NCL has confirmed the person killed in Tuesday afternoon’s accident on Route 29 just north of Rockfish River Road is 24 year old Brandon Wayne Drumheller of Lovingston. According to our conversation this morning with Trooper Hunter Burkhead of the Virginia State Police, Drumheller along with another passenger, 26 year old Kelly Ann Ragland of Schuyler, were thrown out of the car after losing control then landing upside down in the middle of Route 29 north. Trooper Birckhead tells NCL that neither of the two were wearing their seatbelts which contributed to the very tragic outcome. Kelly Ragland is in the hospital with serious injuries.

Almost all of us here in Nelson know the Drumheller families. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers over the next several days. They are wonderful people and as you can imagine this is terrible for any family to go through.

Hey Folks–Here’s this week’s schedule:

Wednesday, July 4: CLOSED

Friday, July 6: The Accordion Death Squad returns to Rapunzel’s for an
evening of gypsy and klezmer tunes–or, as they call it, “Ratsylvanian gypsy
music.” ADS comes to us fresh from participating in the Shentai circus in
Charlottesville, and we hear they’re going to be travelling again afterward, so if you
haven’t yet had a chance to check this group out, now may be the best time!
The show starts at 8pm/no cover.

Saturday, July 7:
We will be closing up for the evening in order to attend
the annual Azurat music party in Montebello, Va. Richard and Sherri Smith have
been hosting and organizing this wonderful event for years, and, as always,
the music lineup looks fantastic. Join us there if you wish–the info’s below.
Please contact Richard or Sherri if you would like to attend or need further
information.
_________________________________________________________________
Dear Friends,

You are invited to our 6th annual summer music home-party on the Blue Ridge,
Saturday, July 7st , 2007 (optional thru Sunday, the 8th).

In addition to the many fine performers who will share their talent with
you, we are pleased to welcome a group of artisans this year who will
display their expert craftsmanship. Check out all these talented folk
(below) by linking to their websites via their links on our site
www.azurat.com:

On stage (not in this order) enjoy the melodic gifts of: Danny Schmidt;
Andy Waldeck; Joia Wood; Stevie Jay; Bill Adams; Blue Line Highway; Molimo;
Stephen Nachmanovitch; blue stone sky; Ralph Rush; Michael Cvetanovich;
Thistlewood; Head Band; The Invisible Hand; Lawton & RW Smith; Minh Martin;
The Last Straw; Gwen Pell; Anne Obrien; Pam Buckland.

Under the artisan tent peruse the creative talents of: Peggy Printz – fiber
art & beadweaving; Terry Porter – ceramics; Yates Spencer – metal sculptor;
Maggie Stultz -ceramics; Sally White – fabrics; Minh Martin – blown glass;
Judith Ligon – jewelry; Jo Perez – stained glass; Studio Tour
Representatives; Artisan’s Center of Virginia

This year’s party benefits the Artisans Center of Virginia. “Create Craft,
Create Community” (www.artisanscenterofvirginia.org). ACV believes that
quality, handmade fine craft strengthens the cultural, educational and
economic vitality of local communities. They support and promote the
culture of Virginia artisans through education, entrepreneurship, research,
galleries and exhibitions. In addition to hosting the ever-popular Studio
Tour once a year to give local artisans visible exposure, ACV also features
juried exhibitions at their Waynesboro gallery throughout the year (If you
have never been, it is a must-visit!). We are very excited to announce that
ACV is soon to establish their first branch in Charlottesville….it’s time
to get the word out!

We (Fran, Sherri & RW) are also thrilled to announce this year that Sara and
Bob Taylor of Rapunzel’s in Lovingston are co-hosting with us. Rapunzel’s
just received their 501c3 non-profit status to begin providing special music
programming and educational opportunities and we want the world to hear
about it! This will open all kinds of new doors for Rapunzel’s and we are
pleased to have their support as we as we raise money for ACV this year!
Artists supporting Artists.isn’t that what it’s all about!

