George McKinney shows off his Wright Brothers Award just presented by George Ream (in the background) of the Richmond Office of The Federal Aviation Administration, for his 58 consecutive years of flying without a break or major incident.

About 20 folks gathered recently to honor George McKinney of Nellysford as The FAA from Richmond presented him with The Wright Brothers Award. The award is given to pilots with at least 50 years of continuous flying without a break or a major incident. “I started in 1950 at New Haven, CT while I was a sophomore in college,” says George.

GM-WBA-13
Fellow pilot and friend, Joe Steele tells the crowd about George’s ability as a pilot and how deserving he his of the award.

I was proud along with other fellow pilots, Chuck Brown, Ed Dinwiddie, and Joe Steele to nominate George for the award. After starting his initial flight training, George eventually became a military pilot in the Air Force flying large bombers like the B-25 first and then B-47’s.

REFRESH Nelson County Life Magazine HERE

As we have been telling you here the work to bring BPL internet service to rural customers continues in the Afton & Faber areas out of the Martins Store Substation. That will eventually service many locations along Routes 151, 6 and U.S. 29 along with other roads off of those main connectors.

Today, NCL received the e-mail update regarding the status of the service:

From: amanda.langley@ibec.net
Subject: IBEC BPL Service Update
Date: August 4, 2008 3:13:32 PM EDT
To: info@nelsoncountylife.com

Dear Customer,

Thank you for signing up for IBEC’s BPL Internet Service. We have received your setup fees and are preparing to ship your BPL modem. You should be receiving your modem within the next two weeks. Because you have signed up for service during our deployment phase, you will be among the first customers in your area to have service. Signing up during this period also waives your installation fee because our crews will install equipment outside your home or business as we deploy the service on the powerlines in your area. We plan to have service up at your location within six weeks of receiving your modem, but will try our best to make this wait as short as possible.

In order to minimize delays, please call IBEC Customer Service to register your modem as soon as you receive it.

IBEC’s toll free number is 1-888-IBEC-BPL (1-888-423-2275) Option 1.

We look forward to serving you.

Thank you,
IBEC Customer Service

IBEC is supposed to be contacting us with more details, but as of this e-mail has not been in touch with us. We will let you know, when we know.

Anyone that gets the service or sees activity, please drop us a message here or post a comment on this thread (by clicking on the topic heading / title at the top which opens the comment section up below) so we can let others know.

am fog 4.16.08-A

I was chatting with Ken Harris of a.m. Fog on the phone recently and he told me about one of the neatest things that’s just happened over at their place on the Albermarle / Nelson line along Route 151. Yea, we all know them for their great nursery and greenhouse products, but now they are also carrying one of Nelson’s favorite and award winning wines from Delfosse Vineyard & Winery at Faber, Virginia over near Hickory Creek.

Last month they begin “Thirsty Third Thursdays” wine tasting, at a.m. Fog. The next one is scheduled for August 21st.

HC-Bottle-1
And yea, we told you first about Homestead Creamery milk a few weeks ago. That’s available in the farm market at a.m. Fog. This is the real thing in those familiar glass bottles. It gets delivered fresh every Wednesday!

And to celebrate a.m. Fog’s 5 years in business, all trees & shrubs are 50% off. Folks this won’t happen again until their 10 year anniversary, so get ’em while you can.

Yvonne says, new shipments of corn arrive every Tuesday and Friday plus they’re picking loads of green beans, cukes, zukes, & squash. Tomatoes & peppers are just starting to come in along with ORGANICALLY grown and conventional peaches too.

Rainfall totals as of 11:59 PM EDT Sunday night:

–SUNDAY’S High / Low at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in the Rockfish Valley : 89°/64° – RAIN : 0.00″ – YTD: 16.97″
–SUNDAY’S High / Low at NCL-TWNF on Devil’s Knob @ Wintergreen Mountain : 78°/58° – RAIN 0.00″ – YTD: 24.44″
–SUNDAY’S High / Low at NCL-Hatcreek Farm on Horseshoe Mountain @ Roseland, VA : 89°/59°– RAIN : 0.00″ – YTD: 24.67″
–SUNDAY’S High / Low at NCL-Tiger Fuel @ Lovingston, VA : 89°/65° – RAIN : 0.00″ – YTD: 21.31″
–SUNDAY’S High / Low at NCL-Delfosse Winery & Vineyard @ Faber, VA : 89°/65° – RAIN : 0.00″ – YTD: 16.93″

Before I get started, lots taking place this past weekend. You can see everything under recent posts that we gathered up! That’ll be going up throughtout the day. And … what a great shot I grabbed on the way down Berry Hill Road this past weekend. That’s the horses grazing in the pasture just below the Meander Inn B & B, and one of those huge thunderstorms off in the distance. Made for a very pretty photo!

