but under control
-Wheeler’s Cove – road blocked by downed power lines – fire crews having difficulty getting to scene
-Tye River near Nelson / Amherst Line – crews enrouteunder control
-Peavine Lane closed to all but fire personnel
-Laurel Road area – At 4:20 PM units on the scene report this fire involves 40-50 acres
-Major brush fire underway near Shipman in East Nelson County
-Reports of brush fire Route 626 in the vicinity of Howardsville
-5 Miles South of Roseland along Route 151 – Grass Fire – Units on scene extinguishing fire
-Hubbard’s Hill Lane tree across power line with fire – extinguished
-Roseland Road – tree on power line with fire – extinguished
-Browning’s Cove Road numerous fires reported in the area at 5:20 PM

Much of the activity near Laurel, Wheeler’s and Shipman are likely part of the same major forest fire.

Saturday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 64°/34°
Saturday’s High at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 52°/32°

The weekend has been perfect thus far, but look for some pretty major changes as we wind up the weekend on Sunday. A very strong cold front will move through early in the day ushering in much colder temperatures and very gusty winds. Various watches and warnings involving high winds and fire danger have been issued for Sunday across the entire area. To see the most updated information click on the county specific information under the RSS Feeds on the upper left hand side of the screen just under the cover photo. That will always be the latest information from the NWS.

By Sunday night temperatures plummet to the low teens in the valley and from 0° to 5° in the mountains. Combine that with gusty winds, and wind chill values will drop below zero at many locations by Monday morning. After a cold day Monday, temperature moderate a bit later in the week with chances for rain in the valley and snow in the mountains.

Spruce Creek Gallery’s jewelry trunk show continues Sunday February10th, 2008 featuring local jewelers Tavia Brown, Avery Groves and Martha McLeaod Kieth from noon until 5 pm.

Wintergreen Winery continues it’s Valentine Celebration this weekend Sunday, from 10 am until 5pm. The complimentary candlelit tasting will feature their just released Raspberry dessert wine paired with organic milk and dark chocolate, French truffles and homemade Virginia fudge & much more.

Wednesday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 73°/60°
Wednesday’s High at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 59°/52°

We continue our look and listen of local Nelson music artist John White. This past December he sold his 40,000th CD! You’ll be hearing selections from John’s latest CD, At My Leisure, released last year. Many of you know John from his days as a teacher right here in Nelson County, Virginia. You can read more about John below today’s weather cast.

Say so long to the warmer weather for awhile. Colder temps are back on the way. By Sunday, our afternoon high will be roughly 40 degrees cooler than we saw for a Wednesday high. Even today it will be about 20 degrees cooler than yesterday. The severe weather that plagued much of the country Tuesday night into Wednesday lost it’s punch by the time it reached the east coast. Though we had some scattered severe thunderstorms, the dynamics just weren’t there, thankfully, for the kind of severe weather event seen back in Tennessee and Arkansas.

That’s the very weather I once lived in and reported on year after year. Tornadoes were commonplace back there, and as a matter of fact just before moving to Virginia permanently, back in May 2003, I was on air doing weather the night a different tornado hit Union University in Jackson, TN killing 11 people in another section of the downtown area. I don’t miss that kind of weather at all and when folks tell me we have bad storms here in the Blue Ridge I just kinda smile. Tornado wise we just don’t get the severity. Hurricanes, that’s a different story for another day!

We did pick up some light rain Wednesday and Wednesday night, and the winds started kicking up by late afternoon into the evening. Though we manage to hit the mid 50’s Thursday, we won’t make it out of the 30’s for the end of the weekend. There’s a chance for rain Saturday. Next week temperatures are more seasonal.

Nelson Physical Therapy Owner, Agnes Schrider

Many of you know, Agnes Schrider, as either the best physical therapist in the world, or as the writer of The Perfect Fit (page 40 lower left) each month in Nelson County Life Magazine.

