If you didn’t make it out to the Nelson County Summer Festival this past weekend you missed a great time. The weather was perfect, not to cool, not too hot, it was juuuuust right!

Here’s some of what you missed. And a big thank you to NCL’s Yvette Stafford, isn’t she just a great photographer, I mean realy, really great. OK, I have to say that too you know. But really she is! And NCL’s Paul Purpura, he was out there on Sunday catching some shots as well. OK, Paul is a really great photographer too! But he doesn’t have quite as much control, uh influence over me as Yvette.

Now the pics……

Is that the Honey-Do-Handyman behind those Foster Grants? I don’t think the sunglasses can even make Chris Barksdale incognito, looks like he was enjoying the tunes and one of the many wines at the festival. He’s the guy in June’s NCL page 32 lower left. Call him, he really is good at all of that stuff!

Kids coloring at Nelson Festival

What a great weekend! Perfect for the Nelson Summer Festival this past Saturday and Sunday. We were out there Saturday and our NCL photographer Paul Purpura was on deck Sunday. Above these two girls are coloring, I think…. One of the many things going on at this year’s festival. You can see more pictures from this weekend by going here.

For just about everyone the weather cooperated to have a wonderful weekend and one that wasn’t too hot. Don’t get use to that! The warm & muggies are back on their way for the upcoming week. We did get some much needed rain late last night and very early this morning. Many of you went to sleep with the sound of thunder and flashes of lightning.
Here in Greenfield at NCL-Nelson County LIfe Magazine we picked up .24″ of rain last night and .14″ of rain this morning. So a nice little drink for the yard and garden! Over at NCL-Tiger Fuel in Lovingston they didn’t pick up any rain before midnight, but got just over 3/4 of an inch after midnight in their gauge. You can see more rain gauge data across the county by clicking here. There are some pretty impressive totals in some locations.

On the current surface map below, remaining clouds from thunderstorms overnight will keep us a bit cooler today in most locations, but also provide moisture for the redevelopment of thunderstorms this afternoon.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, a couple of high pressure areas, one off the Mid Atlantic coast and another off the Gulf Coast will bring in warmer much more humid air this week, making it feel more muggy, typical summer weather.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today Mostly cloudy this morning, with partly sunny skies in the afternoon. Scatttered strong afternoon & evening thunderstorms possible in about 50% of the area by late afternoon. The mountains have better chances of seeing the bulk of t-storms, but any of us could get them as the daytime heating occurs.
*High temps in Arrington, Lovingston and Nellysford 84 degrees. If we get more sun from time to time we can easily make 87-88 deegrees today.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Humpback Rocks, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, Partly cloudy in the afternoon with scattered strong t-storms late afternoon. Highs top out around 78 degrees. Winds SW 5-10 MPH. Stronger gusts near storms.

*Tonight any remaining thunderstorms end around midnight. Patchy fog in any areas that get rain.
*Lows valley 65 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight mild, lows of about 62.
*Winds light & variable.

*In the extended outlook
Tuesday Mostly cloudy early, some sun throughout the day. Heavy to strong scattered thunderstorms by afternoon in about 40% of the area. There is a chance we could see some very heavy rain in the storms Tuesday afternoon. Up to two inches. High 86 valley – around 80 on mountains.

Wednesday Warmer partly cloudy with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Highs lower 90’s valley – lower 80’s mountains. Overnight lows generally in the mid & upper 60’s, a bit cooler mountains.

The remainder of the week looks generally the same with afternoon thunderstorms hanging around and muggy conditions until the end of the week when a cold front finally sweeps through and bring cooler temps by the weekend. (Lower 80’s)

Remember when severe weather or news breaks out, come here. We’ll have all of the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.

Have a great Monday!

Just a quick update to the previous forecast from Friday. Looking for mostly cloudy skies this morning going partly cloudy this afternoon. We might see a very light lone shower this morning before the clouds work out. Local radar shows a few light showers around, but the air here is pretty dry so they will have lots of trouble aver making progress. There a a chance of scatttered thunderstorms this afternoon. But not enough to dampen the Nelson County Summer Festival that continues today. We went out yesterday and had a great time. Head on out today if you haven’t been.

Temps may be a bit cooler today in the mid and 80’s vs 90 if the clouds hold in, otherwise previous forcast on track. We’ll have more updates and pic later this evening.

Have a great Sunday!

