Nellysford, Virginia

Today’s weather and is brought to you exclusively by:
am fog 4.16.08-A

I was talking to Yvonne Harris over at a.m. Fog just the other day. You hear about about her and Ken every morning on our webcast. They’re just up the road on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line on Route 151. She was telling me they already have zucchini & squash. Yep Homer it’s true!

And for a limited time Big Seeded Watermelons are only $4.00. You know it’s summer when you start talking watermelons, picnics, and swimming!
-Lettuce buches $1.00.
-Petunias 50% off, until all gone.
-All other annuals 25% off, not including hanging baskets.
–Mention NCL’s weather report when you stop by, you’ll get 25% off any tree purchase until the end of June.

In their produce report Yvonne says, they are currently fresh picking sweet cherries, raspberries, and mushrooms; no spray – chemical free – just what nature and fish emulsion gives us. Which begs the question… What’s in your food??? You have to be careful about what you feed yourself and your kids these days, been paying attention to the news lately?

And just across the road at Blue Mountain Brewery they’re serving a cherry/chocolate/goat cheese crumble made with amFOG cherries. Now that is yummy!

When you meet folks like Ken and Yvonne you just can’t help but like ’em. They’re the real deal.

And they want to thank you for making this a spectacular spring! They’re looking forward to a stellar growing season and bumper crops from the fields. Things are changing all the time at amFOG…keep your ears open and stop in to see ’em.

And don’t forget to Mention NCL’s weather report when you stop by, you’ll get that 25% off any tree purchase until the end of June.

You heard just a bit of the 2007-2008 NCHS Jazz Band at the top of our cast today. We just got our hands on their new CD and you’ll be hearing from them all week as we play a different cut each day. This group is fantastic! Stick around to hear more in just a few minutes.

The first weekend of summer was a pretty warm one. Though we didn’t have any very hot days, it did begin feeling more like summer. Both Saturday and Sunday, thunderstorms developed. A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for much of the day and early evening. Not everyone got the thunderstorms, but where they developed some torrential rains and hail fell across the area. In northern Nelson near Afton over toward Batesville and Charlottesville, some of the heaviest precipitation fell.

Ann Strober of Nellysford grabbed a shot of developing thunderstorms in the weather photo above. You could see plenty of those puffy summertime storms all through the weekend.

Today won’t be much different than Sunday. We’ll see some thunderstorms redevelop during the day with a few of them becoming severe with large hail and damaging winds in some locations. Once the cold front makes it through the area, high pressure regains control of our weather giving us nice week ahead, but temperatures warming back to the 90’s for part of the week.

The week ended and the first day of summer will kick off with more mild weather leaving behind that streak of 90 and 100 degree weather from a few days ago. Though we won’t see temps that warm in the coming days, we will begin to heat up slightly. Thursday was a bit warmer than earlier this week. By the end of next week we’ll be back in the real summer weather with temps returning to the 90’s.

Should be a nice Saturday to go over to the Nelson Farmers Market in Nellysford. Above, Foxie Morgan, displays some of the cherries from her place over at Pharsalia. There’s tons of new produce coming in all of the time now, so be sure to check it out this weekend!

We will see a return of humidity this weekend as the winds become more southerly bringing in more moisture. That gives us just enough fuel combined with daytime heating to fire those scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms across the area. These won’t ruin the weekend, but there will be some scattered around, becoming more numerous Sunday afternoon.

High pressure takes over next week and skies remain mostly sunny with temps near 90° by next Friday.

After a cool night, Wednesday was another very pleasant day. Perfect weather for the start of the portable skateboard park at Rockfish River Elementary. It’s on loan through The Nelson County Parks and Recreation Department from the Augusta Parks Dept. through this weekend. The folks over at SkateNelson.org have been working to get a permanent skatepark here.

The park will be there Thurs & Fri 4-8 pm & Sat 9-12 if you want to go on by!

The nice weather will continue today with a slight chance of scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Again, like yesterday, most everyone will stay dry.

Look for mild temps to continue with slightly better chances for rain by the weekend, but again very widely scattered in nature and most folks will remain dry.

