The post below is our original coverage when the Derecho hit Nelson County and most of Virginia on June 29, 2012.

One we will never forget!

Here’s to a better 2017 and 4th of July!

Nelson County, VA

Below is an outstanding animated satellite image of the damaging derecho thunderstorm complex as it moved out of the midwest and straight for Virginia. It is truly illustrative as to how powerful and massive this storm was.

Nelson EMS Director Jaime Miller tells us her dispatch center was told by CVEC that crews would not come out until 5AM at the earliest. It appears as of this post at 1:20 AM Saturday that the online CVEC companion site showing outages has not been updated to reflect the total outage status. “Our biggest concern right now is making sure people use extreme caution around downed power lines. There are so many down across the county and we have seen people driving over them in some instances.” Miller told us early Saturday morning.

Original Post at 11:23 PM Friday evening June 29, 2012
We are in the dark here tonight at NCL filing this story from our iPhone. As best we can tell everyone in the county is without power and so many trees are down we can’t begin to give the number. Sarah Shelton the manager at Basic Necessities in Nellysford said she counted at least 10 trees or major sized limbs across 151 between their restaurant and Lodebar.

The storm system was not a tornado, though it produced damaging winds that are certainly similar in many respects. The meteorological term is derecho. From NOAA and the NWS:

A derecho (pronounced similar to “deh-REY-cho” in English, or pronounced phonetically as “”) is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to that of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath. As a result, the term “straight-line wind damage” sometimes is used to describe derecho damage. By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles (about 400 kilometers) and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h) or greater along most of its length, then the event may be classified as a derecho.

You can read more about derechos here.

Here at NCL in Greenfield we have numerous treetops down on the front of the office.

Photo Courtesy of Heidi Crandall : Steve Crandall of Roseland, VA helps to clear a large tree from Route 151 Friday night.

Elsewhere in the county just east of Lovingston people were trapped in a home where a tree fell on their house.

Nelson EMS Director Jaime Miller tells us that emergency shelters were opened in both Roseland at the rescue squad and in Lovingston at the firehouse to give people a place to stay that couldn’t make it home.

Greg Kelly with Central Virginia Electric tells us hey are making an assessment now. He tells us it will be a large task making that assessment since so many trees are reported down.

We will update here as often as possible. We are efforting our backup power now and will be back up with all computers soon.

Wednesday will be the last of the really mild days for the foreseeable future.

Enjoy it while you can!

Traffic Alert : Nelson – Semi Accident On Brents – Now Open 6:35 PM

©2017 Blue Ridge Life Magazine : Photos By Tommy Stafford : This semi has part of Brents Mountain blocked on the north side (Devils Backbone side) heading down the mountain, just below Brents Gap. The truck attempted to make the curve just beyond the gap and slammed into the side of the mountain.

Nelson County, Virginia

Update 6:35 PM
Nelson Sheriff David Hill: “ROADWAY IS NOW OPEN!”

Update 4:50 PM
It’s estimated that it will take about another 2 hours at least to get roadway open at the accident scene at the top of Brent’s.

Update 3:30 PM
Wrecker crews are beginning work to clear the truck from the highway on Brent’s. Estimates of 2-3 hours to get roadway cleared are currently estimated. As of 3:35 PM the roadway has been closed and traffic is being diverted at Ski Barn on the north side around the accident.

Expect delays while an accident involving a semi truck is clear on Brent’s Mountain just north of the gap heading down the mountain. Initially after the accident around 2PM, one lane was open (southbound) and traffic was slowly getting around one car at a time, but expect major delays while the truck is being removed.

The rear of the truck crashed into the side of the mountain trying to make the tight curves heading down the mountain.

More update as we have them.

Nelson : Beech Grove : Bikes & Bubbles Helped Raise Money This Past Saturday

Nelson County, Virginia

If you passed by the intersection of Route 664 and 151 anytime Saturday afternoon you probably had to do a doubletake! Several gals were out in summer cut off short and tanks washing motorcycles! It was more than just fun. It was a fundraiser to help out one of the former members of The Ski Barn Family with medical expenses.