Here’s a quick gist of the happening:

On Saturday, the 7th of July, the music begins at noon. As is the custom,
EVERYONE who participates donates their time and talent to make the day a
success. There’s no charge to attend the celebration, however periodically
throughout the weekend we will pass the “artisan basket” around the audience
for ACV. In addition, the musicians and artisans will have CDs and
merchandise available. Your generous support of independent artists is
encouraged!

Our stage is back dropped by mountains in a gorgeous Blue Ridge hollow with
fantastic natural acoustics. There’s 53 mountain acres with lots of great
places to hike and camp. If you decide to camp you will need to bring your
own gear….it’s rustic. Sorry, no camper-trailers. If you aren’t a camper
but want a place to stay, drop us an email and we’ll send you a list of the
local B & B’s and hotel/motels in the area. If you’ve never been out to
the mountain before, email us for directions.

BYO whatever libations & picnic fare you enjoy…and don’t forget your
potluck contribution. Dinner is family-style (6pm-ish). After dark we will
set the bonfires, light sparklers, eat Smores and rock on into the night.
Dress for comfort.hot by day/cool at night. We recommend lawn chairs,
picnic blankets and sun protection. Rain or shine. No pets please.

On Sunday morning we’ll perk the coffee, stoke the campfire and set out a
light breakfast (it’s on us!) for those who decided to camp over. A music
jam organically begins late morning, winding down as the festivities come to
a close at 1:00 pm.

We look forward to sharing a relaxing day of great music supporting the arts
with you!

Warmly,
Fran, Sherri & RW (Smith) with Bob & Sara (Taylor)

P.S. Please pass this along to anyone you know who may be interested in
attending!

So what is the history of Azurat? The annual 4th of July party began in the
year 2001 as an inspiration of RB & RW Smith, on RW’s birthday, to share
what they both dearly love (besides Fran and Sherri)….great music and the
company of dear friends. As is tradition the party has always benefited a
nonprofit organization and in RB’s memory, the tradition continues.
Throughout the rest of the year Azurat supports up-and-coming talent &
independent artists through the promotion and production of their craft,
whether musical, theatrical, visual, craft or media based. Azurat Hollow
is located an hour south of Charlottesville, VA on the very top of the Blue
Ridge. For more information or to get on the Azurat list, contact us at:

Tuesday Weather & July 4th Forecast – Nelson County, VA & Wintergreen

Sand Castles at Lake Monacan
Nellysford, Virginia

Sand Castles @ Monacan

Monday was about as perfect a day weather wise that you could find. A great day to build sand castles like the ones NCL photographer, Paul Purpura, caught at Lake Monacan Monday afternoon. You can see more of the neat pics by clicking here.

NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield we reached an afternoon high of 81 degrees at 3:41 PM. We have been cool the last coupe of mornings dropping to 55 degrees both Monday & this morning. Over on Hickory Creek at NCL-Delfosse Winery, Claude’s station reported and afternoon high of 79 degrees at 4:45 PM Monday afternoon.

On the current surface map high pressure to our north continues to control the weather, but is losing its grip over the next day. Partly cloudy skies will be the order for Tuesday, but a disturbance this afternoon may throw mostly cloudy skies our way late. Local satellite shows some clouds moving our way from the NW. Though I am not confident they will make it here, we’ll just have to see.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, the high moves east this afternoon allowing a more southerly flow. At the same time a warm front will move over our area from the south tonight bringing in higher dewpoints making the air feel more muggy by the 4th, and increasing chances for thunderstorms.
Today’s Forecast Map

The Storm Prediction Center has us near the slight risk area for severe weather on the 4th of July. Though I think the chances are best Thursday as a cold front gets closer, and gives us a better chances for more organized thunderstorms.
Wednesday Severe Outlook

*Today Mostly sunny this morning, partly cloudy skies this afternoon. A very slight chance of an isolated thundershower, best chance on and west of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
*High temps in Nellysford, Massies Mill and Schuyler 81 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, partly cloudy with an isolated aftern shower or thundershower. Highs top out around 75 degrees. Winds S 5-10 MPH.

*Tonight partly cloudy with a stray shower ending after dark on the mountains.
*Lows valley near 60 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight lows of about 52.
*Winds S 5-10 MPH.

