Mountain SKY

Tuesday was another fine day across Nelson and Central Virginia. It was a warm day, but the humidity was a bit lower for part of the day. There’s almost a zero chance for any significant rain over the next 5-7 days. We could see a chance for showers by late in the upcoming weekend, but otherwise look for mostly sunny skies and warm temps. All in all it will be a very nice but uneventful forecast over the next several days.

Stomping

Did you hear it Monday night. Yea, it’s kind of the unofficial end of summer. Labor Day is generally the last celebration of summer as we begin thinking of cooler fall like days ahead. However ….. I don’t think you’ll be thinking of fall just yet. We have several weeks of warm weather left and the official start of fall isn’t until later this month on September 23rd.

Labor Day 2007 is now part of the history books, but what terrific weather we had over the entire weekend. Until late Monday afternoon we didn’t even turn on any A/C. In the weather photo above you can see how crisp and clear the skies were at Wintergreen Winery’s Romp, Stomp and Chomp. There were tons of events all over the place and the weather was simply spectacular!

By the way, we ended up with a high for the month of August peaking at 102.6 (essentially 103 degrees) Our lowest temperature in August was 53.6 and we received 2.30 inches of rain here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield.

By contrast upon the mountain at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation their highest temperature in August was 90.7 and the lowest was 55.9 degrees with 3.66 inches of rain for the month.

Today will be much like Monday. Sunny skies with hot temps around 90. There aren’t any real chances for rain on the horizon until perhaps next weekend when a cold front may make it through here. A weak front will be in the area today, but I don’t expect any real effects from it other than a shift of the winds to the north, but it will still be hot.

One final thing – Not that he’ll be affecting us, but if you’re interested in the track and progress of Hurricane Felix, you can get more information by clicking here.

There is an area of disturbed weather off the eastern seaboard that at least deserves a glance right now. If it develops into anything I’ll let you know in the next few days.

The numbers as of 11:59 PM EDT last night

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine : Greenfield / Afton
Mon High: 91.0° @ 4:19 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation : Devil’s Knob
Mon High: 80.4° @ 1:50 PM
0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Wintergreen Winery @ the foot of Wintergreen Mountain in Beech Grove
Mon High: 91.0° @ 4:00 PM

*NCL-Tiger Fuel – Lovingston

0.00″ of rain

*NCL-Mini Tara Vineyards : Arrington

High pressure controls our weather today keeping skies clear and sunny.

The National Forecast Map shows a cold front getting near Nelson today as well. It may briefly move through before stalling, then moving back north as a warm front.

Pegasus circles to land at accident scene Sunday in Montebello.

First let me say a big thank you to Paulette and Lee Albright for being our eyes and ears out in Montebello. They got some really nice pics for us this year the the 11th Annual Montebello Community Market Day. The extravaganza included a demonstration by Montebello Fire & Rescue, but this past Sunday it turned into the real thing when a wreck at Route 56 and the Fish Hatchery Road occurred. There was was a motorcycle accident about 1 hour after the market started. 2 people were transported by ambulance and one required a helicopter. In the photo above, Paulette snapped the shot just before they touched down. Monday evening she e-mailed to tell us all of the victims thankfully have been treated and released. Thanks to the Montebello Fire & Rescue for a great response!

In spite of the wreck earlier, it turned out to be a great market Day with plenty to see.

Thanks again to Paulette for sending these our way!

Labor Day weekend signals many things, but it always means the annual Romp, Stomp, & Chomp event at Wintergreen Winery at the foot of Wintergreen Mountain. The weather was perfect,” says Tam Stone. She and husband Jeff have owned the winery for years just off of 664 headed up the mountain. “This is a chance for kids and adults to come out and have a great time, but don’t worry we don’t make wine with what’s stomped,” laughs Jeff.

If youare, a Phillips, a Rittenhouse, Bryant, Turner, Wood, or even a D’Ambola (no not the Piney River D’Ambolas, or the ones at Schuyler, just kidding) then you were probably at their annual family reunion at the RVFD Sunday. We are no relation, none that we know of, but several folks insisted we had to see this annual event. We agree! We hear these names everyday, but never had the opportunity to meet many of them until this past weekend. Very neat.

Above, Lousie Phillips Wade center, explains the family tree to Yvette on the left. On the far right is Dennis Phillips, son of Zack Phillips. Mrs Wade is the mother of Linda D’Ambola, yes that D’Ambola of Afton!

Phil Pie
Phil D’Ambola, husband of Linda D’Ambola, see above to connect the dots…just can’t seem to get away from the kitchen! Here he slices up a pie for the crowd.

Lina’s mother
Yes, that would be Mrs. Hazel Phillips, Lyna Watson’s mother. The Lyna Watson of Wintergreen hardware. Confused yet? Good thing they all had name tags on!
