Don’t get alarmed by today’s weather picture! We didn’t have a blizzard last night on the mountain. It’s just one of the winter scenes you’ll see this weekend at Christina Kline’s show. But it does make you think of the colder days ahead. Hard to believe summer is just about done.

Tuesday was pretty much a sunny day. We started off with some cloudiness early. By afternoon we saw more sun than clouds. Some widely isolated thunderstorms even popped up a couple hours before dark but the majority of the activity stayed west of the BRP and fizzled out after daylight. We’re headed into a pretty quiet period weather wise over the next 5-7 days. There’s a slight chance of a thunderstorm on Thursday as a front moves through, but not much. After that it looks very nice for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

CK-Fall Colors

Before I tear off into Monday’s weather I want to officially welcome Christina Kline to Nelson County Life Magazine as our Wintergreen Mountain Resort photographer. You’ve been reading Christina’s Nelson Outdoors column for over two years in the magazine. She’s also the manager at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports at The Mountain Inn. Christina’s been shooting a few shots too for us from time to time. She’s a great photographer and we’re so fortunate to have her join us in a more active capacity. She’s also in our Datebook section this week which has more information about her upcoming photography reception and show at The Wintergreen Nature Foundation September 1st. You can find out more by clicking here. Each day of this week we’ll be featuring one of the countless shots you’ll see on display at next weekend’s show. Though some of them may make you think of colder days ahead, we want you to have a sample of you’ll see at her show. See you there!

I also want to throw out a quick hello to Milly Colella in the Rockfish Airpark here in Nelson County, and Alan Faulkner over at KATV in Little Rock, Arkansas. Alan and I worked together in the television news business years ago. He’s now an executive producer I think it is, back in Little Rock. Milly listens to us each morning and Alan called us over the weekend to let us know he’s been checking in on the website. Saw Milly just this past weekend at the Farmers’ Market in Nellysford. Howdy to you both, and thanks for checking in each morning!

Wow! What a treat this weekend. Many of us got much needed rain either Friday, Saturday, or Sunday evening. Folks in the south end of the county didn’t see much rain until Sunday afternoon, but they got a nice soaking around Montebello. I also noticed on the Covesville Store weather site over @ Rick & Sarah Ovenshire’s they had a wind gust of 83 MPH in those storms Saturday night. Wow! We’ll have a slight chance of thunderstorms again today, but nothing like we have seen over the past 2-3 days. Our next best chances for showers will happen toward the end of the week. We will see milder temps Monday, making it back around 90 by Wednesday.

Butterflies in Roseland

It became pretty severe again Saturday night across much of the northern part of Nelson as well. Many folks in that end of the county got a good soaking, some for the second night in a row. Some power outages were reported in the county as well. CVEC said at one point around 300 customers were in the dark Saturday night.

Thanks to Heidi Crandall for sending in the pic above this weekend. We’ve had a pic or two of the butterflies lately, but nothing this brilliant and up close. Heidi is becoming quite the photographer!

Saturday was hot and humid with air temps at or near 100 degrees in the valley and a heat index near 105°. It even made it to 90.7°, might as well have been 91, degrees on the mountain at Devil’s Knob Saturday afternoon. Jeff Stone’s site at NCL-Wintergreen Winery was the hotspot topping out at 100 degrees.

Sunday will be a mainly cloudy day, though I can’t rule out seeing some sun later in the day as some of the fog and low gray clouds from last nights storms burns off. We’ll still have chances for storms again Sunday afternoon.

Local satellite Sunday morning showed some breaks in the clouds.
