Hot Day At The Nelson Farmers Market
Nellysford, Virgnia

Above, Deanne Flickinger hands over some yummy treats she and husband “Flick” were selling at this Saturday’s market. I got some iced green tea in a cup with a straw that’s totally biodegradable. It looks just like plastic, but it’s not! Just toss it in the compost pile when done!
In spite of the heat and humidity, this past Saturday’s Nelson Farmers Market was packed with folks picking up produce, meats and treats!

We couldn’t help but notice that Nelson’s favorite two “Love Children” Jenny Sioux Hopkins and Deborah Justice were back at the market Saturday. The mother and daughter above got a free Nelson County Love Child t-shirt after their local art purchase of 20 dollars or more. That’s a deal! Love It!

Nelly got her head back and 3 year old, Matthew Drumheller, of Lovingston noticed!

Deloris Goska hands over some Nelly May Bucks to Forrest Hobbs of Gladstone. What are Nelly May Bucks? Glad you asked, read about them in the upcoming August issue of Nelson County Life out later this month.
See you at next Saturday’s Market!

Hello,
I would really appreciate it if you could post this in your “Find Me – Lost
Pets” section.Cat Found in Afton area of Nelson County. A young, male cat showed up at our
house in Afton on the night of July 17th and has not left. It does not have a
collar but is very clean, appears to be well cared for, and is very
affectionate, so we think it is a lost pet. Please call (434) 882-3570 or

A group called, Friends of Rodes Farm, met early Saturday morning to discuss the ongoing situation we told you about in our datebook section here last week. The group is meeting in conjunction with members of Wintergreen Resort and WPI to explore opportunities to keep from closing the stables later this year due to a continued loss of money for several years in a row.

Phil Chabot, Esq. of Nellysford, talks to the group he is heading up to find ways to transfer the operation of the stables to another entity.
More details from Saturday’s meeting will be posted as soon as we have them.

NCHS Tournament For 2009 Trip To France
Winton Country Club
Clifford / Amherst, Virginia

Above, Sarah Ponton, NCHS Foreign Language Chair, explains some of the rules to golfers just before the tournament started Friday afternoon at Winton County Club and Golf Course.
As we have been telling you about, most recently on page 41 of the July ’08 issue, students in the foreign language group at Nelson County High School have been working hard to raise money for a trip to France in 2009. Friday was part of a big fundraiser to help the kids get there. A captain’s choice golf tournament was held in Clifford, just north of Amherst, at The Winton Country Club. “It cost about $4000.00 a kid,” says Sarah Ponton, the foreign language chair at the school.

Sindri Linen of Nelson County, holds up one of the many hole sponsorships that were placed on the course for Friday’s tournament.
In addition to Friday’s tournament, the students have been doing everything from selling t-shirts, to concessions, to peanuts to help raise money for some of the students that might have trouble coming up with the money to make the trip.

Nelson County Life sponsored one of the holes at the tournament. Above, a golfer takes a practice swing on hole #1 at Winton.
“It’s a great opportunity for these kids to get out of the country,” says Jenny McCarter who helped coordinate the tournament.

A shot of some Nelson County High students that took the trip to France earlier this year.

One of the pros at Winton gives golfers the go ahead to begin the tourney.
The students will continue raising money throughout the rest of 2008. If you would like to help them out, you can contact by calling: 434.831.2932

Olivia Harris of a.m. Fog Shows Off One of The Homestead Creamery Varieties
Afton, Virginia
Most of you know by now that Yvette and I are expecting a child in the fall of this year. Yea, she’s been drinking the milk lots to keep up the calcium! She’s always liked Homestead Creamery milk. You know, it comes in those classic glass bottles, not far off of the kind the milkman used to deliver in simpler times. Most of the stores around here carried it, then one day she walked in and no more! Gone.
Folks this is one popular brand of milk and it’s the best around. No artificial hormones, and about as close to the cow as it comes! Yea, move over happy steer, we’ve got the happy cow now! As soon as Ken and Yvonne Harris up at a.m. Fog heard about this they jumped all over it! And, yep! They have the whole line of Homestead Creamery milk products in the familiar glass bottles, right there in their market on the Nelson-Albemarle County line on Route 151.

Nothing’s quite as good as a cold glass of milk from one of those chilled bottles!
And now you can get Homestead Creamery milk just up the road at a.m. Fog. along with all of your vegetables, plants and nursery needs to boot!

A quick thanks to our trusty Ann Strober for this weekend’s most interesting weather pic! A face only a mother could love, it is! I am not sure, but I think Ann may have shot this in the small fish pond down at The Dogwood in Nellysford.
If it wasn’t there, it’s a close match! As always, thanks for the great pics you send our way Ann!
You might want to find some water to be in this weekend. It’s going to be hot and muggy for the next several days and unfortunately, the earlier forecast of rain has vanished for much of the extended period. There is still a chance a weak front will get in here next week, but chances are less than previously thought. Right now it looks like Sunday Monday or Tuesday are the better days for rain in the late afternoon. As always, any day with hot and muggy weather can spur an afternoon or even thunderstorm, but nothing organized at this point.