This isn’t the first time Nikki at the Ski Barn has pitched in to help someone in need. Last year about this time she made it a priority to help flooding victims in West Virginia. She started a drive and drive the supplies in to those most in need. Long before outside help had started arriving. Click above to read about that.

To see more photos from Saturday’s bike wash, click on our Facebook album above.

Nikki said she wanted to thank all of the bikers that came by and donated. She said it was a great day and a nice prelude to an even bigger event later this year. The annual Motorcycle Poker Run & Fundraiser on September 16, 2017. Look for more details in the coming weeks!

The start of summer always coincides with the annual Virginia Summer Solstice Wine Festival held at Lazy Days Winery in Amherst. We’ve been telling you about this neat event since the beginning back in 2009.

This past weekend’s event had perfect weather as the backdrop for another successful festival!

Our Jenn Rhubright was on hand at the festival (what a tough assignment!) to grab plenty of photos and enjoy some of the fun. Check out more photos in her Facebook album above. She’ll be adding more over the next day or so. Be sure to check back!

SINKHOLE REPAIRS EXPECTED TO CAUSE DELAYS ON I-81 SOUTHBOUND IN AUGUSTA COUNTY

STAUNTON – (9:40 a.m.) The right lane of southbound Interstate 81 in Augusta County is closed due to a sinkhole near mile marker 212.6. This location is between exit 213 at Route 11 in the Greenville area of Augusta County and exit 205 at Route 606 in the Raphine area of Rockbridge County.

Contractors began repairs this morning. Motorists can expect significant delays on southbound I-81 during repair operations, which are expected to continue throughout the day. Related congestion is also anticipated on Route 11 in this area

Interstate maintenance crews discovered the sinkhole next to the right shoulder of southbound I-81 Thursday afternoon. Overnight rains widened the hole to the area underneath the paved shoulder of the interstate.

Repairs involve hole excavation which determines the size of the hole and stability of the surrounding ground. The sinkhole will be back-filled and any needed repairs to the roadway will be made before the right lane reopens to traffic.

All work is weather permitting.

Traffic alerts and traveler information can be obtained by dialing 511. Traffic alerts and traveler information also are available at http://www.511Virginia.org.

Virginia Distillery Donates $5000 To Local Responders From Coffee Finished Release

Virginia Distillery Company’s CEO Gareth H. Moore Passes off a check to Wintergreen Fire & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets a few nights ago as part of specially distilled selection to benefit firefighters that help contain a wildfire last November 2016.

Lovingston
Nelson County, Virginia

Virginia Distillery Company recently donated approximately $5,000 to First Responder teams at an event at the distillery on June 15. The amount was split between several organizations, including Lovingston Volunteer Fire, Gladstone Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Roseland Rescue, Wintergreen Fire & Rescue, Piney River Volunteer Fire Department, Faber Volunteer Fire Department and the Department of Forestry.

The donation was the outcome of the distillery’s April release of the Nelson County First Responders Single Barrel (Coffee Finished), where the net proceeds of the sales of the whisky were set aside to benefit local First Responders. In addition, Virginia Distillery Company matched the net proceeds of the bottle sales.

Virginia Distillery Company made the decision to dedicate a whisky to local First Responder teams as a way to say thank you after the distillery got to witness the heroic efforts of local First Responders in November 2016 when there was a forest fire on the hillside behind the distillery.

“First Responders dedicate their lives to giving back to the community on an ongoing basis,” said Virginia Distillery Company’s CEO Gareth H. Moore. “We’re thankful we were able to find a way to give back to these groups and thank them for their efforts right here in Nelson County.”

The June 15 event was held to thank the hardworking local teams for the important work they do in community and to present them with checks. The Virginia Distillery Company team toasted the First Responder teams with the Nelson County First Responder Single Barrel whisky and the beneficiaries were able to take a tour of the distillery.

Virginia Distillery Company invited Nelson County First Responders to stop by anytime during the month of April for tastings of this special whisky.

