Today’s weather and is brought to you exclusively by:
am fog 4.16.08-A

I was chatting with Ken Harris of a.m. Fog on the phone recently and he told me about one of the neatest things that’s just happened over at their place on the Albermarle / Nelson line along Route 151. Yea, we all know them for their great nursery and greenhouse products, but now they are also carrying one of Nelson’s favorite and award winning wines from Delfosse Vineyard & Winery at Faber, Virginia over near Hickory Creek.
delfosse pic

And later this month they begin “Thirsty Third Thursdays” wine tasting, at a.m. Fog, that starts Thursday July 31st 4-8 PM. The event continues on into the fall.

HC-Bottle-1
And yea, we told you first about Homestead Creamery milk a few weeks ago. That’s available in the farm market at a.m. Fog. This is the real thing in those familiar glass bottles. It gets delivered fresh every Wednesday!

And to celebrate a.m. Fog’s 5 years in business, all trees & shrubs are 50% off. Folks this won’t happen again until their 10 year anniversary, so get ’em while you can.

Yvonne says, new shipments of corn arrive every Tuesday and Friday plus they’re picking loads of green beans, cukes, zukes, & squash. Tomatoes & peppers are just starting to come in along with ORGANICALLY grown and conventional peaches too. Cantaloupes are on sale this week 1.79 each or 2 for 5.00…now that’s a deal!

Thanks to Ann Strober for the great shot above of the bee pollinating the flower. Ann always grabs some really great shots, and if you check out the August issue of NCL being delivered on shelves now, you can see some more of her crafty work….including a really sneaky snake! As always we appreciate you sending in the photos Ann!

Yesterday felt a little better than the day before. It was still hot with the valley temps around 90°, but we had less humidity so it wasn’t quite as sticky. On the mountain up at Wintergreen it was a nice 76° for an afternoon high. Overnight some very light showers moved through the area, but most people stayed dry.

Today we’ll begin seeing a return of humidity on southern winds with temps in the 90’s for valley afternoon highs, and near 80° on the mountains. By Wednesday afternoon thunderstorms are back in the forecast, temperatures stay hot in the low and mid 90’s.

Before we head off into weather, congrats to everyone that participated in this year’s U.K. International Soccer Camp at the Rockfish Ruritan Park. They wound up the week long camp this past Friday evening, and we understand it was such a success they’ve already committed to another one in 2009. And congrats to Janice Wheaton of Roseland. Janice has been the coordinator for getting the camp established here several years ago. She’s done an excellent job on the week long camp!

One other thing before I get into the forecast and this is sort of related, at least in retrospect. When you do television weather as I did for a number of years, it becomes a close knit group. I spent over ten years in the Memphis market doing both reporting and television weather. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of fine forecasters and meteorologists along the way. Last Friday, the television weather world lost a fantastic fellow and a former colleague of mine, Brian Tiegland. Brian suddenly died at only 53, but that guy knew how to live life to the fullest. I first met Brian years before I was ever in front of the camera as a grunt working freelance at the CBS affiliate in Memphis. Brian was as nice back then as he was over a decade later when he and I worked last together on camera at the ABC affiliate there. We covered lots of severe storms…. he was a class act! Just wanted to recognize a great fellow and let his family and co-workers back there know that we’re gonna miss Brian too! Happy trails fellow…

Promises of rain and thunderstorms for the weekend never panned out, though we briefly went under a severe thunderstorm watch part of Sunday afternoon. However, the storms never fired up near Nelson, rather to the east and northeast. That was out best chance for rain short term, though by mid-week, we’ll see chances for widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms as a cold front retreats back north across our area as a warm front.

Sunday was down right hot with temps ranging from the lower 80’s on the mountains to the upper 90’s in the valley. We’ll briefly lose some of the humidity and heat Monday, only to have it return again by Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.

Tropics’ wise, there is still that one low pressure area way out in the Atlantic that we’re watching, but right now, it’s not doing much at all.