Friday & Weekend Weather – Nelson County, VA & Wintergreen

Updated for frontal passage 6.22.07 1:03 PM EDT

As the front works its way through the area this afternoon, we’ll see some clouds working through. Some showers have actually broken out along the WV-VA border. Can’t rule out a lone shower or two, but most folks will stay dry. The local sat-radar shows a large ara of clouds working down behind the front from WV and OH. High pressure is doing a good job of moving it along quickly, but we may see a period of mostly cloudy skies this afternoon before cleaing out later.

Thursday was a perfect weather day across Central Virginia. Though the temps easily made it into the upper 80’s in some locations, the humidity was low, so if felt mighty fine! This weekend should be a great one as well for the upcoming annual Nelson County Summer Festival at Oak Ridge Estate. This year, like them all, will be fantastic and lots of fun. We’ll be there! See you there too!

While we’re on the topic of cooler temps. I got an e-mail recently from Larry on the mountain.

Larry wrote:
At 8:30 AM (Fri, 22 Jun), WG Weatherbug 61, our digital thermometer (Devils Knob
3rd tee) 61, Channel 4 reports WG at 61, but Nature Foundation 71. The WG Nat
Foundation temp record also indicates a high for the month of 90.5. No way —
it\’s seldom we even reach 85. I may head over to Nat Foundation today with a
thermometer.

Larry has noticed some unusual readings on the NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation Site. Larry has a good point and we have noticed the readings there a bit high too. Though it is very possible to reach temps of 90 degrees on the mountain. It’s a myth that it can’t happen. Rare, but possible. We had some record highs that day all across the area, but Larry’s right, it is a rare bird. Our temperature sensors are actually housed in a globe that looks kind of like window blinds. It is louvered to let the air circulate around the sensor, but keep the sunlight from hitting it. They are pretty accurate, but to get complete precision you have to have a device that actually blows a fan across the sensor. Our sensor is located just above the roof at TWNF so we may be getting some radiational reflected heat from the roof at certain points of the day. We’re going to move it within the next few weeks and see if we can make it more accurate. We love to hear from folks like Larry and appreciate him letting us know about the differences, many times that’s how we find out!

On the current surface map, a weak cold front is working its way through the area now. You can tell as most of the winds now around our area are northerly now, a sing the front is working through.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, by Friday afternoon the front works through the area. High pressure will build in for the weekend bringing seasonal temps and only isolated chances for afternoon thunderstorms.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today Mostly sunny and pleasant.
*High temps in Arrington, Gladstone, and Beech Grovel around 85 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, Mostly sunny. Highs top out around 73-75 degrees. Winds NW 5-10. Some higher gusts from time to time.

*Tonight Partly cloudy & mild.
*Lows valley 55 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight low of 50.
*Winds S 5 MPH.

*In the extended weekend outlook
Saturday Mostly sunny with light NE winds at 5 MPH
*High 85 valley – near 70 on mountains.
Sunday Mostyl sunny & warmer. Highs near 90 valley around 76 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the mid 50’s to near 65 by Sunday evening. valley, & low and mid 50’s mountains. By Monday skies remain mostly sunny with highs in the lower 90’s.

Next real chances for rain come back in the forecast around Wed of next week.

Remember when severe weather or news breaks out, come here. We’ll have all of the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.

Have a great Friday and weekend!

Summer Morning in the Blue Ridge
Three Ridges Overlook

Three Ridges Overlook

That’s a great shot our NCL photographer, Paul Purpura, took of Three Ridges Overlook at Wintergreen. That pretty much captures how the first day of Summer began. Though we don’t officially start summer until 2:06 PM EDT this afternoon, so enjoy your last few remaining hours of Spring mom! My mother back in West Tennessee would much prefer those cooler Spring and even Winter days as opposed to the hot summer days ahead. Today is kind of bittersweet for true summer lovers like me. Today marks the beginning of summer, but it also marks the longest day of the year, after today we begin losing daylight, though it will be about a month before you can see any real difference. There’s lots of summer to go yet! Enjoy!

Wednesday started cloudy with a scattered shower here and there, but quickly cleared and we ended up with a beautiful day across Central Virginia. Overnight we raised the windows. Still have them up now, though we’ll begin to warm quickly by this afternoon, but the humidity will be low so it won’t feel as unpleasant as earlier this week.