Virginia Distillery Company worked with a local coffee company, Trager Brothers Coffee, on this whisky. The team at Trager Brothers Coffee used an ex-Bourbon cask from Virginia Distillery Company and did a cold brew coffee soak. After emptying the coffee from the cask, whisky was added and left to completed finishing for 18 months.

For more information, visit the distillery’s website at www.vadistillery.com.

About Virginia Distillery Company:
Virginia Distillery Company whiskies yield a complex taste, due to the influence of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains and maturation in ex-bourbon, Sherry and treated wine casks. The distillery is currently crafting its Virginia Single Malt at the distillery located in Lovingston, Virginia. The casks have been resting since November 2015 and will be bottled when the whisky says it’s ready. While the Virginia Single Malt ages, customers may enjoy Virginia Highland-Whisky.

Nelson Cycling Icon Martin Versluys Continues Remarkable Recovery!

0
Photo By Kathy Versluys : Martin Versluys seen in this 2012 cycling photo taken by his wife Kathy, continues his miraculous recovery after a severe cycling / traffic accident on Mother’s Day weekend 2017.

Faber
Nelson County, Virginia

The news just keeps getting better and better about Martin Versluys. We first told you about his terrible accident on Mother’s Day Weekend when a driver turned in front of him as he was pedaling north on Route 151. He was flown to UVA Medical Center.

Now just a few weeks after that accident we are happy to report Martin is up and around and is recovering well ahead of schedule.

Over this past weekend his wife Kathy shared some thoughts with family and friends that have been so helpful over the past several weeks.

“I can’t wrap my head around how fast time has zoomed by. Over a month has passed since that awful day—and it seems we’ve barely had time to blink. How do I begin to wrap up this enormous caring effort!

We are so indebted to everyone and so aware how “lucky” we are on countless fronts.

First and foremost, we need to give full praise to Wintergreen Rescue, and all the other First Responders, who literally saved Martin’s life on May 14. If it weren’t for their extraordinary speed and expertise, we would not be here now. THANK YOU, RESCUE WORKERS, from the bottom of our hearts!

We are immensely grateful to Heidi Crandall for her immediate and thorough coordination of a YouCaring site for Martin. We are touched and humbled, as well by the Squadra Coppi Cycling Team of Washington DC, who set up a GoFundMe site for Martin (Thanks, David!)—And to all the other fellow cyclists who reached out in so many ways to support us, Martin is forever your brother.

Then, for the support from our family members, and all our friends and neighbors—right down the road and all around the world—(even people we’re not sure we’ve met), we’re so so grateful. How to do justice to all that kindness!

A week ago, Tanya Anisimova’s powerful cello performance was an unforgettable evening (also raising funds), with so many friends and community members coming to hear her and to see Martin. (Many hands went into that!) The evening felt almost like fireworks to top off Martin’s efforts to heal.

But, I missed the chance to make that the “grand finale update,” and as we all know, life keeps going!

On Thursday, what Martin thought was a filling coming loose turned out to be his screws coming loose. (There’s a joke in there somewhere.) Our dash to the craniofacial surgery office turned out to be a get-outa-jail-early card for his jaws. While he was supposed to be wired shut another three weeks, replacing the post that had fallen out would have meant an operation with anesthesia, etc. Made more sense to cut him loose, said the surgeon—But he is still on a liquid diet until his mid-July appointment. So a big relief to not have to carry wire cutters at all times in case of emergency—but solid food is becoming more tempting than ever.

**********

Meanwhile, I can’t stop grappling with how to properly let each and every one of you know how beholden we are for all the concern and over-the-top generosity during our past frightful month. So many practical, creative, thoughtful, inspired, big and little ways you guys came up with to prop me up and lend us a hand—that my head starts to spin when I try to ponder how to return the favors.

I’m doing my diligent best to write down every person I know who has helped us. You all know who you are! I know many of you, but others remain anonymous. The more names I write down, the more names crowd into to my head—hundreds of you!—that it makes me downright certain I’ll miss thanking someone—And that makes me crazy!

We look forward to catching up with you somewhere soon!

Love and peace,
Kathy—and still-with-us-Martin!”

What great news! We look forward to seeing you out and about soon Martin!
