If you’ve ever dropped by D’Ambolas Restaurant on Route 151 you no doubt seen Vito the cat on deck! Yvette caught this shot of him recently enjoying one of the great summer nights we’ve been having. Thursday was a pretty quiet day weatherwise across Nelson County unless you were way down in the far Southeast section of the county. During the afternoon they got some very heavy rains there.Though none of our NCL Weathernet stations had any rain in them, one of the flood watch systems at Bent Creek did pickup .20″ of rain during the past 24 hours.

Severe weather loomed for most of the 4th of July across our area, but when all was said and done it never materialized. We had plenty of moisture in place, but the dynamics to begin triggering the storms never happened. We did see an isolated storm, but nothing being advertised the NWS and Storm Prediction Center. But you can’t really complain about not having an outbreak of severe weather!

The current surface map shows a cold front to the NW that will work its way toward us today. Local satellite shows plenty of clouds working their way in – in advance of the front.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, the cold front continues to make progress toward Nelson today. Local radar shows showers breaking out now. That will be the trend for the day. We might see a thunderstorm but as long as the clouds hang in here that limits daytime heating which helps fire thunderstorms. If the clouds get some breaks in them we will have no problem warming up quickly since overnight lows didn’t drop much. Enjoy the cooler temps today, a hot weekend is on the way!

Datebook: Afton : Cardinal Point Winery – Robin Wynn Band – July 7th

0

RW-1
The Robin Wynn band brings their mix of rock, pop, and folk music to Cardinal Point Vineyard & Winery.
Saturday, July 7, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Robin Wynn has been building a head of steam on the music scene in Central Virginia ever since the release of her debut CD “Oblivion” in 2004. Textured and varied, her music ranges from soulful ballads to biting anthems, creating a blend of rock, pop, and folk that grabs the ear and goes straight to the heart of every person in the room.

Whether playing solo, or accompanied by her six-piece band, Robin Wynn’s shows are marked with high energy and good spirits, with her distinctive, smooth-like-honey/sharp-as-a-tack vocals cresting the wave. With her ear for hooks, Robin writes music you swear you’ve heard before, yet is always unique and fresh, often drawing comparisons to Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams at her most “Americana,” Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Liz Phair at her rockingest.

A hard-working bunch of players, Robin and her band performed over a hundred shows up and down the east coast in 2006, gathering enthusiasts at every stop. Bandmates include Lea Calvani (Dirty Dishes) on percussion and vocals, John Allietta (Thrum, Naked Puritans) on drums, Clayton Avent (Six Day Bender) on cello and guitar, Blake Wheeler (Bleak, Goldenhour) on bass and vocals, and Mark Goldstein on guitar, keyboards, and vocals.

Spring 2007 marks the release of Robin Wynn’s latest studio achievement “A Few Dusty Miles,” a full-length CD of eleven new songs which includes such favorites from her recent tour dates as the sultry ballad “Bottle,” the quirky half-time rag “Sweet Sally,” and “Soldier,” an instant pop classic that will stay in your head for days – and is also available to listen on her page at http://www.myspace.com/robinwynn

Proceeds from the concert benefit Voices for Animals.

Admission is $10.00 for adults, and includes a wine glass.
Kids under 18 are free. Bring blankets and a picnic and enjoy the outdoors in beautiful Afton, VA.
Inclement weather may cancel; call the winery or check the website for details

Augusta – Tornado Watch until 10 PM EDT – expired

As we discussed earlier conditions have become unstable across the Eastern U.S. and two tornado watches have now been issued. The most recent is near Nelson, but does not include us at this time. I would not be surprised to see the watch area expanded later this evening. Dewpoints are running in the low 70’s so the air is very moist at this time. Again, Nelson is not included in this watch, but is very close to the watch area.

URGENT – IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED

AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS

OTHER WATCH INFORMATION…CONTINUE…WW 482…

DISCUSSION…TSTMS/POSSIBLE SUPERCELLS EXPECTED TO INCREASE OVER WW
THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH THE EVENING AS HEATING CONTINUES IN
MODERATELY SHEARED /40 KT/ ENVIRONMENT INVOF NW FLOW SHORT WAVE
TROUGH. WHILE INSTABILITY WILL REMAIN FAIRLY LIMITED…SUBSTANTIAL
DIRECTIONAL COMPONENT TO DEEP SHEAR WILL FAVOR A SEMI-DISCRETE MODE
WITH STORMS THAT DO FORM. DECREASING LCLS AND STRENGTHENING LLJ
INVOF WARM FRONT OVER ERN PA MAY ENHANCE POTENTIAL FOR LOW LVL STORM
ROTATION INTO EARLY EVENING EWD INTO NJ.

Severe Weather possible later today – watches may soon be issued nearby

0

The atmosphere over Central Virginia is becoming a bit unstable. The storm prediction center is watching area that may require a severe thunderstorm watch later today just to our NE. That is where the bulk of the severe weather should be. We have chances again Thursday. A tornado watch is already in effect to our west in WV

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1380
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1139 AM CDT WED JUL 04 2007

AREAS AFFECTED…DELMARVA REGION

CONCERNING…SEVERE POTENTIAL…WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 041639Z – 041745Z

THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP SHORTLY OVER THE HIGHER
TERRAIN OF THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS…AND THEN INTENSIFY AS THEY
MOVE EWD INTO THE DELMARVA REGION DURING THE MID/LATE AFTERNOON
HOURS. A WW MAY BE NEEDED LATER THIS AFTERNOON.

WV IMAGERY AND MORNING ANALYSIS INDICATES A SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS
CURRENTLY MOVING EWD THROUGH WRN PA AND WV. LARGE SCALE LIFT
ASSOCIATED WITH THESE SYSTEMS SHOULD AID THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT
OVER THE LESS CAPPED HIGHER TERRAIN SHORTLY…WITH STORMS SHIFTING
EWD INTO DELMARVA BY MID/LATE AFTERNOON. ALTHOUGH INSTABILITY WILL
NOT BE PARTICULARLY STRONG…MLCAPES AROUND 1000 J/KG AND
INCREASING DEEP LAYER SHEAR…ASSOCIATED WITH A 50 KT MID LEVEL JET
MAX MOVING THROUGH PA…ARE EXPECTED TO BE FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE
STORMS. ALTHOUGH TORNADOES WILL BE POSSIBLE GIVEN THE STRONG
DIRECTIONAL SHEAR IN LOWER 1-2 KM…THE STRENGTHENING WLY WINDS
ABOVE THE BOUNDARY LAYER SUGGESTS THAT WIND DAMAGE SHOULD BE THE
MAIN THREAT.