With no cloud cover last night we cooled off easily. Here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield we dropped to a low of 49.8 degrees around 6:30 this morning. Oddly, upon Devil’s Knob Mountain at 3500 feet NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation reported an overnight low of 54.1 degrees at 6:11 this morning. If you watch the weather on the mountains you know we can often have temperature inversions where the temps are warmer up above, that was the case this morning. NCL-Delfosse Winery just off Hickory Creek Road in Faber reported a morning low of 57 degrees at 6:40 this morning. Glad to have Claude’s station back online. Think the computer has been in the wine over the past week! They had some computer problems but think they have been fixed. Welcome back!

On the current surface high pressure controls our weather over the next 36 hours. A weak cold front heads our way by Friday.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, the high scoots to the east today keepng us mainly sunny, we will see clouds popping up by afternoon as temperatures climb to near 90. A very isolated thunderstorm is possible today mainly west of Blue Ridge.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today Mostly sunny & warm, with partly cloudy skies by afternoon. Warmer, but low humidity.
*High temps in Afton, Taylor’s Creek, and Faber near 90 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Love, Mostly sunny – partly cloudy in the afternoon. Highs top out around 77 degrees. Winds W 5-10.

*Tonight Partly cloudy.
*Lows valley 59 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight low of 55.
*Winds W-5 MPH.

*In the extended outlook
Friday Mostly sunny with widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms over 20% of the area.
*High 86 valley – 75 on mountains.
Saturday Mostly sunny with a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Highs 83 valley around 72 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the low & mid 60’s valley, & mid 50’s mountains. The remainder of the weekend looks generally dry with mostly sunny skies & temps back near 90 by Sunday

Jennie’s Journal from Israel & Abroad

2

Many of you probably remember Jennie Tal, who just graduated from Virginia Tech last month. Jennie transcribes all of the interviews we eventually turn into stories you read monthly in NCL. You may remember that Jennie was reporting for us here on our website during the unfortunate tragedy at VT back in April. She was the first to break the information on just how serious the situation was. You can read some of her reporting here. You can also read about Jennie’s appearance on TV here.

Jennie is currently away several weeks overseas, spending much of her time in Israel. She’s spending a lot of time there, then traveling to other places around the globe before heading back to Virginia.

Jennie’s keeping a journal of all of the places she’s been and will be heading off to. We’re calling it Jennie’s Journal and it will have a category all its own here on the website. You can also comment at the bottom of her post / journal or ask quesitons, etc. She can reply from wherever she is. Her first post is below so check it out! And come back often to see what else she’s put up. It’s very neat!

Stay safe over there Jennie!

First Entry 6-18-07
Jennie’s Journal

Hello to Nelson County from Israel! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jennie Tal. My parents moved to Nelson about a year and a half ago and run the Mark Addy in Nellysford. I am a very recent Virginia Tech graduate and due to the fact that I have no money and no job (I’m taking suggestions!) I’m on a six-week world-traveling vacation. Sucks to be me, right?

I’ve already been gone for eleven days, and for the first leg of my trip, I was on a Taglit Birthright Israel trip. Since I was traveling extensively around the country of Israel with a very large group, I had no computer and no internet access. So now we get to play a quick game of catch up.

Photo-1
To start of, Israel is a very small country in the Middle East. It is technically located in Asia and is the home of some of the highest holy places for Judaism, Christianity and Islam. While it has been around in concept for thousands and thousands of years, Israel has only been a State recognized by the rest of the world since 1948.

Like I said, I was on a Taglit Birthright Israel trip. Birthright is a program encouraging young people between the agest of 18 and 26 with Jewish heritage to travel to Israel. Because Israel is always looking to increase its population, especially with youth, a free trip is offered to those young people. I got a round trip plane ticket, hotel stays, museum entrances and two free meals a day. It was amazing.

The ten days I was on the trip, I saw most of the country. We started off in Jerusalem seeing the most holy places in the world. We visited the Wailing Wall, what is said to be what’s left of the Western Wall of the Temple built (twice) by the Jews in the biblical era.

Photo 2
Many Jews go to the Wailing Wall to pray. Men and women are separated as they approach the wall, and it is customary to write a small note of prayer and place it in a crevice in the wall. It is so holy that it is illegal to take pictures of it on the Sabbath Day and you have to be dressed conservatively even to get near it.

After we were in Jerusalem for about three days in the sweltering heat, we started to head south. We went Kayaking in the Jordan River and spent a few hours at the Dead Sea. You cannot visit Israel without a trip to the Dead Sea.

Photo 3
The Dead Sea is a sea with so much salt in it that nothing can live. Most oceans have a 3% salt content, while the Dead Sea is about 30% salt. In addition, it is also the lowest place on earth at nearly 1,500 feet below sea level.

