EARL HAMNER : (John Boy) Happy 85th Birthday Today!

2

REFRESH Nelson County Life Magazine for the latest updates:

Earl signs book for fan
Above, in March of this 2007, Earl signs a photo for one of his younger fans that only knows his hit television series, The Waltons, through reruns. Earl was back in March 2007 for a brief visit and to see The Earl Hamner Theater built in his honor.

Today is an important day for Nelson County and its native son, Earl Hamner, Jr. Our friend Earl turns 85 years old. He was born back in 1923 in a small hospital room in what was then the Schuyler Hospital. Today it’s a beautifully renovated home that Isis Ringrose of Schuyler owns. She remains one of Earl’s best friends today though they met later in life.

Above, Earl delivers the commencement address to the 2008 graduating class at The University of Cincinnati in June 2008.

He was most recently back in the Eastern U.S. last month to receive an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Cincinnati, he attended the school way back in 1948. (You can download his entire commencement speech by clicking here.)

Earl in old hospital
Above in 2005, Earl looks toward the area in the old Schuyler Hospital where he was born on this very day back in 1923. Today it’s the home of Isis Ringrose.

Earl became an instant friend of ours after first meeting him in 2005. Since then we talk on occasion by telephone and e-mail. Today Earl lives in California near Los Angeles. We jokingly call him the California Country Boy. Everything you’ve ever heard about him being the nice gentleman, is true. We are so fortunate to have Earl contribute occasional stories to Nelson County Life.

Earl, Stafford & Person
Above, Earl poses with us along with Jim Person and his family. Jim Person wrote a huge selling biography, From Walton’s Mountain to Tomorrow, on Earl back in 2005. This was at a reception in Isis’ home in 2005.

Hamner in stage
At age 85 and over two decades since The Waltons ended, Earl is still as popular as ever. During his March 2007 visit to The Earl Hamner Theater inside the Rockfish Valley Community Center, it was sold out and packed.

Today has a special meaning for Yvette and me as well. We found out just after first meeting Earl that his birthday coincides precisely with our wedding anniversary! So Earl, though you may be way out there on the West Coast now and far from that Rockfish River where you played as a child, we will raise a glass in your honor from your home here in Nelson County, Virginia.

Happy 85th Earl from all of your friends, family, and fans back here Virginia!

Most of you know by now that Yvette and I are expecting a child in the fall of this year. Yea, she’s been drinking the milk lots to keep up the calcium! She’s always liked Homestead Creamery milk. You know, it comes in those classic glass bottles, not far off of the kind the milkman used to deliver in simpler times. Most of the stores around here carried it, then one day she walked in and no more! Gone.

Folks this is one popular brand of milk and it’s the best around. No artificial hormones, and about as close to the cow as it comes! Yea, move over happy steer, we’ve got the happy cow now! As soon as Ken and Yvonne Harris up at a.m. Fog heard about this they jumped all over it! And, yep! They have the whole line of Homestead Creamery milk products in the familiar glass bottles, right there in their market on the Nelson-Albemarle County line on Route 151.

We won’t have the audio this morning, but it may be back later this afternoon, certainly Friday.

A quick thanks to Heidi Crandall for this morning’s beautiful pic of a fawn in Roseland. Yep, we have plenty of deer here in Nelson, but there’s always something so nice about watching them out in the fields, especially the little ones! Thanks for the photo Heidi!

Wednesday was more or less a cloudy day with thunderstorms in the afternoon. As predicted, some of the storms became severe for a short time. The northern part of the county stayed pretty dry, while the southern sections near Roseland got almost an inch of rain.

Look for an isolated shower this morning then partly sunny skies move in for the rest of the day with seasonal temps. The remainder of the forecast looks generally dry with only isolated afternoon thunderstorms through early next week.

Heather Collins
Heather Collins in a photo submitted by the family.

Latest Update information via Ms. Ponton on 7-9-08 – 1:40 PM:

Yesterday Southern Health reversed their decison and are allowing her to go to Shepherd’s Brain Injury Center in GA. The flight will not be covered, but the family is working on trying to get a Christain Air Transport Company to transport her to Ga. since Heather is not ambulatory. Also, not covered is the ambulance ride from the hospital to the airport and from the airport to the clinic in Georgia. This is a very stressful time worrying about how to pay for all this. Any donations big or small would be a blessing

The Nelson County Southern Cruisers Riding Club. has opened a checking account for Heather Collins at Union Bank as Healther Collins Benefit Fund. Heather was in a single car accident on the Nelson County/Albemarle County Line in June. She had numerous injuries, one which is a severe brain injury. Our club had a meeting with one of her family members and was told that she has to be transported to a brain injury facility in Georgia . At this time, they do not believe that this will be covered under her health insurance.

The Southern Cruisers has vowed to raise money, with the community’s help to cover her uninsured expenses and any gas/logging needed to have family members with her. We are calling this mission “ROAM” Riders on A Mission.

