State troopers and members of VDOT assist in taking measurements.

If you’ve driven along Route 151 Sunday morning and early afternoon you have noticed lots of activity at the scene of last Thursday’s deadly accident at the intersection of Route 151 and Greenfield Road. This morning VA State Troopers were back on the scene taking measurements from last week’s accident. It is customary for investigation teams to first mark the pavement with spray paint in the resting position of the cars, then later come back after the scene is cleared to do more extensive measurements and investigations.

Tommy-Speaking
Tommy speaking to RVCC Seniors last Thursday.

Last week we got the treat to speak to the RVCC Seniors about our NCL-Weathernet stations across Nelson County. As you know we put the network in place earlier this year up on the mountain at Devil’s Knob and in several valley locations. To be able to predict weather accurately, you have to be able to monitor it as well. I spoke to the seniors and told them about the varying effects here in the valley vs on the mountains. I had all kinds of fancy terms, but Yvette just calls the Rockfish Valley, the crock pot! We also talked about the new audiocast weather each morning here on the web.

TS-Map
In my other life I did television weather on air. We looked at some of the old newsreels and talked about the way news reporting has changed.

We had a great time and really appreciate the seniors having us as their guest!

So last Thursday morning I was asked to speak to the Rockfish Valley Community Center’s Seniors.. I was there to talk about Nelson County Life’s NCL-Weathernet stations across the county. And discuss why and how weather is different here in Nelson due to the mountains and valleys.

Yvette and I couldn’t stay for lunch, but I wish we could have. This grabbed our attention, and thankfully Bo Holland grabbed this picture for us!

Bet it was good!

Greenfield, Virginia

Early Thursday afternoon just after 1PM two people (we learned late it may be as many as three) Three people were killed in an accident at the intersection of Route 151 and Greenfield Road (State Route 635). We understand it was a mother and her two young children. Virginia State Police Sgt. G.L. Miller tells NCL 48 year old, Laura Cavedo of Afton, was killed in the accident as were her two children ages 9 and 12. One vehicle, seen above, flipped on its side in the middle of the road. Troopers and rescue personnel had the highway shut down for a little over 3 hours while the scene was cleared.

Sgt Miller tells us that Trooper J. Wagner investigated the accident. Sgt. Miller went on to say that Ms. Cavedo was either stopped or slowing down southbound to make a left hand turn onto Route 635. A box truck driven by, Shawn Lloyd, of Ruckersville rear ended the Honda Civic driven by Ms. Cavedo. The impact pushed the car into another oncoming Fisher Auto Parts delivery van which impacted the Civic after she was pushed into his oncoming traffic spinning around. The van then flipped landing in the highway on it’s side. Sgt Miller said all of the people in Ms. Cavedo’s car were belted in on impact but the accident too great to survive. Tragically, the young children were killed at the scene, Ms. Cavedo died a short time later after she was airlifted to UVA.

Though the accident is still under investigation, state police say the facts of the accident are pretty clear. Sgt. Miller says they think Lloyd fell asleep at the wheel, there we no skid marks at the scene which would indicate brakes were never applied prior to the impact. Shawn Lloyd has been charged with reckless driving as of Thursday evening.

None of the other injuries on the scene in other vehicle were life threatening.

Danny Watson campaign continues
Nellysford, Virginia

Ok if any of you have been driving by Wintergreen Hardware lately, you have no doubt seen the brown van parked around the hardware store and car wash. Several days ago we showed you Danny Watson’s effort to promote Ron Paul for president.

We’ve been stopped all over the place and asked if we knew what it was about. Your mind is not playing tricks. Our own Danny Watson has made it a mission to organize a Ron Paul for President campaign right in Nellysford. Danny’s so serious about this he’s been enlisting help from all over the place.

skate & van
Last weekend it seems Danny had his agents, youngsters on skateboards, out to do a little campaigning!

As you entered the drive to the store you’d be greeted and ask to vote by the skateboarder!

Not bad, not bad. Danny is getting very organized, mmmmmmmmm.

Good thing they have the ball bearings for the skateboard there!
