Katie Phillips says howdy! And reminds everyone the car wash is back in business. You know the one between Basic Necessities and Blue Ridge Pig. The sign says so! I was there just the other day knocking some mud off the tires.

Did you break a sweat Monday? If you didn’t it’s because you were sitting inside with air conditioning! You’ll need that AC again today and again on Wednesday before we start seeing slightly cooler temps. Yesterday’s afternoon highs were hot, take a look from reports at our NCL Weathernet Stations across the county.

We briefly told you Monday about the neat 1807 Lawn Party held this past Sunday at Oakland Museum. They were showing off some of the progress there and also celebrating Nelson and Virginia’s 200th birthday. Scroll to the bottom of this post for video.

Here’s more of the still pics we promised.

Beth Goodwin
Above, Beth Goodwin far right in costume, gives folks a tour of the Oakland Museum and highlights some of the progress made during the past year.

Bernie
Here, Bernie McGinnis of the museum, talks to the crowd about the renovations thus far and what’s to come.

Parking lot
Believe it or not, one of the proudest accomplishments is a huge new parking lot with plenty of space. Now there’s lots of room for folks to park and visit!

Kaleigh & Beth
You caught a glimpse of, Kaleigh Smith of Roseland on Monday’s weather. She’s the daughter of Betsy and Stuart Smith and the granddaughter of, Beth Goodwin, directly behind her. Both were dressed up just like you would have seen folks way back in 1807!

Band
In between tours and a bit of cake, lots of music entertained the crowd.

Look for more photos in NCL’s August issue!

Want some cake? They were dishing it up yesterday! This was at Oakland Museum’s 1807 Lawn Party & 200th celebration for Nelson County. Many of the folks there were dressed up in period costume much like that you’d see back in 1807. In the picture above, Kaleigh Smith, of Roseland / Piney River, was dressed in that kind of outfit. Be sure to look for more pics from there later today. We already have the video posted to the left in our video widget! Enjoy!

Jennie’s Journal from Israel – Updated 7-8-07

1

REFRESH Nelson County Life Magazine for the latest updates:

Hello to Nelson County from Israel! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jennie Tal. My parents moved to Nelson about a year and a half ago and run the Mark Addy in Nellysford. I am a very recent Virginia Tech graduate and due to the fact that I have no money and no job (I’m taking suggestions!) I’m on a six-week world-traveling vacation. Sucks to be me, right?

After my 10 day Birthright trip (Check out my last journal entry!) I spent 10 days in Israel chilling out max and relaxing all cool. Basically, I shopped and hung out on the beach for 10 days. It was pretty cool, but not too interesting to read about. So instead of boring you with a list of purchased items or day by day pictures comparing my tans, I will write a little bit about the culture of Israel today.

Photo-1
Here I am! My name is Jennie and I’ll be your tour guide today!

Thanks to Ben for helping me by asking so many questions and giving me a starting point!!!

Even though I came to Israel with a lot of young people looking for a good time, it is impossible to experience the country without at least acknowledging the history. A lot of it is religious, mostly focusing around Judaism, Christianity and Islam, but some of the places around the country are thousands and thousands of years old- how can that not be interesting? Most of the oldest buildings and stories come from Jerusalem.

Photo 2

Even though many religions are more than present, Judaism is definitely the predominate religion, and everyone takes that into consideration. There are certain places you have to cover your head (for males) and wear conservative clothing, it is a very religious city.

Behind me you can see all kinds of history. Jerusalem is a walled city, you can see that wall plus a new wall built between Israel and Palestine over the last few years. You can also see the Dome of the Rock behind my right shoulder.

To contrast, there is Eilat, a very touristy city in the southern part of Israel with gorgeous beaches. It also has flea markets (bargain!) with all kinds of homemade and not-so-hand made goods from around the country and the world. It’s a great place to hang out for young people, but I wouldn’t stay there more than a few days, unless you’re OK with beaching it the whole time.

The real hotspot, though, is Tel Aviv. Even though Jerusalem is the official capital of Israel, Tel Aviv is the social, cultural, financial, and governmental center of the country. Oh, and it has spectacular beaches and shopping.

Photo 3

Even though Tel Aviv is predominantly secular, especially as compared to Jerusalem, people are still aware of religion. While I was in Tel Aviv eating out at a nice Italian restaurant, the hostess explained to us that the food served would not be kosher as she sat us, just so we’d know.

When in Tel Aviv, the Carmel Market is something you can’t miss. Like Eilat, it has all the handmade crafts, but it also has various food items- namely fruits, vegetables, spices and bread. On Tuesdays and Fridays, there is an adjacent street, Nachalat Binyamin, that hosts a spectacular array of artwork from local artists trying to sell their work. A must-see.

Well I’ve been in Europe for the last week or so. I need to get my rest so I can gallivant through Paris tomorrow.

You’ll be hearing from me soon!

We’ve been telling you about Robin’s upcoming performance at Cardinal Point all week long. Saturday afternoon she and the band played to a crowd streaming in.

Robin & wine
Though it was one hot afternoon, folks didn’t seem to mind. They threw down the blankets and enjoyed a little cool refreshing wine as the tunes filled the air. Mmmm, wonder where they got the wine? Maybe Sarah!

Robin sang out to the crowd way into the evening.

If you’ve never heard Robin and the band, make it a point to catch her before long at another performance, you can get to her site where it’s linked above for more info.

Talk about a great Friday evening! Jeff & Jan played at Stoney Creek Bar & Grill as part of their weekend summer music series on the deck outside. The weather cooperated, the place was packed, the wine selection was perfect, the tunes were great, and Dale was a perfect host at our table! And what great musicians here in and near Nelson County!

Jeff & Jan
Jeff & Jan are just one of the many acts this summer outside at Stoney Creek Bar & Grill. The manager there, Sindri Linen, has booked some great acts for the rest of the summer. Saturday night July 7, Pixy-Led plays on the deck.

The entire weekend has lots of great entertainment all over the place. Robin Wynn is another favorite over at Cardinal Point Winery earlier in the day. We’re heading over when she starts at 4PM!

Enjoy, the weather will be great all weekend long!