Today’s weather photo is from the opening of Starry Nights this past weekend at Veritas Winery and Vineyard. In spite of the rain that fell just before the kick off the crowd adapted and the night went off smoothly. The light rain moved out and the evening ended with lots of dancing and music late into the night. Be sure to make next month’s event on July 12 when Abbey Road (The Beatles Cover Band) will be there. We went to that one last year and it was a blast!

Brrrrrr, did you feel the chill in the air overnight last night? After a mild day Tuesday with afternoon readings in the lower 80’s and even 60’s on the mountains, we dropped down in the 50’s and lower 40’s on the mountains for overnight lows. Some stations were almost at the upper 30’s!

Look for the mild weather to continue today right on into the weekend, but we do have a chance for some scattered showers or even a thunderstorm this afternoon. A developing area of very weak low pressure could help trigger a storm or two, but more or less not a big deal.

The rest of the week looks dry and mild until the weekend when summertime afternoon thundershowers reappear.

Congrats to all of the folks participating in the annual James River Batteau Festival. We caught up with them Monday afternoon as they started pulling into the landing at Wingina. That’s one of the boats arriving in the photo above. Last year we showed you their trip along the James from the air. They will pull out of Wingina today headed for Howardsville then eventually ending up at Maiden’s Landing on the 21st of June with several other stops along the way, such as Scottsville on Wednesday the 18th where a pretty big event day will be held.

You can find out more about the Batteau Festival and their schedule by clicking here.

While we were down on the James at Wingina Monday afternoon, some pretty good storms rolled through the area. Not everyone in the county saw rain or severe weather, but parts of Southeastern Nelson did. Just east of Schuyler on Glade Road trees were blown down on some power lines blocking the road and knocking the lights out for a few folks.

Though we were under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for most of Monday afternoon, not much really ever developed.

We can say “so long” to the hot weather for several days to come, it will be mild with some of the afternoon highs in the upper 70’s for the coming days. Today will be a bit breezy with NW winds behind the cold front. Scattered thundershowers are possible again by Saturday night and Sunday.

Merideth Young of Heards and owner of Black Rock Gallery at Wintergreen, (left) poses for a good-bye hug with friend Christina Kline who moved to Vermont this week.

Monday of this week marked the end of an era for Christina Kline of Wintergreen Mountain. You probably remember Christina from her column in the pages of NCL as Nelson Outdoors. Christina knew just about every creek and hiking place in Central Virginia. She was with us from nearly the start of the magazine. Until recently Christina was the manager of Blue Ridge Mountain Sports and she was on Wintergreen Ski Patrol this last season as well.

Christina wanted a change of pace and has made the move to Vermont! Sure is gonna be cold up there this winter!

Christina says she will probably be doing some ski patrol there, but also tells us she’s already trying to figure out a way to come back down a do a little at Wintergreen in the coming season.

She already misses it here in Central Virginia!

Good luck Christina, we’ll miss seeing you in the Nelson Outdoors!

Fog After The Rain At Rodes Farm

You can always visit them on the web at www.amfog.net or call ’em at 540-456-7100

Before I get started today, I just wanted to make mention about the news we posted and what you’ve been seeing all weekend about the death of Tim Russert. I never met Tim, but I did lots of work with NBC back in my television news days. Yvette and I both spent a considerable time in the news business before launching NCL. Folks there are lots of jerks and less than ethical people in TV news these days. If there were more like Tim Russert, it would be a much more admirable business. He was the standard, and will be greatly missed.

Thanks to Henri and Elaine Weems for today’s weather photo, they always send in some really nice ones and today is no exception. With some of the showers around fog has been developing overnight. They captured it perfectly!

The weekend pretty much cooperated weatherwise. We did see some showers Saturday that made some of the outdoor events go to a Plan B, but there wasn’t enough rain to call anything off completely, just make a few changes. Sunday afternoon some hit and miss air mass thunderstorms, those garden variety, made an appearance in parts of the county. For the most part amounts were less than a tenth of an inch.

Today will bring the chance for thunderstorms again in the afternoon. Some of these storms could be strong to severe once again as mentioned by the NWS in their hazardous weather outlook. This will be the last really hot day for the foreseeable future. The remainder of the week looks generally dry with afternoon highs in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s. With nighttime lows in the 50’s valley and even some upper 40’s on the mountains later in the week.