And by-the-way look for a neat photo or two she shot that will appear in our August issue of NCL magazine, that will start hitting the shelves in just a few days!

We have ended the week with some really, really good weather, with even a hint of Fall at night! Lot’s of folks saw very cool temps Thursday into Friday morning. By the weekend those chances for afternoon and evening thunderstorms come back in the forecast. But temperatures stay fairly nice with readings in the mid to upper 80’s maybe near 90° but no upper 90’s on the horizon.

A final footnote, Dolly is now a tropical depression and continues to weaken as it moves over land.

You know, it comes in those classic glass bottles, not far off of the kind the milkman used to deliver in simpler times. Most of the stores around here carried it, then one day she walked in and no more! Gone.

Thanks to our Paul Purpura for today’s weather shot at the top of the post. Paul was over in Augusta county yesterday in Waynesboro when the storms were approaching and he shot this one at the intersection of Lew Dewitt and Rt 340. Those are some pretty ominous looking clouds Paul!

One quick thing before I get to the forecast. Yesterday Keith Dix, co-owner of Basic Necessities in Nellysford was talking to me about rainfall percentages. At first he though I had predicted a 90% chance of storms on Wednesday. If you read my weathercast on a regular basis you know I almost never use percentages when forecasting. That’s what I was explaining to Keith, it’s so unreliable and I see the guys at the NWS get it wrong so many times, like yesterday, I just don’t like to use them. Again, they rely too heavily on the computer models to tell them what’s going to happen and don’t look at what trends are for the particular area. Now I will say in their defense, that the guys at the NWS in Sterling / D.C. area have tons of counties to forecast for, so I understand why they use the most expedient route to get a forecast out. I tend to use a narrative description to forecast the probability vs percentages. But Keith had valid reason to question a 90% prediction of storms yesterday, it never happened, not even close.

Most of the day Wednesday was more or less sunny. We did see some lights showers early in the day, with rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Most locations never got more than a fifth of an inch, though a severe thunderstorm watch was issued in the afternoon hours, but was canceled early because nothing really ever developed in our area.

We may have a stray shower early in the day Thursday then look for mostly sunny skies, milder temperatures, and a northerly wind keeping things very nice! Friday looks mostly sunny as well with partly sunny conditions over the weekend with chances for scattered thunderstorms once again.

#97 continues to peak general interest for folks along the eastern seaboard. We’ll see what he does over the next several days, if anything.

Invest #97

A quick thanks to weather watcher, John Taylor, up on Wintergreen Mountain for today’s weather photos at the top of the post. John grabbed these recently as The Summer Musical Festival continues on the mountain. He’s got a nice shot of the Evans Center tent at sunset and a neat shot of the moon rising just below. That’s where Wintergreen Performing Arts holds their performances as part of the festival.

By the way, we know it’s not officially called Wintergreen Mountain, but for clarity’s sake we use that term lots to differentiate between actual Wintergeeen here in the valley and the resort area on the mountain.

The promise of thunderstorms in the afternoon yesterday never panned out. As a matter of fact they developed to the east and south as high pressure was still strong enough to keep them away for the entire day. With few clouds, it got very hot again. And here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine we technically touched the century mark at 4:15 PM. I say technically because we hit 99.5 and you would round up. At those temps who cares about .5!

Last night was a different story as thunderstorms rumbled in from the south in some areas with brilliant lightning and heavy downpours. Look for those storms to linger into the early morning hours then we’ll have a break in the activity before it redevelops again in the afternoon. As mentioned yesterday, some of these storms have the potential to become strong to severe. There’s even a mention of isolated tornadoes with some of the stronger storms.

Thurs will see a lull in the activity with partly sunny skies and then scattered afternoon storms forming again. Friday looks partly sunny with thunderstorms again back in the forecast for the next several days in the extended period. Temperatures will moderate a bit starting today with temps in the 80’s vs those upper 90’s we have been seeing.

A low pressure area now way out in the Atlantic has formed and we’re watching. #97 continues to peak interest for folks in the gulf and all along the eastern seaboard. We’ll see what he does over the next several days, if anything.

