Despite the threat of thunderstorms looming in the area, the annual 4th of July parade in Lovingston went off without a hitch. Our Diana Garland was out capturing the sights of this year’s very successful parade. Here are some of what you saw if you went, or what you missed if you couldn’t make it. Looks like Diana had a great time!

4th of July At Wintergreen Resort
Wintergreen, Virginia

A pyrotechnics coordinator fires off one of the 1000 fireworks sent up over Wintergreen Friday night as part of the resort’s 4th of July Jubilee. Some of the fireworks blasted off to over 1500 feet in the sky.

The 4th of July weekend 2008 is now in the history books, and though thunderstorms moved in out for much of the holiday, not everyone saw rain all at once, so most events went off without a hitch. Sunday, Paul wound up his coverage of this year’s activities at Lake Monocan. They held sand castles contests, the 2nd Annual Wintergreen Family Triathlon, along with crafts and just spending a relaxing afternoon on the last day of the 4th of July holiday.

Thanks Paul for showing us all of the activities at Wintergreen! Here’s to much more summer fun ahead!

Events on the mountain kicked off Friday at Wintergreen Resort with thousands of folks making their way up to check everything out. Our Paul Purpura was on the mountain all day and night. He snapped away at some of what’s taking place, and Paul got some neat behind the scenes pics of the guys setting off the fireworks from the mountain. Looks like a great 4th up there Paul!

Most of you know by now that Yvette and I are expecting a child in the fall of this year. Yea, she’s been drinking the milk lots to keep up the calcium! She’s always liked Homestead Creamery milk. You know, it comes in those classic glass bottles, not far off of the kind the milkman used to deliver in simpler times. Most of the stores around here carried it, then one day she walked in and no more! Gone.

Folks this is one popular brand of milk and it’s the best around. No artificial hormones, and about as close to the cow as it comes! Yea, move over happy steer, we’ve got the happy cow now! As soon as Ken and Yvonne Harris up at a.m. Fog heard about this they jumped all over it! And, yep! They have the whole line of Homestead Creamery milk products in the familiar glass bottles, right there in their market on the Nelson-Albemarle County line on Route 151.

The 4th of July weekend is in full swing with lots going on. Before I head off into weather, let’s take a minute and be proud of our country, folks. We hear so much negativity lately about how bad America is and how the rest of the world doesn’t care much for us. Strange they still risk their lives everyday trying to get to the United States. I tend to have a much more optimistic view of our great land. Yea, gas prices are high, food prices are high, lots seems to be broken these days, but we have lots going right and so much we take for granted everyday. If you are a regular listener to this weather cast, you know I am old fashioned and patriotic. No apologies. I love America and I love living in America, especially these beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains!

Take stock in our 232nd birthday this weekend, and when you see one of those men or women in uniform, not just this weekend, but anytime, thank them for making it where we can play on the 4th of July, have a cookout, canoe on the river, or hike up into the beautiful mountains here. I never served in the military. My dad was in the air force for one four year tour, I remember him talking about being away from home in the Azores and being so glad when he got back home. Being back home in the U.S. is a great feeling and we should always, always remember that and be thankful for it. Yep, I am not ashamed to say I love America more than any other country in this world.

We’re, unfortunately, still on track for thunderstorm development later in the day Friday. We’ll start out with sunny skies in the morning, but with an approaching cold front in the area later in the day, storms are pretty much a sure bet by later afternoon and evening. Now, these things are tricky to predict and know that everyone won’t be seeing rain at the same time. Some portions of the county will stay totally dry, while others will be drenched. This cold front will stall over our area for the next several days keeping increased chances for storms around. Some of these could be strong to severe as mentioned in the daily hazardous weather discussion. Since the front is stalled over our area, that means the storms will be slow moving and heavy downpours are possible. But again, I have to emphasize, not everyone will get wet, so don’t cancel any plans on this forecast, just pack an umbrella and keep an eye to the sky to take shelter if storms develop.

You can always check here for the latest information and also click on the radar views to the left to see what’s coming.

