Over the James River

Batteau Fluvana On The James
Top above, Al Stacey flies us over The James River near Winginia where the batteau boats are making their way down the James toward Richmond by this weekend. You can see several of the boats off in the distance in front of Al. Below Al is a closer shot of Captain Brian Roberts’ batteau, The Fluvanna, along with the crew working down the river. You’ll get to read lots more about Brian in our July issue of NCL out next week!

Monday was a hot day with very isolated thunderstorms, but where they did pop up they were intense. Our photographer Paul Purpura who was out shooting another story grabed a couple of shots of the damage last night. You can see our original post about the storms Monday here.

Most locations didn’t get any rain. The ones that did generally got about 1/3 of an inch. Here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield we didn’t get a drop. But we reached a high of 96 degrees. Toward Lovingston where the bulk of the rain fell Our NCL-Tiger Fuel gauge picked up .32 inches of rain with an afternoon high of 95 degrees. You can view other rain totals across the county here.

On the current surface map below, two high pressure areas off the coast have been keeing us hot and muggy. That continues today, but more widespread, perhaps severe thunderstorms will move in this afternoon and tonight.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, a cold front moves through the area over the next 24 to 36 hours eventually bringing in milder temps for the remainder of the week. Some storms later today may become severe with hail and damaging winds.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today Mostly sunny this morning, with partly cloudy skies this afternoon. Scattered heavy thunderstorms developing about 30% of the area by afternoon. They increase by evening.

Fortunately, the tanker is only loaded with milk and is on the shoulder of the road. I-64 is open, but exit 99 eastbound side is closed and traffic cannot exit there.

Storm Damage Shipman on 56
Near Shipman, Virginia along Route 56 – This is just one of the many trees along with power lines down in that part of the county.

CVEC Crews @ Martin’s Store Substation
Martin’s Store – CVEC crews meet at the Martin’s Store substation at Route 6 & 151.

As many of you know portions of Nelson were hit with some very intense thunderstorms this afternoon around 4PM. Most people never saw a drop of rain, but where the isolated storms developed they were strong. The lightning was very intense, I know, we were up in a helicopter getting ready to land as the storms approached.

We just got power back here in Greenfield after 2-3 hours without it.

This is a biref update with more updates later tonight and Tuesday.

As of 7:09 PM most of the western sections of the county are back with power. Wintergreen, Nellysford, Afton, etc. However, many sections south and east of 29 toward Lovingston do not have power. Some trees are down in the Shipman area and power lines are down there as well. We understand the communications center at the sheriff’s office is having limited telephone service as well.

Though very isolated, the storms have caused a great deal of problem in that part of the county.

More updates as we have them.

Dog Days In The Shade
Roseland, Virginia

Dog Days in Roseland

Summer doesn’t officially begin until later this week, but you can’t tell the cute dog above that. He found a cool spot in the shade right in the lap of this lady enjoying a nice day at Johnson’s Senior Home in Roseland. For the first part of this week you’ll need plenty of shade as the temps will be hot today. Yesterday we reached an afternoon high of 90 degrees at 3:20 PM here in Greenfield at NCL-Nelson County LIfe Magazine. Upon the mountain at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation they reached a Sunday high of 81 degrees around 1PM. We’ll see another hot day today & Tuesday but showers and storms move in Tuesday afternoon and evening moderating the temperatures for the remainder of the week.

On the current surface map below, high pressure will keep skies mostly sunny today with hot temperatures.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, by afternoon high pressure still remains in control but a cold front begins approaching the area overnight and increases chances for storms in the afternoon Tuesday. A stray afternoon thunderstorm is possible late this afternoon with daytime heating, but most people will stay dry and not see any rain.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today Mostly sunny this morning, with partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. Very isolated thunderstorms possible in about 20% of the area by late afternoon.
*High temps in Roseland, Lovingston and Faber 93 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Humpback Rocks, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, sunny in the morning, partly cloudy in the afternoon with very isolated t-storms late afternoon. Highs top out around 84 degrees. Winds W-5 MPH.

*Tonight any remaining isolated thunderstorms ending shortly after dark then partly cloudy. Patchy fog in any areas that get showers.
*Lows valley 64 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight mild, lows of about 64 as well.
*Winds S-5 MPH.

