Homestead-Olivia
Olivia Harris of a.m. Fog Shows Off One of The Homestead Creamery Varieties
Afton, Virginia

Most of you know by now that Yvette and I are expecting a child in the fall of this year. Yea, she’s been drinking the milk lots to keep up the calcium! She’s always liked Homestead Creamery milk. You know, it comes in those classic glass bottles, not far off of the kind the milkman used to deliver in simpler times. Most of the stores around here carried it, then one day she walked in and no more! Gone.

Folks this is one popular brand of milk and it’s the best around. No artificial hormones, and about as close to the cow as it comes! Yea, move over happy steer, we’ve got the happy cow now! As soon as Ken and Yvonne Harris up at a.m. Fog heard about this they jumped all over it! And, yep! They have the whole line of Homestead Creamery milk products in the familiar glass bottles, right there in their market on the Nelson-Albemarle County line on Route 151.

HC-Bottle-1
Nothing’s quite as good as a cold glass of milk from one of those chilled bottles!

And now you can get Homestead Creamery milk just up the road at a.m. Fog. along with all of your vegetables, plants and nursery needs to boot!

You can always visit them on the web at www.amfog.net or call ’em at 540-456-7100

You just heard me talking about the big announcement up at a.m. Fog. Above, Olivia Harris, got the job of unveiling the Homestead Creamery milk line now available there. I can’t say it enough folks, it is good! Go by and get a bottle or two.

I also want to say congrats to Ann Strober of Nellysford for placing first in three of four categories in the recent Nelson Farm Bureau Photo Contest. You can click here to see and read more. Ann always sends us some really nice weather pics throughout the week.

And not to be outdone, our Diana Garland spent the weekend over the annual Nelson County Summer Festival at Oak Ridge. She grabbed some fantastic photos like the one at the top today. You can check out more by clicking here!

Promises of some needed widespread rainfall never really panned out this past weekend. Though lots of heavy, sometime severe, weather was within miles of us, a nice soaking rain never worked out. In Lovingston our, NCL-Tiger Fuel gauge picked up about a 1/3 of an inch of rain before midnight last night, but that was really the biggest amount around on Sunday. We did go under a severe thunderstorm watch for much of Sunday afternoon and evening, but no one in our immediate area got any significant severe weather.

We wind up the month of June today with not a lot to brag about in the rain bucket. Here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley, we’ve only racked up 1.01″ as of midnight last night and 15.37 inches for the year so far. Some of the southern reporting stations have had a little more than that for the yearly average, but overall June has been a fairly dry month unless you got one of those heavy isolated storms about a week ago which produced over 3 inches of rain.

Today we start a change in patterns and remain relatively dry until we reach week’s end on the 4th of July. Chances for random showers comes back in the forecast by then. But, we have a nice week ahead with milder temps and a little less humidity.

Many times you have seen pictures here on our web version of NCL by Ann Strober of Nellysford. Hardly a week goes by that she doesn’t send us a fantastic photo for our weathercast. Until the past year, Ann was strictly a film photographer, but after some chats at the post office, and other places along the way, Ann took the digital plunge! That’s when she bought a Nikon D-40, and the rest is history!

Well, over the weekend Ann e-mailed to let us know that she had entered the Nelson Farm Bureau Photo Contest earlier this year, and no surprise, she placed first in three of the four categories entered locally. WOW! Congrats Ann!

I was talking to Yvonne Harris over at a.m. Fog just the other day. You hear about about her and Ken every morning on our webcast. They’re just up the road on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line on Route 151. She was telling me they already have zucchini & squash. Yep Homer it’s true!

And for a limited time Big Seeded Watermelons are only $4.00. You know it’s summer when you start talking watermelons, picnics, and swimming!
-Lettuce buches $1.00.
-Petunias 50% off, until all gone.
-All other annuals 25% off, not including hanging baskets.
–Mention NCL’s weather report when you stop by, you’ll get 25% off any tree purchase until the end of June.

In their produce report Yvonne says, they are currently fresh picking sweet cherries, raspberries, and mushrooms; no spray – chemical free – just what nature and fish emulsion gives us. Which begs the question… What’s in your food??? You have to be careful about what you feed yourself and your kids these days, been paying attention to the news lately?

