CULPEPER — Route 250 (Richmond Road) is open to traffic just east of Route 744 (Hacktown Road) in Albemarle County. The detour has been lifted.

Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation worked around the clock since mid-morning Thursday to replace a failed pipe that carries Carroll Creek under the road.

Road conditions and other real-time travel information can be found on the 511 Virginia website, the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia. VDOT updates are also on Facebook and the district’s Twitter account, @VaDOTCulp.

RT. 250 EAST IN ALBEMARLE CLOSED TO THROUGH TRAFFIC

Recent flooding washes out storm water pipe, motorists should use I-64 as detour route

CULPEPER — Route 250 (Richmond Road) is closed just east of Route 744 (Hacktown Road) after the recent heavy rains and flooding compromised the road above a pipe that carries Carroll Creek under the road. The road is expected remain closed to through traffic between Route 744 and Route 616 (Black Cat Road) for between 36 and 72 hours while the pipe is dug out and replaced.

During the emergency closure motorists should use Interstate 64 between Route 616 at exit 129 and Route 250 at exit 124 as a detour route. Business and residential entrances on both sides of the work zone will remain open. Detour signs are posted on I-64 and Route 250.

Crews will work around the clock to replace the pipe and rebuild the roadway above the pipe, but motorists, especially commuters, should anticipate Route 250 to be closed at Carroll Creek at least through Friday.

Drivers should check www.511virginia.org or the 511 mobile app for updated information about the road closures and follow @VaDOTCULP on Twitter for updates.

Firefly Fiber Broadband Lands In Central Virginia – Offers Internet Solutions for CVEC Members

0

Arrington
Nelson County, Virginia

Firefly Fiber Broadband is launching in Central Virginia with high-speed internet offerings for Central Virginia Electric Cooperative’s (CVEC) residential and commercial accounts. Firefly Fiber Broadband will be the internet service provider (ISP) for Central Virginia Services Inc., CVEC’s wholly-owned subsidiary. Firefly Fiber Broadband will lease fiber which CVEC is installing to improve communications across its electric distribution system.

With the addition of a fiber network, CVEC will be able to better incorporate smart grid technology into its daily operations, improve integration of distributed energy resources, and help lower power costs through interactive energy management programs. By increasing bandwidth for communications within its system, CVEC will improve efficiency, increase reliability, and expand security. The Cooperative is planning to build a system wide fiber optic network that will eventually connect all distribution equipment on the CVEC grid.  CVEC will own and operate its high-speed communication system and allow Firefly Fiber Broadband to lease the fiber and offer broadband internet service to CVEC members with residential or commercial accounts.

When asked about how the name for the ISP was created, CEO Gary Wood explained that “in the warm central Virginia evenings, the fireflies use the magic of their light to bring beauty to points all across the rural countryside.  Firefly Fiber Broadband will use the magic of laser light beamed through fiber optic glass tubes to bring world class, high speed internet service to points all across the rural area.  Our goal is to make Firefly Fiber Broadband as much a part of our rural lifestyle as the native fireflies.”

Firefly Fiber Broadband will offer high-speed internet with unlimited data at 100 megabits per second for $49.99 per month or 1 gigabit per second of unlimited data for $79.99 per month. Unlike many other internet services, the download and upload speeds will be the same on the Firefly network.  Voice-over IP phone service (VoIP), with unlimited local and long-distance calling in continental U.S., will also be available as an add-on to either broadband service for $29.99 each month. Firefly internet service will be a managed WiFi service, allowing Firefly to assure the best performance for all wireless devices in a home. Subscriptions will be available by the end of 2018 to members served by the CVEC Appomattox substation.

As the schedule for construction is set, new substation areas to be served will be announced.  All information that is available regarding schedule and subscription options for residential and small business is available on the newly launched Firefly Fiber Broadband website, www.fireflyva.com.

Firefly Fiber Broadband is currently hiring for several positions and plans to list additional job openings throughout the next year.  Interested applicants should check the job postings on the CVEC website at www.mycvec.com/about-us/careers.

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative is a member-owned, not-for-profit, electric utility serving almost 37,000 homes, farms and businesses in the rural portions of 14 Virginia counties. CVEC is proud to be a Four-Star Cooperative for Service Excellence certified by the Touchstone Energy Service Excellence Program. For more information, visit www.mycvec.com.

Albemarle : ROUTE 250 BRIDGE AT IVY IS OPEN TO TRAFFIC

0
Photo via VDOT : The new bridge on Route 150 in Ivy reopened one day early on Thursday – July 26, 2018.

Ivy
Albemarle County, Virginia

The bridge on Route 250 (Ivy Road) over Little Ivy Creek near Ivy west of Charlottesville is open to traffic, one day ahead of its scheduled reopening. Crews are now working to remove signs and other detour indicators along Route 250 and Interstate 64.

The project contractor, Burleigh Construction Co., Inc., of Concord, Va., will continue work on the project site to finish the construction. Motorists may encounter single lane closures overnight during the next several weeks as crews complete the job, including installing permanent pavement markings, final grading on the site and removing the equipment and field office.

To minimize the closure time, the contractor used accelerated construction techniques, replacing the bridge with pre-cast box culverts that were set in place in the streambed. Once the culverts were in place the roadbed and travel surface were constructed on top of the culverts.

VDOT worked closely with Albemarle County, local emergency response agencies, businesses and nearby residents to determine the best way to accomplish the bridge replacement. Comments received at the public hearing overwhelmingly favored the two-week closure rather than a
phased construction plan that would have restricted traffic on Route 250 to one lane, controlled by a traffic signal, for at least three months. Scheduling the closure during July avoids affecting daily school traffic and takes advantage of the seasonal reduction in commuter traffic.

Burleigh Construction replaced the structurally deficient bridge, built in 1932, under a $1,277,945.80 contract. The contractor is eligible for an incentive for opening the bridge before the scheduled July 27 reopening date. For more information about the project, see the Route 250 bridge replacement project page on VDOT’s website.
