Tuesday was again a hot & humid day. Showers were less widespread, but a couple of very heavy storms got close near Sherando on the other side of the mountain. Here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield we picked up no rain yesterday. We reached a high Tuesday of a hot 94 degrees at 3:07 PM. On the mountain at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Fountadion @ Devil’s Knob, the rain gauge was empty on Tuesday while they reached a warm 84 degree high. At NCL-Tiger Fuel in Lovingston, they had an empty rain bucket as well with a Tuesday high 91 degrees late in the afternoon.

On the current surface map, the scenario is pretty much the same as it was for Tuesday’s weather. A Bermuda high stays in place shoving hot and humid conditions our way today.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, the Bermuda high stays in control. Lots of humidity and heating means we’ll see scattered thunderstorms again this afternoon with some reaching severe limits.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today Partly cloudy hazy, hot & humid. Heat index near 100
*High temps in Wingina, Schuyler, and Greenfield 94 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, partly cloudy with scattered heavy thunderstorms in the afternoon. Hot with highs of 85 degrees. Winds SW 6-9 MPH.

*Tonight Mostly cloudy with thunderstorms until midnight, then patchy fog in areas that see rain.
*Lows valley 69 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight low of 71.
*Winds: SW 5-10

*In the extended outlook
Thursday Partly sunny with afternoon thunderstorms, a chance of a severe weather outbreak is possible Thursday evening. High 93 valley – 79 on mountains.
Friday Mostly cloudy with showers & thunderstorms. Highs 83 valley around 72 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the 60’s to near 70 both mountains & valley.

The weekend promises to be cooler after a front passes the area Friday. Sat & Sun highs will be around 80 degrees both days with mostly sunny skies.

Remember when severe weather or news breaks out, come here. We’ll have all of the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.

Have a great Wed!

Video sample pic

A picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes a still shot just doesn’t do justice when you see something. That’s why we’ve added video to our website now! We’ll be uploading different videos from time to time like the one we put up today. It will look like the sample shown above. To see the video just scroll down below the map box on the left hand side of our webpage page and click on play, that’s all there is to it!

And if you get video you that neat, maybe it a cool storm, some kind of breaking news like a fire, etc you can e-mail us the vido clip to video-at-nelsonscountylife.com and we might post it up there.

Today’s featured video comes from a helicopter flight I recently took with Al Stacey of Gaia Homes in Nellysford. I used to shoot video lots from choppers back in my news days. Al owns a chopper that he leases back at the airport in Charlottesville. On occasion we shoot video and stills out here in Nelson. On this particular day last week we were up shooting pictures over the James River of the batteau boats headed toward Richmond. On the way upstream we caught this black bear crossing the James River headed to the other side. There will be lots more video show over the coming days of our trip down the James.

Al is a very experienced shopper pilot with over 10,000 hours logged in a chopper! That’s more than lots of airline pilots have!

Click play and enjoy!

4th of July on The Mountain… A Family Tradition

Featuring fun, food, family, and two nights of fireworks!

The July 4th celebration is one of the most anticipated family tradition holidays at Wintergreen Resort. And, why not? We’re offering six fun-filled days celebrating the red, white and blue. In addition to the cool mountain breezes that begin the moment you reach the mountain, the fun begins on Friday evening June 29 and includes fireworks on Saturday, June 30 and Wednesday, July 4. If you haven’t experienced fireworks in the Blue Ridge Mountain skies, you won’t want to miss these spectacular light shows.

Festivities include hayrides, ice cream socials, campfires, story telling, chairlift rides, a family movie under the stars, a day at the lake for swimming, boating and fishing plus the annual Arts & Crafts Show featuring more than 30 regional artisans. On Saturday, the Red White & Blue Block Party will have you singing to the ‘folkernative’ sounds of Eddie from Ohio. On Monday, don’t miss Casino Night… ideal for the entire family or just for Mom and Dad while the kids enjoy a night on their own at the Treehouse. Wrap up the holiday with a bang at our Independence Day Concert starring The Worx, a popular Top 40 band, and yet another fireworks display.

Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to escape it all during a horseback ride, a massage at the Wintergarden Spa or even a snooze in the cool mountain air… it’s your choice. And, because you can “stay connected” thanks to high-speed Internet in all accommodations, you’ll want to stay a day or two longer to enjoy your family.

Visit their web site for the special events calendar and more details on Fourth of July festivities at Wintergreen. For availability and information, one of Wintergreen Resort’s “Escape Artists” would be happy to help plan your retreat. Simply call 800-266-2444.

Monday was a pretty hot day with numerous thunderstorms around the area. A couple of severe thunderstorm warnings were issued last night. Here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield we picked up .22″ of rain starting after 8PM. We reached a high of 87 degrees. Dewpoints stayed in the 60’s and 70’s all day so it felt really muggy, you’ll feel that again today, except worse! You can view other rain totals across the county here.

On the current surface map below, two high pressure areas, one off the mid atlantic and the other to our south, will keep us hot and muggy. Scattered, sometimes severe thunderstorms, will form again late this afternoon and evening much like yesterday.
Current-Sat Surface Map

*Tonight heavy thunderstorms early 40% of the area, decreasing intensity after midnight, patchy fog in areas where it rains.

*On the mountains overnight lows of about 67 as well.
*Winds SW-5 MPH.
