Hurricane Florence Continues Southward Drift – Better News For Central Virginia – Bears Watching

0
The projected path of Florence as of 8 AM Wednesday from the National Hurricane Center.

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

While the situation is still very serious for folks in the Carolinas, the news continues to improve for those of us living here in the Central Virginia Blue Ridge. The morning update from the National Hurricane Center continues to show Florence making a southward drift. That has now put our immediate area on a far northern fringe of the effects that may be felt by Florence. By no means does this sound a 100% all clear. But it does allow us to breath a little easier.

The estimated rainfall totals that might be in our area as a result of Florence.

Florence is a major hurricane covering a lot of real estate. She’s big. Very. So even if it continues to stay on this track, we will still pickup some rain and occasionally breezy conditions. But not necessarily the scenario that was looking to unfold earlier in the week.

I’ll continue updating for our area as necessary, but do think as long as Florence continues this trend we can rest a bit easier. I will caution, these storms can be highly unpredictable, especially over land once they come ashore. So with that said, we can’t just ignore it either, just yet. But I also have a much better comfort level this morning.

Have a great rest of your Wednesday!

Hurricane Florence Now CAT 4 Targets East Coast For Landfall This Week (Brief Update 11PM Tuesday)

0
NHC’s projected path of Hurricane Florence.

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

See note in below text about 11 PM Tuesday night update. Graphics to be updated Wednesday morning. But A continued southern dip and westward movement now have SC as a target area.

More Wednesday. Tommy

All eyes are on Hurricane Florence as she makes her way toward the east coast. As of Tuesday afternoon’s 5PM update all on the east coast from Georgia to Virginia are keeping eyes on what’s happening with this storm. Mandatory evacuations have now been issued in all parts of the coastal Carolinas. The probability of an east coast strike is highly likely. South Carolina and areas including Southern NC and now even GA are very much in play currently as a target zone. (11 PM Tuesday night update continues showing)

Even inland here in the Blue Ridge significant rainfall & wind could happen.

More updates as we get closer.

-All of Virginia localities saw increased tourism revenue while Virginia reached $25 billion-

Nelson County, Virginia (September 5, 2018) – Data released by the United States Travel Association (USTA) reveals that all regions in Virginia posted an increase in tourism revenue last year.

According to the US Travel Association, tourism in Virginia generated $25 billion in travel spending. Tourism also supported 232,000 jobs in the Commonwealth and $1.73 billion in state and local taxes. The increase is largely attributed to Virginia’s tourism development all around the state, including: new hotels, restaurants, agritourism, craft breweries, wineries, distilleries, cideries, sports, outdoor recreation, festivals and events, music venues, wedding venues, meeting and convention venues, attractions and so much more. Virginia’s changing tourism product makes the Commonwealth a destination for authentic travel experiences and thriving communities.

Tourism was again an important contributor to the local economy in 2017. Tourism revenue for Nelson County reached $207,410,590, a 4.2 per cent increase over 2016. Local tourism-supported jobs totaled 1,771 while local tourism-related taxes were $ 6,098,489. All data was received by the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) from US Travel Association and is based on domestic visitor spending (travelers from within the United States) from trips taken 50 miles or more away from home.

Tommy Bruguiere, Board of Supervisor Chairman and co-owner of Dickie Brothers Orchard, a Virginia Century Farm, notes that “Tourism is a clean and powerful revenue generator for this county and the Commonwealth. Our residents benefit from the jobs, increased property values and amenities that these hospitality and agritourism businesses create.”

“Virginia’s tourism industry is an important diversifier for our economy as it continues to grow and flourish in multiple regions of our Commonwealth,” said Governor Northam. “Travelers are coming to Virginia from across the country and the globe to experience our rich historic attractions, unmatched outdoor recreation offerings, eight oyster regions, world-class food and craft beverages, beautiful landscapes, and exciting arts and culture. These visitors are spending millions of dollars a day, injecting critical funds back into our community coffers and helping to make Virginia the best place to live, work, and raise a family.”

“Our tourism industry is an important and vital component of economic growth and job creation in Virginia,” said Brian Ball, Secretary of Commerce and Trade. “As the tourism sector continues to grow and new product is developed, our communities across the state become even more dynamic and vibrant. Tourism is fortifying towns and cities across the Commonwealth, engaging and unifying our communities, and making it easy to for travelers to discover for themselves why Virginia is for Lovers.”

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Erik Laub prosecuted the case. Jeffery Michael Adams was represented by Rebecca Wetzel from Lynchburg, Virginia.
Formal sentencing is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on November 20, 2018 in the Nelson County Circuit Court.
