Delfosse-Clouds

Finally we’ll begin to see the low gray cloudiness east of the Blue Ridge start to erode Friday into the weekend. Thursday was another cloudy day on the east side of the BRP while folks on the western side saw partly cloudy skies. Unlike the past couple of days, Wintergreen Mountain was pretty much in a shroud of clouds Thursday except for some brief sunshine. You had to get on the western slopes to see any clearing.

Over the weekend look for partly cloudy skies and at least one day of hot weather to return, at least for a bit, before another system makes a run at us on Saturday night into Sunday providing chances for scattered thunderstorms once again. By the start of next week partly cloudy skies return with moderating temps in the middle 80’s.

Paul clouds

As we talked about on Wednesday the low clouds and fog hung in for most of the day …if you were east of the BRP, that is! On the west side of the ridge, again, partly cloudy skies were the order from time to time. For the second time this week damming up against the Blue Ridge Mountains took place like it did on Monday. The hot spot was again upon the mountain at Devil’s Knob where some sun made its way through because it was above the cloud deck.

Today we’ll see the low clouds hang in most of the time very much like Wednesday. A frontal boundary continues to ever so slowly move north across Virginia, but until we get it kicked out of here, expect this stagnant weather to continue. No real storms, no real rain, just those gray low cloudy skies. If we’re lucky we may begin to see some partly sunny skies later in the day, but it will be tough to see much with the front in the area. We should get some improvement by Friday.

The numbers as of 11:59 PM EDT Wednesday night

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine : Greenfield / Afton
Wed High: 77.2° @ 12:31 PM
Trace of rain

*NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation : Devil’s Knob (**warm spot again***)
Wed High: 81.9° @ 1:39 PM
0.16″ of rain

*NCL-Wintergreen Winery @ the foot of Wintergreen Mountain in Beech Grove
Wed High: 80.4° @ 1:09 AM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Delfosse Vineyard & Winery near Hickory Creek : Faber
Wed High: 76.8° @ 12:12 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Tiger Fuel – Lovingston
Wed High: 78.1° @ 3:48PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Mini Tara Vineyards – Arrington
Wed High: 71.2° @ 7:50 PM
0.00″ of rain

Here are other area rainfall totals via Nelson County Flood System Reporting stations.

The stationary front we’ve talked about for the past couple of days hangs in there and provides cloud cover for most of the area. Drizzle is likely especially this morning. An isolated thunderstorm is possible later in the day.
Current-Sat Surface Map

The National Forecast Map shows the boundary holding on longer than we thought yesterday. By Thursday night it should be far enough north of our area to begin seeing partly cloudy skies.
Today’s Forecast Map

Local forecast
*Thursday Mostly cloudy with morning drizzle. Isolated thunderstorms across 20% of the area.
*High temps in Nellysford, Roseland & Schuyler around 79°
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Montebello, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Love, Cloudy & foggy especially on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge, with very isolated showers and thunderstorms.
Highs top out around 72° (if more sun prevails as it did Wed look for highs around 80°)
Winds NE this morning becoming S 3-5 MPH in the afternoon.

*Thursday night Mostly cloudy, mild with drizzle & fog.
*Lows valley around 67°
*On the mountains overnight low near 67°
*Winds S-5 MPH

Friday Partly sunny & warmer
*Highs valley around 90°
*On the mountains around 83°
Winds: SSW 4-8 MPH
*Friday night: Partly cloudy. Lows around 70 valley and upper 60’s mountains.

The weekend Saturday partly sunny skies with hot temps back in the upper 90’s and heat index of 100+ in the valley. Sunday cooler highs in the lower 90s with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Danny Watson for President
Nellysford, Virginia

Danny - Paul

OK, if you know Nelson County Life Magazine, you know we don’t do politics. Far from it. However, we couldn’t resist this shot of Danny Watson outside of the hardware store the other day. Danny, who usually shies away from politics too, was seen wearing the official Ron Paul T-shirt and has the bumper stickers everywhere! He tells us he’s got the stencil on order and is doing a walk next weekend! So which isle are the light bulbs on?

Tuesday was a pretty good day all around. We had clouds and cool temps the first half of the day, followed by warm and humid conditions in the afternoon. Thunderstorms, some severe, moved in for the late afternoon. More or less the north end of the county went without rain and the folks from Brent’s Mountain south got the better rainfall. Glad they got some rain, it has been very, very dry down that way!

Wednesday into Thursday morning will be a transitional day for Nelson. We’ll start out cloudy in many parts of Nelson with partly cloudy skies by afternoon as the stationary front in our area begins to move north and eventually dissipate.

The numbers as of 11:59 PM EDT Tuesday night

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine : Greenfield / Afton
Tues High: 89.8° @ 1:46 PM

*NCL-Mini Tara Vineyards – Arrington
Tues High: N/A° @ 00:00 PM {OFFLINE UNAVAILABLE}
0.00″ of rain

Here are other area rainfall totals via Nelson County Flood System Reporting stations.

A stationary front continues to situate itself over the area for the next 24 to 36 hours. As long as it’s in the area, look for variably cloudy skies and chances for scattered showers and drizzle, especially this morning.
Current-Sat Surface Map

The National Forecast Map shows the boundary holding on for most of the day today into tonight. By Thursday it works northward eventually washing out leaving southern high pressure in control. This will increase our humidity and temps for the end of the workweek into the first part of the weekend.
Today’s Forecast Map

Local forecast
*Wednesday Mostly cloudy with morning drizzle. Isolated thunderstorms across 30% of the area.
*High temps in Nellysford, Rockfish Gap & Stagebridge around 82°
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Montebello, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Love, Mostly cloudy with very isolated showers and thunderstorms.

Remainder of the week Look for partly sunny skies Friday with hot temps back in the mid 90’s and heat index of 100+ The weekend looks to be hot with mostly sunny skies on Saturday – temps in the mid 90’s valley – slightly lower mountains, Sunday cooler highs in the mid 80’s with scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon.

When severe weather or news breaks out, come here. We’ll have all of the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.