This past Saturday, we did a 200 mile ride to raise money for her. This coming weekend, (July 12th) we will be at the Sparrow’s Cafe in Nellysford for their Car and Motorcycle Show. We will have a booth set up there to have a 50/50 drawing for Heather.

For more information or to help out, call Rhonda Ponton at 540-886-5790 or 434-531-5820 or (434-263-5680 after 6:30 pm.)

Updated information from July 8th, NCL received this via e-mail from Ms. Ponton:

“It seems that her health insurance is denying her hospital stay from 07/03/08 forward.)
Went over last night around 6:30 to see Heather stayed there with her until 9:15, she seemed to be in a lot of pain, holding her head, which when you ask her what hurts the most the touches her head, she was very agitated so I stayed were here until they gave pain medication which took them 45 minutes to get back to do

Far as I know Southern Health and Anthem denied the admission to Shepherd……. They may want to send her to retreat in Richmond, so if their bed is still available then I guess that is where she will go,

Plastic surgery is de-wiring her jaw on Thursday or Friday. She is nodding her head yes and no and she does a thumbs up but it very slow and weak but she tried.”

In today’s weather photo, Jeff Stone, of Wintergreen Winery in Beech Grove looks on (with crutches in hand, ask him!) as crews work on the expansion underway at their winery. The foundation is done and part of the walls are now up on what will be a new event facility at the winery. Jeff tells me they should be able to start having events there later this year. Keep watching for more updates!

Tuesday ended up being a tad warmer than the first part of the week. Late in the day another round of storms moved through the area prompting some severe thunderstorm warnings in a few parts of Nelson and adjoining counties. Today will be much like yesterday except we’ll see more thunderstorm activity today in advance of an approaching cold front. The Storm Prediction Center has us in the slight risk area for severe weather Wednesday, particularly in the afternoon. The local NWS office mentions that possibility as well.

Once Wednesday’s storms move out, our weather becomes more hum drum with warm to hot temps and only isolated chances for thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

Monday started out beautiful with mostly sunny skies. But, by mid morning those puffy cumulus clouds were already building west of the BRP like the ones in the photo above. That was the trend for much of the day with scattered thunderstorms developing for most of the afternoon. Several counties to the south and east went under severe thunderstorm warnings late in the day. Some locations in Nelson picked up a half inch or better of rain in the downpours.

Look for pretty much the same forecast today. We’ll start with some morning fog where the showers occurred last night, with partly sunny skies in the morning and scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. It remains humid with thunderstorm chances until Thursday when high pressure takes more control and we go to more isolated afternoon thunderstorms.

Tropical Storm Bertha 5 Day Forecast Track

Continue to watch what’s now Hurricane Bertha out in the Atlantic. She became a hurricane yesterday and continues a general northward track as a category 3 hurricane. At this point, it does not pose a threat to the United States and is a bit too soon to tell if it will affect Bermuda. We keep an eye out and keep you posted on the progress. But, rest assured the national media will make a big deal about this whether it affects us or not, it’s July, a slow news month, and a sweeps ratings month as well!

We’re back in the saddle this Monday after a fantastic 4th of July here in Nelson County. Though thunderstorms worked across the area for the entire holiday weekend. Not everyone got rain all at the same time, so most events went off without a hitch. Be sure to check out all of the coverage of the 4th of July events by clicking here and here and here, and here.

And a quick thank you to trusty Ann Strober of Nellysford. Ann perfectly captured one of the approaching thunderstorms yesterday as it worked across the Rockfish Valley. Look at the rain shaft on that one. That’s a very clear picture showing how intense the rain was. As always, thanks again Ann!

Some of our reporting NCL Weathernet stations picked up quite a bit of rain over the weekend as well. Most everyone got at least an inch of rain with others picking up more than 2 inches. NCL-Tiger Fuel in Lovingston had the most reported in just a 12 hour period on Saturday night with 2.10″ inches of rain. Much of that fell in just a couple of hours. Regardless, it was welcome to get the rain since last month a lot of folks saw an inch of rain or less for the entire month. There were a couple of exceptions, but not many. So what we got over the weekend was very nice.

Look for the scattered thunderstorms and rather sticky feeling weather to continue through at least Wednesday. An upper level disturbance will fire thunderstorms again Monday, more likely late in the day, then an approaching cold front keeps storm chances in the forecast until mid week when high pressure generally takes over and brings partly to mostly sunny skies with temps nearing 90° and only isolated garden variety afternoon thunderstorms.

Tropical Storm Bertha 5 Day Forecast Track

Do want to make mention of Tropical Storm Bertha hanging way out in the Atlantic. The present thinking is that Bertha will make a northwestward turn over the next 48 hours, though she may become a hurricane in that time as well. We’ll just have to see. Obviously if it makes the NNW turn it is not factor to us. However, a more westerly approach and we’d need to take more notice. We’re way early in the hurricane season right now and lots more left to go, but I’ll begin mentioning the ones out there off our coast if they have any prospects at all.
