Here is an update we were mailed from WU this morning:

From: @wunderground.com
Subject: [#ERU-904604]: Urgent! All Sites down
Date: July 16, 2008 9:31:56 AM EDT
To: tommy.stafford
Reply-To: @wunderground.com

Hello,

Weather Underground is currently experiencing a problem with name
resolution (DNS) to the site. Roughly half of site visitors are taken
to a “Site Under Construction” or an error page when they try
wunderground.com.

We are working feverishly to solve this problem.

In the meantime, you can visit www.weatherunderground.com which still
works.

Sincerely,
Weather Underground Staff
Thanks for supporting Weather Underground!

Weather Underground, Inc.
http://www.wunderground.com/

It does appear that some of their dns issues are starting to clear up. However, our NCL-Weathernet Station here that reports to them is still unable to get info sent to them. Some of our other outlying stations are able to report.

We’ll keep you updated, but expect much of our problems on this end to be resolved later tonight.

Over the past hour or so we have noticed that Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com) which interfaces with our NCL Weathernet stations to bring you conditions across the area, has gone down. It appears they have a major outage. This will limit our ability to get our information to you from our weather stations and from any maps that are provided from wunderground.com.

We have made an inquiry to their technical support department, but as of this post, we have no word on the problem.

Again, it appears they have had a major outage of some kind.

We’ll keep you posted!

Most of you know by now that Yvette and I are expecting a child in the fall of this year. Yea, she’s been drinking the milk lots to keep up the calcium! She’s always liked Homestead Creamery milk. You know, it comes in those classic glass bottles, not far off of the kind the milkman used to deliver in simpler times. Most of the stores around here carried it, then one day she walked in and no more! Gone.

Folks this is one popular brand of milk and it’s the best around. No artificial hormones, and about as close to the cow as it comes! Yea, move over happy steer, we’ve got the happy cow now! As soon as Ken and Yvonne Harris up at a.m. Fog heard about this they jumped all over it! And, yep! They have the whole line of Homestead Creamery milk products in the familiar glass bottles, right there in their market on the Nelson-Albemarle County line on Route 151.

Nothing’s quite as good as a cold glass of milk from one of those chilled bottles!

And now you can get Homestead Creamery milk just up the road at a.m. Fog. along with all of your vegetables, plants and nursery needs to boot!

We have a pretty boring, but beautiful forecast coming up over the next several days. Just after midnight Monday morning most stations picked up anywhere from 1/10th of an inch of rain to just under a 1/5th of an inch. Morning clouds yesterday gave way to partly sunny skies with milder afternoon highs and less humidity as the day went on.

Look for that trend to continue for most of this week. Chances for scattered thunderstorms return by Saturday.

A quick thanks to Heidi Crandall for today’s weather photo from Roseland where our NCL-Hatcreek Farm weather station is located. Heidi grabbed the shot above after the rain fell there Sunday afternoon. They got about .35 inches of rain there as of midnight last night. Thanks for the pics as always!

Also want to throw out a quick hello to Tad Stewart, AKA, Tony Stansbury, down near Savannah, Georgia. He and I actually worked in radio together back about 30 years ago in Tennessee. Guess you could call it radio, our microwave has more power than that little AM station did, but it was a fun! He was a pilot at the time, got me interested in flying and eventually I became a pilot as well. He and I made contact after many years and found out he occasionally listens to us on the web from there in Georgia. Tony joins other out of Nelson daily listeners as far away as New Zealand, Germany, Mexico, Canada, and France…just to mention a few! Thanks for listening Tad…I mean Tony! I’m curious since he lives in Georgia if he knows Paula Deen, ya’ll come! Sure do like her cooking!

We wind up some pretty hot weather from the weekend today as a cold front moves east of the area cooling temps slightly. After a beautiful Saturday with lots of sun and hot temps, Sunday became cloudy later in the day with scattered thunderstorms and showers moving in. More or less, the weekend was perfect for outdoor activities. We covered a few of them that you can take a look at by checking under recent posts to your left under the weather maps.

We may see a lingering shower early in the day Monday with some fog particularly in those areas where rain fell, but look for mostly sunny skies by afternoon with temps generally in the 80’s for the area in the valley.

The rest of the week looks seasonal and dry with afternoon highs in the upper 80’s and nighttime lows in the mid 60’s. No organized rain is in the forecast for the next several days, though this time of year you can never completely rule out those garden variety hit and miss thunderstorms.