Because it is so low, waters from many rivers, seas and oceans drain into it but have no where to go. The only way water leaves the Dead Sea is by evaporating, so all the minerals are left in the water. For this reason, the Dead Sea and products from it are said to be amazing for the skin. We took mud baths and floated in the water (our bodies are more buoyant than the water). You can tell almost instantly that your skin looks and feels healthier.

Next, we got to spend a night in a Bedouin Tent in the Negev Desert. Historically, the Bedouins are a people that move around, mostly in desert areas and make camps. While Israel has a Bedouin population, it is not a Bedouin country, like Saudi Arabia. At the tents we rode camels, ate traditional foods, learned cultures and basically just stayed up all night. We had a bonfire, some wine, some beer and a guitar and that was pretty much all we needed.

We had to wake up at 3am so no one really slept. The reason we had to wake up so early was because we were climbing Masada at to see the sunrise. Masada is a mountain in the middle of the desert. During the time of the Roman Empire, there was a kingdom atop the mountain, an effort to stop to Romans from taking over. When the Roman Army did find a way to get to the top of the mountain, all the Jews at the top killed themselves, rather than surrendering to the Romans to be killed or worse- taken into slavery.

Photo 4
While it does have an interesting history, the watching the sunrise from on top of a mountain is just priceless. Oh yea, then we had to hike down…

After driving through the desert, we spent one day and one night in Eilat, a resort-like city in the southern-most part of the country. With clear beaches, gorgeous beaches, amazing markets and a great night-live, Eilat is the place to be. It is on the Red Sea and from the Israeli city; you can see the Jordanian city of Aqaba and drive to the Egyptian entrance to the Sinai Desert.

On the way back to the major city of Tel Aviv, we had the chance to stop at Yad Vesham, a mountain dedicated to a very moving Holocaust Museum.

Photo 5
Because Israel became a country as a direct result of World War Two, the museum was especially interesting and moving. Literally cut into a mountain, Yad Vesham has a very interesting elongated shape. In it here are personal accounts, pages from diaries, children’s dolls, and even a train car used to take people to the concentration camps.

Finally, at the end of trip, we made our way to Tel Aviv. Though Jerusalem is technically the capital city of Israel, Tel Aviv is where everything happens. Not only is it the business capial of the country, but it is a great, great place for young people. There are beaches, clubs, restaurants and everything you could ever ask for in a city, and we tried a little bit of everything.

Photo 6
To close my first (and very long) journal entry, I just want to explain how safe I feel here. All we Americans see on the news is bad things about Israel. For example, right now there is a great amount of fighting in Gaza. This time, however, Israel is not involved. Two Palestinian groups are fighting each other.

I do see people with guns from time to time, and since military service is complusary, I see many young people in uniforms every day. But, I feel safe. Tel Aviv is just like any American City (but cleaner, with a beach, and in a different language).

I’m having a great time, and I hope everyone over the pond is starting out summer wonderfully.

Thinking of you,
Jennie

Tuesday was another hot day with lots of humidity, so it felt pretty muggy out there. Many of the same areas hit by storms Monday got them again on Tuesday, but less damage happened this time around. Then another round of thunderstorms moved through the area early this morning bringing another round of vivid lightning and rain to the area. Many of us saw much needed showers and thunderstorms, others nothing. Here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield we picked up .22″ of rain since midnight today with a high Tuesday of 94.6 degrees. On the mountain at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Fountadion @ Devil’s Knob, the rain gauge picked up just under a fifth of an inch of rain since midnight at .16″ They touched 90 degrees yesterday around noon for a brief 5 minute period before dropping back to the 80’s. At NCL-Tiger Fuel in Lovingston, they picked up .27 inches of rain since midnight today with an afternoon high of 92 degrees Tuesday.

Many other area gauges got rain during the past 24 hours you can view those totals by clicking here.

On the current surface map below, Wednesday morning a cold front is just about to swing through the area bringing in milder temperatures and clearing skies.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, the front makes it through the area today with high pressure to the NW taking control of our weather. If you look at the local satellite, you can see the high pressure actually pusing the clearing line toward us from WV. We’ll see lots of sun by afternoon.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today Mostly cloudy this morning, with mostly sunny skies this afternoon.
*High temps in Lovingston, Schuyler, and Tyro 85 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, cloudy this morning then mostly sunny. Highs top out around 75 degrees. Winds N 5-10.