And just across the road at Blue Mountain Brewery they’re serving a cherry/chocolate/goat cheese crumble made with amFOG cherries. Now that is yummy!

When you meet folks like Ken and Yvonne you just can’t help but like ’em. They’re the real deal.

And they want to thank you for making this a spectacular spring! They’re looking forward to a stellar growing season and bumper crops from the fields. Things are changing all the time at amFOG…keep your ears open and stop in to see ’em.

Before we head off into weather, want to remind you about a big announcement coming next week from our sponsor, a.m. Fog….. We though we’d have the information to share with you this weekend, but looks like it will be next week, but this is something folks in the area are going to be very happy about! Listen in Monday to hear what the buzz is all about!

We wind up our music this weekend from the 2007-2008 NCHS Jazz Band CD. Thanks to those folks for getting a CD to us and letting us share it with you for this past week. Stick around to hear much more from them in just a few minutes.

And thanks to our Paul Purpura of Wintergreen for perfectly capturing the feel of the past several days as the temperatures have been heating up. It will be a great weekend to be around and in the water in between thunderstorms that form.

We ended the week hot! And we’ll stay hot until a round of thunderstorms gets our of the area early next week. Expect temperatures to be in the mid and upper 90’s across the entire area. The humidity will be on the upswing as well making it feel very muggy for the first part of the weekend. By Sunday we moderate a little with highs in the mid 80’s.

Thunderstorms will become more numerous as we head into the weekend with the best chances late Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Some storms this weekend may become severe, so keep an eye out if you are outdoors and keep a check here for the latest weather bulletins.

They have done it again and will be unveiling a very special get that folks all over the area have been asking for. We’ll be talking about it here, possibly as soon as Friday morning. Keep listening!

Our music continues this week from the 2007-2008 NCHS Jazz Band CD. Stick around to hear much more in just a few minutes.

Thanks to “trusty” Ann Strober of Nellysford, again, for today’s weather photo! This is a nice one of a motorized hang glider over Nellysford.

The weather has certainly been nice enough to take to the skies over the past few days. Though Wednesday was a few degrees warmer and with winds kicking from the south, the humidity has started go up too.

Look for that trend to continue today, with temps even a degree or two warmer with more abundant humidity as well. Combine all of that and you begin to have those afternoon thunderstorms back in the forecast. They’ll begin kicking off this afternoon and evening with chances continuing right on through the weekend into Monday. The best chances right now look to be Saturday afternoon into Sunday, with some of those strong to severe starting as early as Friday afternoon.

By Tuesday of next week we go back into the mid 80’s with mostly sunny skies.

Thanks to faithful reader and photographer, Judy Serkes, of Woods Mills for today’s beautiful weather shot. A perfect ending to a wonderful day in Nelson County!

Yesterday was warm, almost hot, but a nice northerly wind blowing in behind a passing cold front kept it comfortable and with less humidity, it felt very nice.

Today will be a shade warmer and we’ll slowly begin to feel the humidity work back in as winds become more southerly for the remainder of the week.

By Thursday night, thunderstorms return to the forecast right through the weekend, with the best chances for storms late Saturday into Sunday. Just like last weekend, not everyone will see rain, but those that do can expect some heavy downpours.

Temperatures remain hot through the period from the mid 80’s to the lower 90’s.

We continue to hear music today from 2007-2008 NCHS Jazz Band. Stick around to hear more in just a few minutes.

Thanks again to Ann Strober and to Henri and Elaine Weems for today’s weather photos above. We are getting in some fantastic shots of the recent storms across the area. Monday wasn’t the exception. By late afternoon a severe thunderstorm watch was issued with some warnings issued across the area as well. Again as has been the case for a few days, some people saw lots of rain, while others got nothing. Phil D’Ambola wrote in to tell us that his mother in law next to the restaurant got a 3.15″ downpour, while here at the office just 3 miles south we hardly got more than a trace in the weekend storms.

Today marks the end of the stormy weather for a few days, and though less humid with the passage of a cold front, it’s still going to be pretty hot with even hotter weather later in the week.

By Friday into the weekend, chances for thunderstorms returns again.
