Nelson : Benefit For Injured Nelson Cycling Icon Martin Versluys A Resounding Success

0
Thanks to Diana Marchibroda for these wonderful photos : Martin Versluys (left) along with his wife Kathy speak to the crowd this past Saturday night – June 10, 2017 during a benefit fundraiser at RVCC for Martin. He was severely injured during a bicycling accident on Mother’s Day weekend when a driver turned in front of him on Route 151 at Martin’s Store in Nelson County. His recovery has been described by many as miraculous.

Greenfield / Afton
Nelson County, Virginia

For weeks we have been telling first about the major cycling accident involving Nelson cyclist Martin Versluys, and now his tremendous recovery. During the first couple of days after the accident it was touch and go. Today Martin is up on his feet and very mobile! Though there’s still lots of recovery, he’s very much on the mend!

Tanya Anisimova, a world renowned cellist, and former neighbor of Martin and Kathy performs during a benefit fundraiser this past Saturday night – June 10, 2017 at the Rockfish Valley Community Center in Afton / Greenfield.

“Words can’t adequately describe cello maestro Tanya Anisimova’s fabulous concert tonight—Of course, it was to celebrate Martin’s amazing recovery and rebounding strength, but it was also a creative salute to the enormous generosity of this community.

I think everyone in the audience was awed by her commanding and emotional renditions of familiar pieces, and her whimsical improvisations where her voice became another instrument. She is a FORCE! Thank you, Tanya!

Another miracle is how you magnificent concert organizers were able to pull this off in just over 2 weeks! All the myriad details, from promotion to venue preparation and ticket sales, meshed perfectly. We are deeply impressed!

To everyone who attended we are profoundly grateful. Thank you for enabling such a beautiful evening, and of course for the funds you all raised on our behalf at this event and the various other campaigns.

Martin continues to improve, as you all saw. And I’m continuing with the smoothie/soup marathon to keep him from losing any more weight. (Now if I could only turn him into a couch potato, I might succeed–trying, ha!—at least to get him to rest.)

One thing is for sure, the enormous assistance we’re receiving is not lost on us. We’re more devoted to staying involved in the community than ever! Thank you all so much!” his wife Kathy said in an email Sunday afternoon.

Folks look on during the benefit concert this past Saturday night – June 10, 2017 for Martin Versluys who was severely injured in a bicycling accident Mother’s Day weekend 2017.

In excess of 100 people attended the concert performance raising more than $3,500.

Keep up the great recovery Martin!

Waynesboro : Main Street Bridge Set to Open This Friday June 9th

Waynesboro
Augusta County, Virginia

The new Main Street (Route 340) bridge over the South River in downtown Waynesboro is scheduled to open Friday, June 9. Drivers using Main Street between Race Avenue and East Avenue have followed a detour route since February 2016, but the detour will be lifted when the bridge opens to traffic. All work is weather permitting.

The new South River bridge replaces a 1934 structure that was restricted to vehicles weighing no more than 15 tons. The new bridge will be open to all legal loads. It was constructed with innovative corrosion-resistant steel beams designed to extend its life. The bridge has two 12-foot travel lanes, two 6-foot bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides of the roadway to improve pedestrian access.

The Virginia Department of Transportation worked with the city of Waynesboro on design features that complement the city’s downtown, the nearby Broad Street bridge and the adjacent Constitution Park. Lighting on the underside of both bridges illuminates a recently completed portion of Waynesboro’s South River Greenway trail.

The Main Street bridge project also included the relocation of McElroy Street, which ran through the center of Constitution Park between Main Street and Short Street. The new road (renamed Race Avenue) is 200 feet further west, reclaiming green space within the park.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded a $7 million construction contract to Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville. The contract completion date is December 2017, which allows time for additional landscaping work this fall.

CVEC will employ technology that provides estimated power restoration times (ERT) to members during outages. Members who currently use the MyCVEC Mobile app on their smartphones or subscribe to the texting service receive an alert when their power is out, as well as confirmation of the restoration. On June 5, estimated restoration times will be an added function of the MyCVEC Mobile app and text service and will provide members with critical information during an outage. The outage map located on the mycvec.com website will also display estimated restoration times for each outage.

“When the power goes out, members contact us to report the outage and they naturally want to know when they can expect it to be restored. Now, members can have that information sent to their phones, saving them the time of having to call or go online to look for updates,” offered CVEC President, Gary Wood.

The MyCVEC mobile app is free to download and was implemented in January 2015 to allow members to make payments, view their accounts, and report outages. ERT is a welcome addition to the app and texting service and is expected to be well-received by members.

“CVEC is pleased to use this technology to communicate with members during times when they are counting on us to keep them informed. Almost everyone has a cell phone these days and now members can get information via the mobile app or text automatically,” continued Wood. “We are always looking for ways to better serve our members and this is definitely a step in the right direction.”

The Old Rockfish Post Office

©2017 Blue Ridge Life Magazine : Photos By BRL Photographer Marcie Gates : The beautiful weather we saw heading into the weekend made a perfect backdrop for our Marcie Gates to get this shot of the old Rockfish Post Office in east Nelson County.

Rockfish / Schuyler
Nelson County, Virginia

The old Rockfish Post Office is a favorite landmark for many people across the country. Rockfish is the spot that was often highlighted in the the television series The Walton’s. That show was loosley based on the childhood of Nelson native and the show’s creator, Earl Hamner, Jr.

The old post office used to be the way people in that area got their mail until it was eventually closed and consolidated into other area post offices.

Marcie sends us pics of beautiful and sometimes crazy things from daily life in the Blue Ridge. Her photos are posted daily on our Facebook page, click here.

Lots of life stories were told from this very porch!

Just another reason we all love living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia!
