Over the weekend we told you about a serious crash between a tanker truck and another car on Route 29 North at the intersection of Rockfish River Road. (Original stories here & here)

Since those original stories, the Virginia State Police tells us that one person has died from the accident.

“At 10:20 a.m., Saturday (June 17), Virginia State Police Senior Trooper T.M. Skehan responded to a two-vehicle crash in Nelson County. The crash occurred on Route 29 at the intersection of Route 617.

A 2017 Chrysler Pacifica was traveling east on Route 617. The minivan stopped for the posted stop sign and then proceeded across Route 29. Piney River
Nelson County, Virginia

For over a year we have been telling you about Dollar General’s plan to located a new store in Nellysford. That store is now under construction and is estimated to be open by the fall of this year.

We’ve also been telling you about plans that are being explored to locate another store north of there on Route 151 in Afton at the intersection of Route 151 and Route 6 (Avon Road).

Wednesday afternoon BRL learned that plans are now being explored to located a Dollar General in Piney River of Nelson County about a mile or so north of the Amherst County line.

“At this time, we are currently in a due diligence phase for a new Dollar General located in Piney River, Virginia in Nelson County. This means we are reviewing the opportunity to add a new store in the area, but we have not committed to doing so just yet. Based on our current timeline, we anticipate to have a final decision on this location by early spring 2018. Feel free to check back periodically for updates.

When choosing store locations, meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority. The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice. We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three to five mile radius, or 10 minute drive. We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration.” Laura Somerville with Dollar General Corporation Communications Goodlettsville, Tennessee told us Wednesday.

BRL also found where a move is underway to rezone parcels of property in Piney River to business allowing construction of a new retail store.

Rezoning #2017-03 – Agricultural (A-1) and Residential (R-1) to Business (B-1) / The Broadway Group, LLC / Robert and Lynn Payne
The purpose of said public hearing is for the PC to receive public input on a Rezoning application. The subject property is located in Piney River at 3853 Patrick Henry Highway. The subject property is Tax Map Parcel #64-A-93(0.96 acres), owned by Lynn and Robert Payne, and zoned residential (R-1) and agricultural (A-1). The applicant seeks approval to rezone the parcel to Business (B-1) to “Construct a new commercial retail store.”

The Broadway Group, LLC has developed properties for Dollar General and is the same development company working on the Afton / Avon location.

We will keep you updated.