Today’s cut is James River from her CD 29 Dances.
Louisville, Kentucky native Jan Smith writes songs rooted in vibrant imagery and sincere, stark emotion. The artists whose music she grew up with — Merle Haggard, Nina Simone, and Townes Van Zant among many others – influence her work, as does the traditional bluegrass music of her new home in the mountains of central Virginia.

Ok. It looks like we have all of the computer gremlins out for now! Tuesday night and Wednesday was a pretty tough day for the folks over at Weather Underground.com As I mentioned Tuesday night they had a major glitch in the way their domain looked for their servers. Essentially half of the world couldn’t log on to them, including us. Which meant we couldn’t get our custom weather out to you! That’s been taken care of and all appears to be working normally now.
A quick thanks to Catherine Lively for today’s weather photo. Her husband grabbed this shot out the window of their home. I am not exactly sure where Catherine lives and she didn’t say in the e-mail, but for some reason I think it’s near Nellysford? (She e-mailed this morning to say it way Bryant Mountain) But, many folks have seen bears this year, and there continues to be numerous sightings down in the valley. Better be sure the honey is put up!
Before I head off into weather, one more thing. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD, back in West Tennessee. I know he listens every morning and today is his day. Think this is his 30th birthday! Which makes me, uh, not born!
And we told you yesterday about the progress on Nelson’s latest microbrewery slated to open this fall. We were there Wednesday morning when they were installing the brew tanks in Devil’s Backbone Brewery on the way up to Wintergreen in Beech Grove You can click on the hyperlink here to see the pics and read more!
Over in the weather department, the great weather continues as it has for the entire week. Today will be hotter than recent days and not really any chances of rain until we reach the weekend. A couple of cold fronts will take aim at Central Virginia starting this weekend, which will keep scattered showers and storms in the forecast right on through next week. Not widespread rain events, but better chances for rain than we’ve had in several days.

Invest #94 possible computer projections for the next several days.
Before we get to the detailed forecast, want to quickly hit #94 that’s way out near the Windward Islands. This has the potential to gain strength over the coming days and as you see above, the general trend is for northward movement possibly into the gulf. The latest tropical weather discussion mentions air force hunters taking a peek at it and keeping an eye out for additional strengthening. We’ll just have to see what it does and if it becomes a factor at all.

Brewing Tanks Go In At Devil’s Backbone
Wintergreen / Beech Grove, Virginia
It’s official, the brewing tanks started going in Wednesday morning at Devil’s Backbone Brewery in Beech Grove at the intersection of Route 664 & 151 in The Village At Glen Mary. We first told you about the tanks making the trip to the U.S. from Japan here last year. They had been in storage for several months until the building was ready for them to be installed. Devil’s Backbone will be Nelson’s 2nd microbrewery to start operation joining, already opened, Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton.

Above, Brewmaster Jason Oliver of Devil’s Backbone, takes a look down into one of the tanks set in place Wednesday morning.
“This is an exciting time for us and for Nelson County,” says founder Steve Crandall of Devil’s Backbone. “After all of the wait it’s nice to see the tanks being put in place and tremendous progress being made on the construction of the brewery,” he continues

Left, Jason Oliver holds the steps up to the brewing platform in place while Steve Crandall uses a wrench to level the assembly.
Steve says the newest brewery should be finished and opened in the late fall of this hopefully by November if everything is on track. The brewery is just one of many construction projects taking place in Beech Grove. Last week we told you about, Jeff Stone, at Wintergreen Winery where a major event facility expansion is underway diagonally across the road.

Above, Steve talks about leveling the platform with Jason.
Look for more on the brewery’s construction and dates for opening in the upcoming August 2008 issue of Nelson County Life out later this month.

A quick thanks to Ann Strober of Nellysford for the great shot of the fog in the Rockfish Valley this week. We’ve had several mornings of fog as the nighttime air becomes damp and allows it to form in the valley.
As we have talked about before, lots of our weather data goes through a a weather server called www.wunderground.com up in Michigan. It links all of the data our NCL-Weathernet stations gather and then puts it on the internet where it can be seen. Yesterday their servers took a major hit, it appears to be a hacker attack at this point, and as of late last night they still weren’t back up. So … we can’t get to most of our data and many of the maps we use here on the site. Some maps and temperature readings will be missing until this is resolved.
Thankfully we won’t be needing it for a few more days, the forecast is basically sunny and warm, hot even, with chances for rain by the weekend.
Until all of this is sorted out, here is the generic NWS forecast. Hopefully we will have all of this working by Thursday.