*In the extended outlook
Tuesday partly sunny, hot with scattered afternoon thunderstorms likely. High 94 valley – 74 on mountains.

Wednesday partly cloudy in the morning, cooler. Highs around 85 valley around 73 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the mid60’s for the first part of the week, cooling to the upper 50’s by Wednesday night.

The remainder of the week looks generally dry with partly to mostly sunny skies by week’s end and temperatures in the mid 80’s with overnight lows in the mid and upper 50’s.

Below, No doubt you’ve seen the sign and the umbrellas set up on the parking lot of Ski Barn at the intersection of Route 664 and 151. That’s Robert Chisolm’s new Blue Ridge Seafood on wheels! It’s good, we just bought some today! Robert is on the lot every Wednesday through Saturday afternoon. His stuff is fresh, he makes the run frequently.

And just up 151 north of Nellysford on 151 Kelly’s Produce, Plants and Primitives is now open as well. Just ask Kelly Kahle’s daughter Kennedy and son, Bryant. They are out raising the open flag near the road along 151. She’s got lots of produce, plants, and other really neat stuff there.

Lovingston – Saturday night at Rapunzel’s

Rapunzel’s

Saturday, June 16:
Gene & Gayla Mills join up with Front Street for an
evening of folk and country music. Gene Mills is one of the most talented
songwriters to grace our stage, couching his sometimes clever, sometimes
thought-provoking material in immediately engaging melodies and smooth, deep vocals. With
Gayla providing bass and harmony, this duo is truly remarkable.
Front Street, composed of Bill and Linda Staton and Ginger Anderson,
brings us a blend of original and contemporary folk music along with some of the
sweetest three-part harmonies you’ll hear. All three members of this trio have
gorgeous voices and delightful taste in music, and we expect that the entire
show will make for a lovely way to spend a Saturday night.
The show starts at 8pm/$5.

Fog on the slopes @ Wintergreen & droplets on a day lily
Wintergreen Mountain, Virginia

Foggy Lift

droplets

Thursday was a gloomy day across Central Virginia and Nelson County. If you were up on the mountains anywhere you were in the clouds. A low gray level of clouds blanketed the area all day. In the pictures above Paul Purpura caught a shot of an almost ghostly looking ski lift at Wintergreen. Below that, using his super duper lens, he got a fantastic closeup of water droplets on a day lily on the mountain. I was up there at lunch Thursday, it was one soggy day.

Over the past 24-36 hours many folks have seen over an inch of rain while others have barely seen a tenth of an inch. Generally speaking most everyone has seen a little something though. Today we’ll pretty much stay socked in with the clouds for one more day before the weather begins a major improvement.

On the current surface map the stubborn low off of the New England coast continues to spin clouds our way. Old moisture areas continue to hang in the Central VA area as well. Eventually high pressure will win out and we’ll begin to see clearing skies by the weekend. I think we might even see a peek at the sun late today in some locations.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, not much happens today and it will look much like Thursday did. Winds will go more southerly, so we warm up just a tad more than Thursday. Low gray clouds with scattered rain showers. If we do get a little sun we could see an isolated thundershower develop, but that is a long shot.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today Mostly cloudy, still cool with passing showers on occasion. Patchy fog early, then light showers throughout the day, but only about 20% of the area will see them at any given time. We may see breaks in the clouds by late afternoon.
*High temps in Shipman, Tye River, and Woods Mill around 71 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, mostly cloudy very foggy with misty rain most of the day. Highs top out around 67 degrees. Winds S 5-10.

*Tonight Mostly cloudy trending to partly cloudy after midnight. Fog developing again.
*Lows valley 58 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight low of 55.
*Winds S 5 MPH.

*In the extended outlook
Saturday Mostly cloudy, slightly warmer.
*High 73 valley – 65 on mountains.
Saturday becoming mostly sunny, much warmer. Highs 84 valley around 73 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the upper 50’s to near 60 valley, & same mountains. By Sunday skies remain mostly sunny with highs reaching near 90.

Next real chances for rain come back in the forecast around Wed of next week.

Remember when severe weather or news breaks out, come here. We’ll have all of the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.

Have a great Friday and weekend!
