Novelist and Virginian Phyllis A. Whitney, whose romantic suspense tales sold millions of copies and earned her top accolades from the Mystery Writers of America, has died, her son-in-law said. She was 104.

Whitney died Feb. 8 in a Charlottesville hospital, not far from her home in Nelson County, said her son-in-law, Ed Pearson.

Whitney wrote more than 75 books, including three textbooks, and had about a hundred short stories published since the 1940s.

Whitney’s last novel, “Amethyst Dreams,” was published in 1997. She began working on her autobiography at 102.

In 1961, Whitney’s sixth juvenile mystery “Mystery of the Haunted Pool” received the prestigious Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America for the best children’s mystery story of the year. She won the award again three years later for her book “Mystery of the Hidden Hand.”

In 1988, Whitney was named a Grand Master, the Mystery Writers of America’s highest honor. In 1990, she received the Agatha award, for traditional mystery works typical of Agatha Christie.

Born in 1903 in Yokohama, Japan, to American parents, Whitney lived in the Philippines and China before coming to the United States at 15. She had already begun writing at the age of 12 while a student in a missionary school in China.

Earlier in her life, Whitney worked in bookstores and libraries, read manuscripts and lectured before eventually landing a job as a children’s book editor for the Chicago Sun and later in a similar job with The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Wednesday’s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 45°/31° – 0.16″ Rainfall
Wednesday’s High / Low at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 49°/18° – 0.69″ Rainfall

If you’re sick of yucky weather, hang on, we have improving conditions for the next couple of days! First, thanks to Heidi Crandall of Roseland for today’s weather photo. This is just below Horseshoe Mountain at Roseland. That’s also where our NCL-Hatcreek Farm Weathernet station lives. Heidi takes care of that station for us which reports from that end of the county. Appreciate Heidi sending that photo in to us.

That’s pretty much what it looked like for the first half of the day Wednesday. Freezing temps allowed the rain that fell overnight to coat everything on contact. It was toward midday before we finally got warm enough to begin a thaw. Ironically, it was warmer on the mountain than it was in the valley thanks to a temperature inversion. By dark yesterday we saw some light snow falling across the area with gusty NW winds.

Thursday promises to be a much nicer day as sunshine works in, but it will still feel pretty chilly with breezy winds blowing from the NW in the morning gusting as high as 30 MPH. By afternoon the winds die down a bit and become more southerly setting up a pretty nice Friday with highs in the mid 50’s in the valley. The holiday weekend looks dry until Sunday afternoon and evening when rain moves back in.

Whether playing solo, or accompanied by her six-piece band, Robin Wynn’s shows are marked with high energy and good spirits, with her distinctive, smooth-like-honey/sharp-as-a-tack vocals cresting the wave. With her ear for hooks, Robin writes music you swear you’ve heard before, yet is always unique and fresh, often drawing comparisons to Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams at her most “Americana,” Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Liz Phair at her rockingest.

A hard-working bunch of players, Robin and her band performed over a hundred shows up and down the east coast in 2006, gathering enthusiasts at every stop. Tuesday”s High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 32°/25°
Tuesday’s High / Low at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 32°/32°

Before I hit the weather, Sara Pope over at Monkeyclaus and ihanuman.com in Beech Grove says bring on more Robin Wynn, she dropped us this quick note Tuesday:

Sara Writes:
Monkeyclaus loves Robyn Winn! More More More..

Not a problem Sara, will do, at the end of today’s cast!

Tuesday ended up being a very nasty day toward dark as freezing rain settled in across the entire area. Very cold air became dammed up next to the mountains which allowed rain that fell late in the day to freeze on contact. That caused several accidents in Nelson and surrounding counties. Brent’s Mountain, which is notorious for freezing up in winter weather had several cars that could not make it up the mountain blocking the road. Other accidents occurred on U.S. 29 at Woods Mill. As the night wore on temperatures slowly started rising allowing the freezing rain begin turning to plain rain in some areas.

Wednesday look for rain in the morning, perhaps changing back to freezing rain or snow in the afternoon as temperatures begin a fall late in the day. By Wednesday night some light snow is possible as another burst of low pressure gets nearby. On the mountains an inch or two of snow is not out of the question by late Wednesday night. I can’t totally rule out some snow accumulation in the valley since this new low pressure area is forecast to form. I’ll keep an eye on that over the next few hours.

REMEMBER You can always see the latest weather alerts on the left hand side of your screen under the cover photo where it says RSS Feeds.

By Thursday sunny skies move back in. A more significant storm system may affect the area by the end of the weekend.

Thanks to John Taylor on Wintergreen Mountain for sending us today’s weather photo above. You have to look really hard, but off in the distance you can see that plume of smoke rising just above those tiny twigs about 10-15 miles from where John was shooting the picture. That’s near the Albermarle / Nelson line where some of the weekend’s forest and brush fires continued to burn. Appreciate John sending that one out to us.

Monday was a bright and sunny day but certainly a cold one. The heater didn’t have much luck getting plugged in! In the valley high temps only touched the 40 degree mark for a short time around 4 PM before dropping off quickly. Most of the day was spent in the low and mid 30’s.

A system is approaching Nelson and Central Virginia over the next 24-48 hours that will spread, first, a wintry for part of Tuesday, then a widespread rain event through most of Wednesday. Some areas started seeing light snow and flurries last night. Temps begin to warm up slightly by Thursday & Friday. By the holiday weekend another chance for a wintry mix could be back in the forecast at night.

Sunday’s High / Low at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 40°/24°

Sunday was a rock and roll day across Nelson County and much of Central Virginia. High winds and very dry conditions caused a major outbreak of brush and forest fires across the area. In all over 70 fires had been reported in Central Virginia and at least a dozen of those were in Nelson alone. After dark the winds finally began easing up, but remained gusty well into the overnight hours. Our NCL-Tiger Fuel Weathernet Station in Lovingston reported a 50 MPH wind gust around 1:30 PM Sunday. Up on the mountain at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation Devil’s Knob, winds gusted frequently between 35-50 MPH.

Overnight lows bottomed out reaching the single digits in many locations. Monday will be a cold day only reaching the upper 30’s to near 40° in the valley and around 30° on the mountains. By mid week we moderate a bit with temps back in the upper 40’s to near 50° valley – and lower 40’s mountains. Rain is in the forecast Tuesday night, with a chance for rain/snow on the mountains.