The first part of the weekend was a hot one with upper 90’s for many folks and not a lot of widespread rain. But, on Saturday, isolated thunderstorms moved through the area bringing the southern and eastern part of the county a little rain. NCL-Hatcreek farm at Roseland picked up .08 inches on Saturday and to the east at NCL-Tiger Fuel in Lovingston, they got just under a 1/5th of an inch at .18″. Given the very low amounts of rain we had in July, this wasn’t much but, anything’s better than nothing.

Today will be sunny just like Sunday was, with increasing temperatures. We’ll easily make the lower 90’s today in the valley with temps around 80° on the mountains. It’s tomorrow and Wednesday when it will get really hot! Tuesday we’ll be near 100° in the valley and Wednesday still in the low & mid 90’s but with an increasing chance for thunderstorms possibly creeping into portions near and west of the BRP by Tuesday around noon and east in the afternoon and evening. Once that system moves through, temps moderate back into the mid and upper 80’s for daytime highs, cooling to the lower 80’s by the weekend.

Just a reminder, fast forward 60 days and we’re already into October and much cooler fall like weather, so hang on!

AFTON / FABER : Progress Continues on Internet BPL From CVEC & IBEC : Update

MSSS-TS-1
The Martins Store Substation at The Intersection of Route 151 & 6

Updated: 8.1.08 4:40 PM Eastern
NCL received an update today from Greg Kelly, Member Services & Business Development Director with CVEC’s Nelson headquarters regarding the progress of BPL “deployment” in Nelson County out of the Martins Store Substation. Over the past several days, NCL has noticed several crews with IBEC and others trenching what appears to be cables to the site which look to connect the system to the telephone network backbone for internet.

Greg tells us:

“You are correct in that the trenching is for the connections from the Internet to the central BPL equipment and the connections to the three electric circuits that take off from the Martins Store substation. These circuits distribute electric energy north along Route 151, South along Route 151 and southeast along Route 6 to Woods Mill and beyond…..

Once the preliminary work at the substation is complete, installation crews will follow the electric circuits out from the substation, installing BPL equipment as they go. This equipment will be hung about every 2/3 mile along the distribution lines and next to each customer’s electric transformer (either pole top or pad mount). BPL will become available to different customers on different days and will depend on two factors, the distance from the substation and to the customer’s home and how many customers have enrolled for BPL along the way from the substation. An IBEC service representative will contact each BPL customer when service has been made available at their home to guide them through the BPL modem activation process.

There has been robust enrollment over the past four weeks. IBEC has updated their deployment maps and is focused on getting underway. Once the field deployment has begun, it will be easy to track the progress of the installation crews as the proceed along the circuits.”

Greg’s been excellent about keeping us updated and with making sure we provide as accurate information as possible. We are expecting an update next week from IBEC themselves to let us know how they are progressing, so we can let everyone else know.

NCL

Original Post from 7.22.08:
July the 28th is a date many folks living in more rural sections of Nelson County have been anxiously waiting for. International Broadband Electric Communications, Inc., (IBEC) in conjunction with Central Virginia Electric Cooperative, (CVEC) will begin the deployment of their broadband over power line , (BPL) internet starting next Monday. That’s the day deployment begins, but it will could take several weeks (depending on installation requests and progress) for everyone to have service according to a customer representative at IBEC. A beta test site has already been under operation in the Colleen area for the past couple of years with service to some customers.

We signed up here at Nelson County Life Magazine last week and have high hopes that BPL is what it has been advertised. Many small businesses like ours, telecommuters, etc. outside of areas like Wintergreen, Lovingston, and Stoney Creek have few broadband options and none of them are very reliable nor inexpensive. Those areas are currently served with high speed options like cable modems or DSL service, not available very far from those locations. In remote areas about the only option is dial up, a slow choice, or satellite internet, an expensive choice in comparison to others, and many times not reliable or at speeds the companies advertise.

“The importance of the Internet for rural education, employment and health care cannot be overstated and is underscored by the fact that the Internet has only be in use by the average person for less than 15 years,” says Greg Kelly, Member Services & Business Development Director with CVEC’s Nelson headquarters.