Stuart and Betsy Smith of Roseland sent this our way Sunday evening, they said:

“Piney River Boy Scout Troop 32 just returned from a week of Boy Scout Camp at Camp Powhatan. The youngest scouts attended Brown Sea Island where they learned the basics of scouting. The remaining 9 older scouts worked on merit badges at the Powhatan camp and Claytor Lake and participated in activities such as sailing, shot gun sports, first aid, space exploration, and emergency management preparedness. The boys were a part of over 1,000 scouts from across the nation attending camp on this 16,000 acre scout reservation in southwestern VA. Scouting activities weren’t just for the boys, adult leaders Dan Hunt and Stuart Smith participated in several classes in addition to keeping a watchful eye out for the boys all week.”

Congrats to troop 32!

The money raised will help out with non-covered medical expenses.

Beautiful weather made for perfect car and motorcycle show in front of Sparrow’s Cafe in The Village At Glen Mary just south of Nellysford. Lots of neat car and bikes were there as well as John (HoJo) Howard singing a few tunes for the crowd. It was the first of numerous events that will become regular happenings as the area is completed with the addition of Nelson’s second micro brewery, Devil’s Backbone Brewery, this fall.

DATEBOOK : NELLYSFORD : RODES FARM : Rodes Farm Stables : July 19th Meeting @ 9AM : UPDATED 7.14.08

RF-2-TS

Updated for meeting place location 7.14.08
NEXT MEETING : Saturday, July 19th at 9:00 AM – under the pavilion at Rodes Farm Pool.

Task Force Formed to Develop Proposal to Save Rodes Farm Stables

As the result of a meeting on Friday, July 11th at the Lake Monocan Clubhouse, a task force of concerned residents has been formed to develop firm proposals to save Rhodes Farm Stables from closure.

Representatives of WPI and Wintergreen Resort met with concerned members of WPI and WPOA and our non-Wintergreen neighbors to discuss the future of Rodes Farm Stables. The resort representatives explained that, because WPI is faced with serious financial shortfalls, efforts are under way to cut costs across a broad range of resort activities. Among these is the proposed closure, after Labor Day, of the Rodes Farm Stables which, for the fiscal year just ended, reported an operating deficit of roughly $45,000, (as high as $60,000 if depreciation is accounted). There have been several expressions of interest regards purchasing or leasing the facility and the equestrian operations, but nothing that Wintergreen resort officials consider a firm offer.

The issue is further complicated because land ownership falls across both WPI and WPOA boundaries.

Lots of positive comments as well as concerns were forthcoming from the participants at Friday’s meeting, virtually all of whom were in favor of retaining the operation, despite the negative financial impact. The point was made that the Stables, regardless of profitability, are one of the many key factors that makes Wintergreen so unique and that, without the Stables, the value of each property and the quality of life in our community would be diminished.

The point was also made that reduction of the deficit is not unattainable and the resort representatives were asked to recommend to the Board that final decisions on the fate of the Stables be tabled long enough to give interested parties sufficient time to gather more information and come up with concrete, alternative proposals.

An ad hoc committee, tentatively known as “Friends of Rodes Farm” was immediately formed to investigate and recommend ways in which the equestrian operations can be continued. The Friends committee will meet next Saturday, July 19th at 9:00 AM – location to be announced. Those who have interest and who would like to volunteer and take a hand in the future of Rodes Farm Stables are encouraged to attend. As a first step, the committee will set up a means of mail and e-mail communications; information will be forthcoming.

Congrats to Wintergreen Performing Arts for a perfect launch to their Summer season earlier this week. Our Paul Purpura captured all of the opening festivities. You can view many more of the pics by clicking here. They put on spectacular performances all year long, but the summer is the highlight of the season. Don’t miss the next performance, find out more by heading to their website here.

The last couple of the days of the week ended with lots of cloudiness on Thursday, some fog Friday morning, and then sunshine to round things out. On Thursday ragged clouds behind a cold front that pushed through hung in the area keeping temperatures down in the mid 80’s for pretty much everyone.

Friday will be mostly sunny as will Saturday and much of Sunday.

There’s lots of events taking place this weekend. One of them is a Car & Motorcycle Show over at Sparrow’s Cafe in The Village At Glen Mary. This event will have lots of neat cars and bikes, but a group will also be there raising money to help out Heather Collins, a wonderful young lady that was in a tragic car accident last month. We told you about her earlier in the week here. Please drop by and help them out if you can. She’s got a long road to recovery ahead.

Over at Cardinal Point Winery, Jan Smith (our favorite here at NCL!) will be playing in the afternoon. Then later in the night at Veritas as part of their Starry Nights, Abbey Road will be playing. There’s lots more happening as well. Simply click here to view our datebook , and click here to see more events at The Nelson County Tourism site.

Scattered afternoon thunderstorms move back in the forecast by Sunday afternoon and evening into Monday, as a weak cold front slips through the area. But, temperatures will remain warm for the period, cooling slightly early next week.