Scattered storms stay in the forecast right on through next week until that stubborn front finally washes out.

Also, you can check out all of the events taking place this weekend, be sure to check them out in our datebook by clicking here or on the Nelson County Tourism site by clicking here.

Mmmmmm, so there’s mystery in Nellysford. A regular bovine CSI it is! Nelly the cow at the Nelson Farmers Market has lost her head! We noticed this the other day and have gotten several phone calls about it as well. Not to worry, the cow police are on it! See you at the market this weekend on Saturday morning.

Wednesday was considerably warmer than Tuesday. With sunny skies and southerly winds the temperature approached the 90 degree mark, but fell just short of it. On Thursday most locations will easily see the lower 90’s for afternoon highs. A slight chance for evening thunderstorms returns around dark Thursday with better chances over the holiday weekend.

A front will move across the area around the 4th of July and then become stationary over the region for the entire holiday weekend. With the front in the area, that gives us chances for thunderstorms at most anytime. We won’t have widespread rain at any given time, and many locations will remain dry, but the chances are definitely increased beginning Friday through Tuesday.

I’ll have a complete holiday weekend outlook in our Friday morning cast tomorrow.

Thanks to Mike Patterson of Arrington for sharing today’s weather photo. This is his balloon they were inflating in the eastern part of Nelson a few days ago. Mike’s one of the NCL-Weathernet stations as well, the one there just above at Mini-Tara Vineyard. He’s started a balloon company called Balloon Club of America-South. Looks like they had perfect weather for a takeoff that morning. See you up above Mike!

Also want to mention there will be lots of events taking place this holiday weekend. You can see many of them by visiting our datebook section by clicking here.

Tuesday was a pretty cool day for most folks. Many valley temps struggled to make it out of the 70’s and up on the mountains afternoon highs were only in the mid 60’s. Clouds hung in for much of the day and some very isolated showers moved through from time to time but most areas stayed dry and cool.

Today we’ll see much more sunshine and warmer temps right on into Thursday.

By The 4th of July we’ll begin to see an increase in scattered afternoon thunderstorms with temps varying from near 90° then lower 80’s through early next week. The showers and thunderstorms forecast for the coming holiday weekend won’t rain out events widespread, but anyone could see a pop up storm most anytime by the time we get to Friday afternoon.

Today’s weather photo is atop Wintergreen Fire Department’s newest ladder truck. We got the chance to look the new fire engine / aerial vehicle over. You can read, hear, and see much more by clicking here.

Monday was a much milder day with lower temperatures and humidity levels. The only station reporting any real rainfall was up at NCL-TWNF Devil’s Knob (Wintergreen Nature Foundation) with .22 inches of rain. Otherwise….there wasn’t much out there.

The bigger story, the temperatures. Last night much milder air filtered into Central Virginia and it was purely pleasant, enough so to raise the windows and allow the light breezes in.

The remainder of the week looks to be much the same with temps in the lower and mid 80’s. Widely scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast by the Independence Day Weekend, nothing that will wash out the holiday, but more the summer type of hit and miss garden variety thunderstorms.

After a year’s wait, on Monday, Wintergreen Fire Department took delivery of the newest and only ladder truck in Nelson County. “”This allows us to get a downward spray on the fire and fight it where it is,” says Wintergreen Fire Chief, Curtis Sheets.

On Monday NCL was there for the arrival and training with the new 750,000.00 truck, make that $750,007.10 according to Chief Sheets. We got the chance to ride the nearly 100 feet up in the bucket to grab the view from above. (More pics below)

Chief Sheets slowly raises the ladder to it’s 95 foot maximum above the fire station in Stoney Creek.

“We didn’t have any aerial trucks before this one. The last time we had to get Augusta County to come over it was 1 hour and 18 minutes getting here,” continues Chief Sheets.

Since Chief Sheets was already above, he took the opportunity to straighten the U.S. Flag out in front of the station on the way back down!

Members of the WFD who will man the new truck have already had 100 hours of training in addition to the next three days before they start using it.