As we have been telling you over the past year, and here too, an aggressive building of cell and internet services is underway by several different carriers. Within the past several weeks, approval has been granted to both Verizon Wireless and Ntelos Wireless for several of their low profile monopole designs that will provide cellular and data services to many under served areas of Nelson. AT & T Wireless already located a site just behind The Wintergreen Fire Department in December of last year.

MSS-2-TS
A wider view of the Martins Store Substation where the next phase of BPL will begin next week.

According to information posted on the IBEC website as you signup:

“The process begins at Martins Store Substation where installation crews connect the internet to the BPL system at the head-end of three electric circuits. One circuit travels along Route 151 south. Another circuit travels along Route 151 north. The third circuit follows Route 6 to Route 29 at Woods Mill, then splits to follow Route 29 north and south. One of these circuits deliveries energy to your home or business.

Installation crews will follow each circuit, attaching BPL equipment about every 1/2 mile along the circuits and at the premises of the customers who have pre enrolled for BPL service. The BPL equipment controls the radio frequency signal that carries the BPL data from the substation to your home or business. One crew should be able to cover about 5 miles per day and the crew will work each line section until deployment is complete.”

We will continue to follow the progress here on our site and encourage folks to post their experiences with BPL here as installation progresses. This holds great promise for may of us who have had no other options until now.

We’ll keep you posted!

DUE TO A MAINTENANCE ISSUE AT WEATHER UNDERGROUND.COM, DAILY CLIMATE DATA IS TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE. WE WILL POST ASAP.

A quick reminder for everyone about this Saturday’s “Reading Rocks” Music Festival over at Cardinal Point Vineyard & Winery. That’s a benefit for the Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville. Nelson County Life Magazine is a one of the many sponsors of the event that begins at 2PM and runs until 9 PM. Nelson’s own, Andy Waldeck is just one of the many bands and singers there. It will be a great afternoon, and since it goes on for the entire afternoon into the evening, you’ll have plenty of time to go by!

You can check out more by heading over to www.readingrocks.org

Thursday was a pretty disappointing day rain wise. though some stations did pickup a few hundredths of an inch, no one saw a really good soaking. We ended the month of July with a total of around 1.60″ of rain here at Nelson County Life Magazine, not much to write home about. And we ended the month of July with a high of 99.5° here in the Rockfish Valley, so it’ll go down as 100°. Some other stations did see a bit more rain, but all in all a fairly dry month.

We’ll start out the first few days of August with hot days continuing on into next week. By late next week temps drop a bit and humidity levels go down a tad behind another cold front. Over the weekend we have another shot at thunderstorms forming Friday night as an advancing disturbance drops through the area. Some of the storms Friday night could be strong to severe. Again, just like the past several days, this won’t be a big rain event, but a few areas might get the chance to see some wanted rain.

By Saturday we dry out and return to mostly sunny & hot conditions once again.

Thanks to Henri and Elaine Weems of Rodes Farm. They recently grabbed this shot of storm clouds forming over Pilot Mountain toward Crozet. You guys don’t have bad view from your place at all!!

Yesterday was a very hot one with only a few scattered thunderstorms across the area. The humidity began working back in within the past 24 hours which has made it very muggy feeling even at night. Afternoon highs climbed into the mid and upper 90’s in valley locations, with the mountains even nearing the mid 80’s.

That trend continues for the next several day with really hot temps as the norm.

No organized widespread rains are on the horizon, but some folks will get one more shot today and tonight, before chances diminish once again. Some of the storms today could be locally severe.

Though hot, the weather over the past several days has been perfect for outdoor activities. Our Paul Purpura grabbed a shot or two of these folks enjoying wine tasting as part of Wintergreen Performing Arts’ Summer Music Festival. This past weekend they were celebrating Italy and, of course, Italian wines! This coming weekend wraps up the Summer Music Festival celebrating the Americas, but they have lots more events planned throughout the rest of the summer right on into the Fall.

Yesterday would have been a great day to be sipping a cold wine under the shade tree. Humidity levels began creeping back up as high pressure scoots to our east allowing southerly breezes to move the moisture back in. An advancing cold front to our NW will work toward Central Virginia on Wednesday bringing chances for thunderstorms to the area once again. Some of the storms Wednesday afternoon could have locally heavy downpours and be fairly strong in a few areas. It will be hot with temps in the low & mid 90’s with a heat index of near 100° in a few valley locations.

Thunderstorms hang around through part of Thursday. The weekend looks dry right now, but temps remain around the lower 90’s through the period.