Agnes is about to lose her hair for a really, really good cause. Here’s what Agnes sent us just the other day:

Dear Friends,
Looking to see another part of me that you haven’t seen before? That no one has seen before? Well, you won’t have to wait to long to see my head shaved and the Q ball shining! In honor of kids under going chemotherapy ( who in the process lose their hair) and to raise funds for cancer treatment and research, “Team Rockfish” will be shaving our heads for charity on March 29, 2008 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
We are working through St. Baldrick’s Foundation which began in 1999 by three friends who wanted to give back to the community. On a “I will if you will” dare, they decided to shave their heads on March 17 (St. Patrick’s day) and raise $17,000. Well, they raised $104,000. Since then, St. Baldrick’s Foundation has spread to over 18 countries and 46 states raising over $34 million dollars! Check out the website: StBaldricks.org.
We all know someone, whether a family or friend, who has been touched by cancer. The treatment and physical and emotional stress is great. It must be even worse for a child. Especially during a time when they should be relishing in the joys of childhood.
So, please sponsor me and help to support the children. Please make a generous donation. There is a donation form also attached in this email. Fill it out and return it to me and I will mail it in to the foundation. Once the shears have hit my little head, I’ll be sending you a special photo – chipmunk cheeks, big teeth and bald head! Look out- it could scare your pets!

All the best to you and to your family and friends with cancer.

Shine On!

Love,
Agnes

P.S. Cool hats are also welcome!

Agnes is a member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church where pastor David Cameron recently gave an inspiring sermon about this topic. It was such a moving service that many members in the church have joined in the effort. Jamie Heard recently e-mailed that she would be participating as well. You can read the sermon David gave by clicking here.

Of course we are going to do anything we can to help Agnes and the others out! Below, you will find a downloadable form you can print off and send in for Agnes! We’ll be keeping you posted on how she’s doing!

Tuesday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 78°/39°
Tuesday’s High at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 64°/53°

Remember we continue our look and listen to local Nelson music artist John White. This past December he sold his 40,000th CD! You’ll be hearing selections from John’s latest CD, At My Leisure, released last year. Many of you know John from his days as a teacher right here in Nelson County, Virginia. You can read more about John below today’s weather cast.

Area of Severe Weather Possibility For Wednesday

Tuesday was a very Spring like day with temperatures in the valley in the mid to upper 70’s for afternoon highs. Though unusual, certainly not unheard of. Simply a prelude to Spring weather on it’s way in a few weeks. To our west, the overnight story has many areas of the mid south waking up to damage from very severe weather and deadly tornadoes, as very warm temperatures worked in. Today we can expect those warm temperatures back in the 70’s again with showers and thunderstorms by afternoon here in Central Virginia. Some strong thunderstorms could breakout later today. The area of concern in the Eastern U.S. is indicated above on the Storm Prediction Center’s Slight Risk Area. You can click on that map for more detailed discussion regarding the Mid Atlantic area. Though much of the energy from the storms Tuesday will have diminished, I can’t rule out some of these getting a bit angry given the very warm temps and moisture in place across our area.

We won’t see anything like the mid-south did, but it’s worth keeping an eye on as the storm march eastward today. Once out of the area, look for seasonal temperatures and and more winter feeling weather to make a return by the weekend. Even Thursday we’re looking at highs some 20 degrees cooler than today.

You’ll be hearing selections from John’s latest CD, At My Leisure, released last year. Many of you know John from his days as a teacher right here in Nelson County, Virginia. You can read more about John below today’s weather cast.

Winter has left the building, at least for a few days. Monday started with some showers early, then peeks of sun, then showers, then more sun. No one got any real rainfall, but it was a very pleasant day. If you liked Monday, you’ll love Tuesday. Temps will easily reach the lower 70’s in the valley and the mid 60’s on the mountains as a warm front moves through the. Tuesday will be much like yesterday as far as the rain. We’ll start with some light showers and a little fog, then partly sunny, then more showers late. Winds will begin kicking up as well.

By late Wednesday afternoon a cold front to our west arrives and the clash with the warmer air in Central Virginia may even trigger a thunderstorm or two. This shouldn’t be of much concern but a rumble here or there certainly isn’t out of the question. To our west lots of areas from my old stomping ground in the mid-south near Memphis will be under the gun for very severe weather. By the time it all gets here hours later it will have lost much of it’s punch. By the weekend temps finally cool back down to near seasonal normals.