Invest #97

In the gulf, Dolly is now a hurricane as of yesterday, and continues movement toward the eastern shore of Texas near Brownsville. You can see more of what’s happening with her in the images below.

MSSS-TS-1
The Martins Store Substation at The Intersection of Route 151 & 6

Updated: 8.1.08 4:40 PM Eastern
NCL received an update today from Greg Kelly, Member Services & Business Development Director with CVEC’s Nelson headquarters regarding the progress of BPL “deployment” in Nelson County out of the Martins Store Substation. Over the past several days, NCL has noticed several crews with IBEC and others trenching what appears to be cables to the site which look to connect the system to the telephone network backbone for internet.

Greg tells us:

“You are correct in that the trenching is for the connections from the Internet to the central BPL equipment and the connections to the three electric circuits that take off from the Martins Store substation. These circuits distribute electric energy north along Route 151, South along Route 151 and southeast along Route 6 to Woods Mill and beyond…..

Once the preliminary work at the substation is complete, installation crews will follow the electric circuits out from the substation, installing BPL equipment as they go. This equipment will be hung about every 2/3 mile along the distribution lines and next to each customer’s electric transformer (either pole top or pad mount). BPL will become available to different customers on different days and will depend on two factors, the distance from the substation and to the customer’s home and how many customers have enrolled for BPL along the way from the substation. An IBEC service representative will contact each BPL customer when service has been made available at their home to guide them through the BPL modem activation process.

There has been robust enrollment over the past four weeks. IBEC has updated their deployment maps and is focused on getting underway. Once the field deployment has begun, it will be easy to track the progress of the installation crews as the proceed along the circuits.”

Greg’s been excellent about keeping us updated and with making sure we proved as accurate information as possible. We are expecting an update next week from IBEC themselves to let us know how they are progressing, so we can let everyone else know.

Previous Post:
July the 28th is a date many folks living in more rural sections of Nelson County have been anxiously waiting for. International Broadband Electric Communications, Inc., (IBEC) in conjunction with Central Virginia Electric Cooperative, (CVEC) will begin the deployment of their broadband over power line , (BPL) internet starting next Monday. That’s the day deployment begins, but it will could take several weeks (depending on installation requests and progress) for everyone to have service according to a customer representative at IBEC. A beta test site has already been under operation in the Colleen area for the past couple of years with service to some customers.

We signed up here at Nelson County Life Magazine last week and have high hopes that BPL is what it has been advertised. Many small businesses like ours, telecommuters, etc. outside of areas like Wintergreen, Lovingston, and Stoney Creek have few broadband options and none of them are very reliable nor inexpensive. Those areas are currently served with high speed options like cable modems or DSL service, not available very far from those locations. In remote areas about the only option is dial up, a slow choice, or satellite internet, an expensive choice in comparison to others, and many times not reliable or at speeds the companies advertise.

“The importance of the Internet for rural education, employment and health care cannot be overstated and is underscored by the fact that the Internet has only be in use by the average person for less than 15 years,” says Greg Kelly, Member Services & Business Development Director with CVEC’s Nelson headquarters.

As we have been telling you over the past year, and here too, an aggressive building of cell and internet services is underway by several different carriers. Within the past several weeks, approval has been granted to both Verizon Wireless and Ntelos Wireless for several of their low profile monopole designs that will provide cellular and data services to many under served areas of Nelson. AT & T Wireless already located a site just behind The Wintergreen Fire Department in December of last year.

MSS-2-TS
A wider view of the Martins Store Substation where the next phase of BPL will begin next week.

According to information posted on the IBEC website as you signup:

“The process begins at Martins Store Substation where installation crews connect the internet to the BPL system at the head-end of three electric circuits. One circuit travels along Route 151 south. Another circuit travels along Route 151 north. The third circuit follows Route 6 to Route 29 at Woods Mill, then splits to follow Route 29 north and south. One of these circuits deliveries energy to your home or business.

