Wintergreen : Black Bear Wanders Into Fire Station On The Mountain

Some stations have spotted dogs. When your station is in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains you just never know what might wander in the bay.

Recently firefighters Buddy Ford and Deric Meakins surprisingly bumped into a black bear in the station. Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time this has happened, but it is the first time it’s been captured on video.

For the first time in a decade DBBC support staff and management have a place to locate and work from. The Devils Backbone Headquarters opened earlier this week in Roseland just across the way from the brewpub and restaurant.

“It is a wonderful healthy environment with work stations, a kitchen, game area, educational loft and outdoor decks to soak in the mountains. We have approximately 40 full time staff coming in daily with additional field staff who are mobile,” said Heidi Crandall, Co-Founder of Devils Backbone.

She and her husband Steve started the brewing and restaurant operation back in 2008. Since then the company has exploded across the Eastern United States and was eventually purchased by Anuhesr Busch back in April of 2016.

This is a gorgeous and contemporary building that brings the DB family together in one spot instead of in hidden corners at both locations,” Heidi continued.

The new building was designed and built by Tectonics II in Roseland, Virginia.

Severe Weather Possible Across Blue Ridge Today

0
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the Central Virginia in the slight risk category for severe weather this Tuesday – August 21, 2018. That means there Is a decent shot at severe storms somewhere in the area highlighted in yellow.

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

Certain factors are coming together today to create an environment that makes severe weather possible across the Blue Ridge area.

The Storm Prediction Center discusses the potential in this post. It’s mostly science and weather speak. But it generally says the chances are there for some severe weather outbreaks in our area. A lot of that will depend on cloud cover. If we get breaks of sunshine the risk for severe storms is greater.

I’ll keep you posted throughout the day should any real concerns arise.

Shortly before 11 a.m., Sunday (Aug. 12, 2018), the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police responded to a residence in the 1700 block of Avon Road. Upon arriving, Alexia S. Lockett, 29, of Afton, Va. was found deceased inside the residence. Her remains were transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Richmond for autopsy and examination.

Further investigation confirmed that Anthony M. Hutchinson, 40, of Waynesboro, Va., fled the residence after fatally shooting Lockett.

The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office received a lookout for the vehicle Hutchinson was driving, a 2014 Nissan Altima, which they located as it was traveling south on Route 29 in Amherst County.

The Sheriff’s Deputy attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle. After the Deputy activated his emergency equipment, the Nissan sped away and continued south at a high rate of speed on Route 29. As the Nissan approached Spencer Mountain Road, it ran off the left side of the roadway and crashed.

As the deputies exited their vehicles, Hutchinson remained inside the Nissan and began shooting at the deputies. One of the deputies was struck. The deputies returned fire striking Hutchinson.

Hutchinson died at the scene.

The deputy who was shot was treated for a non-life threatening injury.

In accordance with Amherst County policy, three deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is being completed.

Strong to Severe Storms Possible Sunday Afternoon Across Some Of The Area

0

Via NWS Blacksburg, VA:

The SPC marginal risk area has been expanded west a little bit. Folks near and to the east of the Blue Ridge should be prepared for the possibility of strong to severe storms this afternoon, possibly as early as noon. Wind damage will be the primary threat. Also of note: the KFCX Doppler radar in Floyd County went down early this morning and El Techs will be trying to get it back up as soon as possible this morning. In the meantime, we have several other NWS radars we will be monitoring around us, as well as excellent satellite and lightning monitoring ability. Nevertheless we hope to have KFCX back up before new storms begin developing.

CVEC Announces Second Stop in Nelson County for Fiber Network Installation

0

Arrington
Nelson County, Virginia

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC) announced the next stop for fiber installation will be in Nelson County in 2019, providing communications for a smart grid system and delivering high speed internet to its members.  Nelson County was selected as the next stop due to the lowest cost to serve based on the county’s consideration of transferring its fiber optic broadband network to CVEC.  “CVEC is pleased to partner with Nelson County to achieve the shared goal of establishing broadband networks in rural areas,” says CVEC President Gary Wood.

CVEC’s construction in Nelson County will be the next stop in a five-year plan to install over 4,500 miles of fiber-optic cable in the 14 counties it serves, providing broadband internet to all of its 36,000 members. The fiber network will use laser beams and glass fibers to move data at speeds of up to one gigabit per second, delivering world-class communications to members served by the Martins Store substation, one of five substations in the county.  The build-out for Martins Store will include over 500 miles of fiber optic cable that will stretch from Afton Mountain down Route 151 to Brent’s Mountain plus the side roads and subdivisions on either side of the main route.  It will also extend down Route 6 from Martins Store to Woods Mill and cover the Route 29 corridor from Davis Creek to Covesville.  Portions of Faber will be included as well as Wheelers Cove and Dutch Creek.

The fiber will reach 4,145 of the 8,781 member accounts in Nelson County. “Families who wish to reside in rural areas should be afforded the same amenities as those who choose to live in urban and suburban areas. The challenge we are facing today mirrors the challenge our members overcame in 1937 when our Cooperative was created to supply power to those who were forced to live without,” says Wood.

The CVEC fiber-optic network will be installed on and adjacent to existing overhead and underground electric distribution lines, utilizing the existing infrastructure. CVEC will install and own the fiber-optic cable, and its wholly-owned subsidiary will offer retail internet and phone services to its members through Firefly Fiber Broadband.  High-speed internet with unlimited data at 100 megabits per second for $49.99 per month or 1 gigabit per second of unlimited data for $79.99 per month are package options offered by Firefly. Unlike many other internet services, the download and upload speeds will be the same on

the Firefly network.  Voice-over IP phone service (VoIP), with unlimited local and long-distance calling in continental U.S., will also be available as an add-on to either broadband service for $29.99 each month. Firefly internet service will include a managed WiFi service, allowing Firefly to assure the best performance for all wireless devices in a home. Subscriptions will be available by spring 2019 to members served by the CVEC Martins Store substation.

As the schedule for construction is set, new substation areas to be served will be announced.  All information that is available regarding schedule and subscription options for residential and small business is available on the newly launched Firefly Fiber Broadband website, www.fireflyva.com.

CVEC is also proud to announce the hiring of the first employee for Firefly.  Jon Anderson will serve as the General Manager for broadband services.  He previously worked with Time Warner internet in leadership roles in the areas of customer service, network operations center management, field operations and technical support services.  His last position was Vice President of Process Engineering.  Jon will be hiring and developing a new team of technical and customer service experts for Firefly as the company takes flight to bring its customers world class, high speed broadband service delivered over fiber optic cables.  Job postings will be listed atwww.mycvec.com/about-us/careers.

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative is a member-owned, not-for-profit, electric utility serving almost 37,000 homes, farms and businesses in the rural portions of 14 Virginia counties. CVEC is proud to be a Four-Star Cooperative for Service Excellence certified by the Touchstone Energy Service Excellence Program. For more information, visit www.mycvec.com.
