Summer Days at Lake Monacan
Nellysford / Wintergreen, Virginia

Summer Lake Days

*See references to severe weather possibility & heat advisory below

Thursday was a perfect day weatherwise. With lots of high pressure in place across Virginia the skies remained sunny for the entire day allowing temps to warm into the 80’s for just about everyone. It was a great day to play in the water like the kid above at Lake Monacan. You’ll be looking for a cool spot today. It is going to be hot, very hot! There is a heat advisory, details below.
And we’ll be doing a special forecast (below) today for the folks making the trip down to Radford for the soccer competition Nelson High is going to play in. This is big, if they win today they go into the final round Saturday. Yvette will be there covering the whole thing and bring you updates right here on the website as the game is played. Be sure to check back often Friday and over the weekend for the most recent info and pictures from Radford. The game starts at 2PM.

In weather let’s first talk about that Heat advisory. Here’s the official version fron the National Weather Service:

URGENT – WEATHER MESSAGE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON DC
351 AM EDT FRI JUN 8 2007

HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
8 PM EDT THIS EVENING…

SOUTHWEST WINDS AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT WILL BRING HOT AND HUMID AIR
INTO THE MID ATLANTIC REGION TODAY. HIGH TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED
TO RISE INTO THE MID 90S BY LATE AFTERNOON. THIS COMBINED WITH
HIGH HUMIDITY WILL RESULT IN HEAT INDEX VALUES UP TO 100 DEGREES.

RELIEF FROM THE HEAT IS EXPECTED ON SATURDAY AS COOLER AND LESS
HUMID AIR MOVES INTO THE REGION WITH THE PASSAGE OF A COLD FRONT.

No need to preach about this and tell you the sky is falling like all of the television forecasters will, just use common sense and you’ll be fine. It’s going to be hot, but it’s no crisis.

On the current surface map below, a warm front has moved north through the area allowing warm muggy conditions to return to Central Virginia. Today dewpoints will be in the 60’s and perhaps even the 70’s. Thanks to SW winds bringing up plenty of warm mosit air.
Current-Sat Surface Map

Below, on the National Forecast Map, a cold front to the west makes its way into Central Virginia and Nelson this evening. Scatttered thunderstorms (some possibly severe – best time between 5-10 PM) will break out this as the front approaches. High pressure takes back over for the weekend bringing slightly cooler temps and sunny conditions.
Today’s Forecast Map

RADFORD SOCCER FORECAST:
If you’re traveling to Radford for the soccer game look for partly sunny skies early in the day, with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. Not everyone will see rain in that area but about 40% of the area will. High temps will be around 90 degrees, so it’s going to be a hot day there as well, just not as hot as here. When the game starts at 2PM look for partly cloudy skies temps right at 90 degrees and scattered thunderstorms in the area. Tonight in Radford look for mostly cloudy skies, thunderstorms scattered about with lows in the mid 60’s. Winds west around 10 MPH with gusts up to 20. Saturday in Radford look for partly sunny skies and scattered thunderstorms again, diminishing as the day goes on. Highs around 85 degrees.

*Today back in Nelson County Hot. Heat advisory from 2 PM to 8 PM Scattered thunderstorms late evening with partly cloudy skies. Again some severe storms are possible.
*High temps in Nellysford, Beech Grove and Arrington around 97 degrees by 5 to 6 PM
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Humpback Rocks, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, partly cloudy with scattered t-storms late, hot. Highs top out around 87 degrees. Winds west 10-15 MPH.

*Tonight scattered thunderstorms increase.
*Lows valley 63 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight lows of about 64.
*Winds West 10-15 MPH.

*In the extended outlook
Saturday partly cloudy with scattered thunderstorms in the morning decreasing by noon and partly sunny. Milder. Highs near 87 valley – 70 on mountains.
Sunday mostly sunny and cooler. Highs around 80 valley around 74 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the mid and upper 50’s Sat & Sunday night.

Again, be sure to check back here often throughout the day for our updates from Yvette at the game in Radford, and for pictures from the action there. We’ll be posting updates during the game as well.

Remember when severe weather or news breaks out, come here. We’ll have all of the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson and nearby counties.

Have a great Friday!

Wreck Scene Wednesday evening along 151
Afton, Virginia

Car Flipped

Wednesday was a really nice day across Central Virginia. Unfortunately this driver above didn’t have such a pleasant day. Folks driving along Route 151 around 5:30 PM saw fire departments and troopers working the wreck just north of Bland Wade Road. The scene was cleared by 7PM.