Installation crews will follow each circuit, attaching BPL equipment about every 1/2 mile along the circuits and at the premises of the customers who have pre enrolled for BPL service. The BPL equipment controls the radio frequency signal that carries the BPL data from the substation to your home or business. One crew should be able to cover about 5 miles per day and the crew will work each line section until deployment is complete.”

We will continue to follow the progress here on our site and encourage folks to post their experiences with BPL here as installation progresses. This holds great promise for may of us who have had no other options until now.

We’ll keep you posted!

Most of you know by now that Yvette and I are expecting a child in the fall of this year. Yea, she’s been drinking the milk lots to keep up the calcium! She’s always liked Homestead Creamery milk. You know, it comes in those classic glass bottles, not far off of the kind the milkman used to deliver in simpler times. Most of the stores around here carried it, then one day she walked in and no more! Gone.

Folks this is one popular brand of milk and it’s the best around. No artificial hormones, and about as close to the cow as it comes! Yea, move over happy steer, we’ve got the happy cow now! As soon as Ken and Yvonne Harris up at a.m. Fog heard about this they jumped all over it! And, yep! They have the whole line of Homestead Creamery milk products in the familiar glass bottles, right there in their market on the Nelson-Albemarle County line on Route 151.

Nothing’s quite as good as a cold glass of milk from one of those chilled bottles!

Thanks to Paul Purpura for today’s photo from this past weekend’s WPA 5K run to raise money for Wintergreen Performing Arts. Paul tells me there were over 100 people participating in the event. Thankfully there were up at about 3000 feet, so it was a tad cooler, but still pretty humid! As always, thanks for the photo Paul!

Yesterday was one hot dog folks! We reached 99 degrees here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley just before 3PM and again just before 4PM. Most other stations reported either mid to upper 90’s for afternoon highs.

Today will still be another hot one, but promises of rain and thunderstorms thankfully moves into play in the afternoon with roughly half of the area getting a shot of rain in the late the day and overnight. Thunderstorm chances linger into Wednesday with some leftover storms in the morning, then taking a break only to redevelop in the afternoon. Not only do we get some welcome rain, but the temps will begin to moderate over the coming days after Tuesday’s hot and muggy one.

We’ll see a break in the activity on Thursday with nice temps in the lower 80’s then chances for scattered thunderstorms possible for the next several days after that, with temps in the 80’s for highs and lows in the 60’s. Some of the storms over the next 48 hours may reach severe limits, we’ll keep an eye out.

Tropical Storm Dolly will probably have some impact on portions of far SE Texas over the next few days as she comes ashore somewhere in the neighborhood of Brownsville.

Lots to get to today so let’s head off into it! First at the top of today’s weather you see the information about a really exciting event coming up in just a few days. The Reading Rocks Music Festival being held over at Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery on August 2nd benefiting Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle celebrating their 25th year of offering free tutoring to adults who are learning to read and write. Nelson County Life is one of the sponsors for this this year’s event. You can go on over to www.readingrocks.org to get all of the details or click on the image up above for a larger version of the electronic flier. We’ll see you there August 2nd!

Also want to remind everyone about the return of a really exciting event to Nelson County and the Rockfish Valley. The UK International Soccer Camp begins today through Friday July 25th. This a a very neat camp and really fun to see the kids learning soccer techniques from some of the best in the world! Be sure to go by and check it out!

What is now Tropical Storm Cristobal is still churning away off the eastern seaboard. It’s been hanging out there for the entire weekend but starts a NE movement away from the Carolinas today and more over open water. It is possible it will affect a tiny portion of the far NE U.S. but just barely as it skirts by. You can check out all of the latest maps, models, and satellite views down below.

Back at home it will be another very hot and humid day today with only isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorm across this area. By tomorrow a cold front that slides through will stall across Central Virginia keeping chances for mainly afternoon and evening thunderstorms in the forecast for much of the week from Tuesday on. None of these storms will be widespread, but some could be locally heavy with brief downpours in some locations.

Temperatures moderate a little after Tuesday as we’ll have more partly cloudy skies on the average.
