Wintergreen Performing Arts Kicks Off 2017 Summer Music Festival – Continues Into August

Photo Courtesy of John Taylor : Events surrounding the 2017 Wintergreen Performing Arts’ 2017 Summer Music Festival continued Sunday night (July 9, 2017) with this performance at the Rockfish Valley Community Center called Voices in the Valley. It featured tunes from Broadway to the Metropolitan Opera, sung by the talented singers in WPA’s Vocal Intensive program. The festival officially kicked off July 6th and continues until August 6th.

The Wintergreen Performing Arts’ 2017 Summer Music Festival is officially underway! It kicked of on July 6th and will continue until August 6th. This year’s theme is the Fountain of Youth.

“What began in 1997 as the American Sinfonietta Performance Academy has now grown into the six programs of the internationally recognized Wintergreen Summer Music Academy. We are celebrating this 20th anniversary with enhanced offerings, excellent faculty, and a renewed passion for excellence in performance and community service,” from WPA’s website.

This years festival includes many events on the mountain at the resort as well as many others at different venues.

The National Weather Service in Sterling Virginia has issued a

* Flood Watch for portions of central Virginia, northern
Virginia, and northwest Virginia, including the following
areas, in central Virginia, Albemarle, Greene, Nelson, and
Orange. In northern Virginia, Culpeper. In northwest Virginia,
Madison and Rappahannock.

* Until 8 PM EDT this evening

* Very heavy rainfall is occurring in the central Virginia
Piedmont.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

Amherst : VSP Investigating Fatal 4th Of July Crash : Updated 3:15 PM

Near Fletchers Level Road On Route 29
Amherst County, Virginia

3:15 PM update:

“Virginia State Police Trooper L.B. Dowell is investigating a single-vehicle crash in Amherst County. The crash occurred at 7:30 p.m., July 4, 2017, on Route 29, less than a mile south of Fletchers Level Road.

A 2007 Subaru Legacy was traveling south on Route 29 when it ran off the right side of the road in order to avoid striking a deer. The vehicle struck a tree.

The driver, Mery Diaz-Campos, 42, of Revere, Mass., died at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation.

“At 9:17 p.m., Tuesday (July 4), Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 29 near Fletchers Level Road in Amherst County. A vehicle ran off the road and down an embankment. There is one confirmed fatality. The crash remains under investigation at this time.

Update : Buckingham County Plane Crash On 4th Of July

This is an update to our original news alert from our story on July 4, 2017.

“Virginia State Police Trooper C.J. Thackston is investigating a plane crash in Buckingham County. State police were called to the scene at 12:24 p.m., Tuesday (July 4).

An Aviat A-1C-180 aircraft stalled out causing it to crash land in a cornfield in the 100 block of Mountain View Lane. The plane had taken off from a private landing strip on Alcoma Road in Buckingham County and was flying locally when the crash occurred.

The pilot, Justin G. Knight of Midlothian, Va., was flown to UVA Hospital and is being treated for life-threatening injuries. Knight’s 11-year-old son and only passenger suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The FAA and NTSB have both been notified. The crash remains under investigation at this time.

“Virginia State Police are investigating a plane crash in Buckingham County. State police were called to the scene at 12:24 p.m., Tuesday (July 4). The plane crashed within the 100 block of Mountain View Lane.

The pilot was flown to UVA Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. A passenger onboard suffered minor injuries.

The FAA and NTSB have both been notified. The crash remains under investigation at this time.

It’s become an annual tradition to recognize the 4th Of July holiday at Wintergreen Resort. The U.S. Flag is being flown below the bucket on one of the ladder trucks at Wintergreen Fire & Rescue Station 1 up top.

Nelson : Authorities Looking For Missing Man – LOCATED!

The missing man has been located safe and sound.

 

 

 

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing Nelson County man.

“The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a missing elderly adult. He is a white male identified as Lewis Andrew Mohler age 79. Mr. Molher was last seen wearing a red long sleeved plaid shirt and blue jeans. He was last seen driving his vehicle, a 1995 Nissan Pickup VA tag WX-8326, white in color in the area of Route 64 near exit 99. If located, please notify law enforcement.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 434.263.7050 or your nearest law enforcement office.

Walking The Line Wrapped Up Sunday – Atlantic Coast Pipeline Route

Photos By Kat Turner : A group known as Walking The Line gathered last week in Nelson County to walk along the path of the propesed Atlantic Coast Pipeline. Here the group was hiking the route that would go over Roberts Mountain.

Sunday marked the official end of Walking The Line, a group that’s been walking the route of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.

“Starting in Highland County, we will follow as close as possible to the proposed path for 140 miles (1st leg) – Through Bath, Augusta and Nelson Co, and into the heart of Virginia; Buckingham County – the site of the proposed toxin-emitting Compression Station,” their Facebook page states.

One of many great trees that is in the 125 foot path they would be clear cut along the ACP in Nelson County.