Temperatures peaked around 80 degrees for most areas below. Upon the mountains a tad cooler. NCL-The Wintergreen Nature Foundation recorded an afternoon high of 71 degrees at 2:13 PM. I was up there at the resort in the afternoon, it was very pleasant.

On the current surface map below, high pressure was parked over northern Virginia Thursday morning. That will keep skies sunny and any real weather systems away from us until tomorrow.
Current-Sat Surface Map

Below, on the National Forecast Map, throughout the day the high pressure meanders to the east over the Atlantic. That will start pulling more muggy feeling air in as we end the day. Plus a warm front to the south will move back north across our area overnight. By tomorrow a cold front approaches and moves through, chances for thunderstorms are back in the forecast by afternoon.
Today’s Forecast Map

Below, to our north and west a large severe weatrher outbreak is forecast today. The high pressure we talked about earlier keeps that away from us, but it will be a very active day in those areas indicated as high risk. Tornados there are pretty much certain.
Day 1 svr weather

*Today mostly sunny & hot.
*High temps in Afton Nellysford, and Faber around 91 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Humpback Rocks, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, mostly sunny skies. Highs top out around 85 degrees. Winds SW 10-15 MPH.

*Tonight clear.
*Lows valley 62 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight lows of about 60.
*Winds SW 5-10 MPH.

*In the extended outlook
Friday partly cloudy with scattered thunderstorms by afternoon. Hot. highs near 96 valley 84 mountains.
Saturday partly cloudy scattered morning thunderstorms. Cooler highs in the lower 80’s valley around 70 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the lmid and upper 50’s.
Sunday mostly sunny with highs in the low and mid 80’s

Massies Mill

Tuesday was a pleasant day across Central Virginia and Nelson County. Humidity levels were lower and sometimes breezy winds made it feel even cool when the sun was behind the clouds. All in all Tuesday was a great day with plenty of sun just like the scene above as you head into Massies Mill from 56 west.

Barn Pong
Last night was a really, really pleasant night in Nelson. We had much cooler temperatures, just perfect for a game of barn pong at AM Fog in Afton. We first told you about those guys about a year ago. They get together every Tuesday night and play ping pong in a barn at Ken & Yvonne Harris’ barn. Some of them have been playing for nearly 20 years!

On the current surface map below, a cold front has moved to our east and is bringing in cooler air for the next day or so.
Current-Sat Surface Map

Below, on the National Forecast Map, northern high pressure will influence our weather over the next couple of days before showers work back in toward the weekend. Highs today will be generally around 80 degrees but warming to the lower 90’s by week’s end.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today will start with isolated showers but turning partly sunny as the cold front exits to our east.
*High temps in Massies Mill, Lovingston, and Schuyler around 80 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Humpback Rocks, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, partly sunny skies later in the day. Highs top out around 70 degrees. Winds NW 5-10 MPH.

*Tonight partly cloudy.
*Lows valley 54 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight lows of about 53.
*Winds S-5 MPH.

*In the extended outlook
Thursday sunny highs near 90 valley 80 mountains.
Friday mostly sunny scattered afternoon thunderstorms high in the lower 90’s valley around 82 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the low and mid 60’s.
The weekend looks partly to mostly sunny right now with high in the low and mid 80’s

Breaking – UPDATED 10:15 AM -Manhunt in Afton – called off – still at large

0

10:15 AM EDT
Escapee is still at large, but the search has been called off for now.

9:15 AM EDT
NCL has learned the Virginia State Police along with Augusta Sheriff’s K-9 unit, and Nelson County deputies are looking for a hispanic male in the Afton, I-64, Exit 99 area.
Earlier this morning a trooper stopped the person for excessive speeding on I-64. The person had no ID on him so he was arrested and placed into custody. The trooper is said to have handcuffed the person then placed him in his car. While the trooper was doing an inventory of the car, the person managed to get out of the trooper’s car, roll down an embankment and escape. The last reported sighting was about 8:30 AM on 250 just west of Route 151.

State Police -Afton
Above, state police meet Tuesday morning near the Afton Post Office while looking for the escapee.

Chopper
Here a state police chopper skirts the clouds above Afton looking for the man on the run from police.

The man is described as a male hispanic wearing a black hat and a black t shirt. He should still be handcuffed if he hasn’t managed to get them off. If you see anyone fitting this description, call the state police or the Nelson County Sheriff’s Department.

More updates as we have them.

Previous post from 8:02 AM EDT