*In the extended outlook
4th of July Partly cloudy, warmer and more humid. Widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms late High 85 valley – 76 on mountains.
Wednesday night – widely scattered thunderstorms over 30% of the area early, then diminishing by midnight.
Thursday scattered afternoon thunderstorms, even warmer & muggy. Highs 89 valley around 76 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the mid to upper 60’s valley – 50’s mountains.
Friday, partly sunny, scattered afternoon thunderstorms with highs in the upper 80’s.

We got some really good news into NCL this afternoon. Remember that nasty wreck on 151 back on May 12, 2007

Mr. Campbell and Scruffy from Stoney Creek Pharmacy were in that accident. Ever since then Mr. Campbell has been recovering in Charlottesville.
Cheryl sent along this photo of the two from this past weekend. Scruffy even got to go visit over the weekend!

NCHS Soccer History Clarification

1

Reader Scott McGary noted this discrepancy in our coverage regarding the Govs soccer team reaching the state finals this year. It is not the first time in the school’s history that an athletic team has reached the state final:

Our Track Program has 7 (I believe that is accurate) team State Championships including the Single A Boy’s Outdoor Title in 2005, which they won at Radford University as part of the annual Championship Jubilee Radford continues to host. Our Baseball Program lost the AA State Championship game in 1982 to Fort Defiance HS after winning the Region III title and a home state semi-final in front of an equally vocal and supportive community of fans as our soccer team experienced this year. I was one of the nearly 100 students that rode “spirit busses” to Gypsy Hill Park in Waynesboro/Staunton for the state final.

Thanks Scott for keeping us in check!

Painting the sign @ Garden Trade
Route 29 and 6 intersection
Faber, Virginia

Sign painting
If you’ve driven by the intersection of Route 6 and U.S. 29 then you have no doubt noticed the old Walton’s Mountain Country Store sign disappearing as the new Garden Trade sign takes it’s place. Last week the painter was up in the hot sun making progress.

Sign completed
By this past weekend most of the sign was done except for a few finishing touches to come.

Half of the weekend turned out great with perfect weather by Sunday. Temperatures were 10-15 degrees cooler than last week and the air felt much drier. Saturday was a mostly cloudy day until late in the evening with some sun working in just before dark. Sunday’s high here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield was a pleasant 85 degrees with humidities in the upper 30 and low 40% range all day making it feel really comfortable.

While we are on it, for the month of June we recorded 2.04″ of rain. Our high for June was 98 degrees on the 8th of the month. The lowest daytime high for the month was 65 degrees on the 14th. The lowest nighttime reading was a chilly 49 degrees on the 7th. You can look at all of the archive data from our NCL-Greenfield station in the month of June by clicking here.

On the current surface map northern high pressure will control our weather bringing pleasant temperatures once again and a light northerly wind on Monday.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, the high pressure area situated over the Great Lakes region will slowly move easterly but continue to influence our weather over the next 48 hours.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Today Patchy fog in the early morning then sunny and pleasant.
*High temps in Faber, Tyro, and Colleen around 80 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Humpback Rocks, Devil’s Knob, and Montebello, Mostly sunny and mild. Highs top out around 70 degrees. Winds N 5-10 MPH.

*Tonight Mostly clear and cool.
*Lows valley 55 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight mild, lows of about 48.
*Winds East around 5 MPH becoming more southerly after midnight. (This factors into our extended forecast)

*In the extended outlook
Tuesday Partly sunny with humidity slowly increasing due to those southerly winds. High 84 valley – around 79 on mountains.
Winds: S 5-10

4th of July Warmer partly to mostly cloudy with scattered afternoon thunderstorms returning and humidity levels increasing again making it feel sticky again. Highs near 90 valley – near 82 mountains. Overnight lows generally in the low & mid 60’s, upper 50’s mountains.

The remainder of the week looks generally the same with afternoon thunderstorms hanging around and muggy conditions until the end of the week. Temps generally in the upper 80’s for daytime highs.

Remember when severe weather or news breaks out, come here. We’ll have all of the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.

Have a great Monday!
