Grape Harvest At Delfosse
Faber, Virginia

Grape Harvest @ Delfosse
Above, the grapes are ripe for the picking at Delfosse Vineyard & Winery.

Monday started off as a beautiful day across Central Virginia. It was such a nice morning they were out picking the grapes at Delfosse Vineyard & Winery in Faber. In the picture above the Sauvignon Blanc is being harvested. Later today after being refrigerated all night the grapes will be pressed. Then it’s on for the rest of processing that will eventually end up as wine down the road! Cheers!

After some sunshine early in the day Monday we ended up with showers across much of the northern end of Nelson. We’ll have more rain today, especially early as a front moves through. Sunny skies returning midweek. A stronger but mainly dry front moves through by week’s end bringing in some much cooler air. By late in the weekend we will see afternoon highs in the low 70’s and overnight lows in the upper 40’s by next Monday morning.

Still watching a couple of other areas of interest below. There are two disturbances I’m watching for possible tropical storm development. Again too soon to know what they will do, but we’re keeping an eye on them and will you update accordingly throughout the week. The old storm #92 dissipated during the last 24 hours.
You can see #90 might head out of the gulf in our general direction by week’s end, the other toward the east coast perhaps. Just have to keep an eye on them.

The two areas of a low pressure (Invest 90 & 91) disturbances. 90 in the gulf and 91 out in the Atlantic.

Veritas Starry Nights Finale for the 2007 Season
Afton, Virginia

Starry-Nights Finale
Above, the final Starry Nights bonfire of the season at Veritas Vineyard & Winery. This weekend signaled the end of the popular summer event.

What a great weekend across Nelson County and Central Virginia. Saturday night Veritas had its final Starry Nights for the 2007 season, it was a great evening with plenty of clear skies and pleasant temperatures. Not to worry Starry Nights 2008 will be back during the warm weather season next year!

Tropical Storm Gabrielle seen below is now on the way back out to sea. Unfortunately, it didn’t ever make it close enough to us to get any needed rainfall for the area. We do have a shot at some showers and thunderstorms over the coming week as a front makes it near the area later today and tonight before stalling out to our south and moving back north as a warm front. A secondary front pushes through the area later in the week giving us another chance for rain by Friday along with much cooler temps for daytime highs … we’re talking mid & upper 70’s.

Do want to bring your attention to a couple of other areas of interest below as well. There are two disturbances out in the Atlantic that I am watching for possible tropical storm development. Way, way too soon to know what they will do, but we’re keeping an eye on them and will you update accordingly throughout the week.

Tropical storm Gabrielle is headed out to sea and should not be a factor to as shown in the image below.

I will be watching this over the next 24 hours to see what’s going on with it. Right now most models don’t have it affecting Central Virginia. I’m not so sure just yet. We will certainly get some rain from fronts headed our way early next week, but it remains to be seen what this low will do.

More Saturday.

Updated: 9-7-07 08:40 AM EDT : Continuing to watch for tropical storm development of low out in the Atlantic. Next 24-36 hours critical as to whether this turns into a fairly strong tropical storm..perhaps even a CAT 1 hurricane. Still a tad too early to know for sure, but keep checking today and throughout weekend as data is updated.

Brewery Tanks Arrive
Piney River, Virginia

Steve Checking

As you know we’ve been following the progress of Nelson’s two microbreweries that are opening within the next year or so. We first told you about Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton that opens next month. And a few weeks ago we told you about Steve Crandall’s progress. In that story the tanks were just leaving Japan on their way to Nelson. Thursday they made it! Steve and his crew offloaded the tanks for storage. Eventually they will be part of his microbrewery in Glen Mary Village on 664 in Beech Grove. The project is scheduled for completion in 2008. Can’t wait for the taste!

Possible tracks of low pressure area in the Atlantic.

The far red track is a possible scenario around Sunday into Monday, but it’s still too early to know exactly if this will continue to hold together. It would be great if we could get some rain from this, but again I am not convinced we’ll get anything. I’ll have more on this over the weekend as it develops.

The National Forecast Map shows high pressure controlling our weather Friday into the first part of the weekend. By Saturday night the low pressure area I talked about above may begin to influence our weather with clouds spreading in from the east and southeast. By late Sunday night we may begin seeing showers developing and lingering into the middle part of next week as a couple of cold fronts take aim over the next several days. Again, this low pressure area may miss us all together. More info over the weekend.

151 Petition Drive Continues Saturday Morning
Nellysford, Virginia

Petition Sign
Above Deborah Harkrader takes information from Peter Agelasto to add his name to the petition being circulated to make improvements along Route 151. Agelasto also lives on Route 151 just south of Spruce Creek.

Over the past week a lot of activity has taken place regarding the August 30th wreck that killed a mother and her two daughters at the intersection of Route 151 and Greenfield Road. (Route 635) On Friday a committee met in Greenfield to organize an effort about getting much needed changes made along Routes 151 & 6 through the Rockfish Valley. Much has taken place and you will be reading about other ways you will be able to get involved in the effort to improve safety along Route 151. Over the coming weeks an official non profit organization is being formed with a governing board of directors. This organization will have the teeth needed to finally get something done about the unsafe situation along Route 151 and Route 6 to 29.

woman signing
Here another person adds their name to the petition at Deborah’s booth.

Everything is in the organizational phase, but this will be a tremendous opportunity for everyone living in and near Nelson to have a part in finally instituting changes along 151.

Be looking for more to follow in the coming weeks.

Let’s do something about 151

The 151 & 635 intersection where Laura, Iliana, and Elschen were killed last Thursday.

By Tommy Stafford
Nelson County Life Magazine
Greenfield, Virginia

I saw a man I’ve known for years lose it the other day. I sat with him Friday as he cried uncontrollably over the sudden death of Laura Cavedo and her daughters, Elschen and Iliana Strickler. Just days before the accident, she had closed on a new home. The kids were excited about picking paint colors for their new rooms. Mom was tickled over the notion she’d now have a dishwasher. It is Labor Day weekend and that house sits empty.

According to an initial report by Virginia State Police, Laura and her two girls were rear ended by a box truck traveling south on Rt. 151 while trying to turn left onto Greenfield Road. The impact pushed Laura’s car into the opposing lane where the vehicle was struck by an oncoming van. The girls died instantly. Their mother joined them about an hour later.

Three people killed, just like that. A mother and her two girls.

So we ask ourselves, why? Why them? Why now?

I think the reason why we Nelsonians feel so shaken by this accident, regardless of whether we knew the victims, is because we know one thing to be true: It could have been us.

Time and distance, both of which we know are related, influence perspective and perhaps perspective and objectivity are in short supply when it comes to this event. Mere minutes and yards separated myself and my wife from Laura’s fate. So yes, my views of the incident may seem distorted, myopic at best. Even so, I think most of us can agree that something must be done.

Once a peaceful country road, Rt. 151 has become a popular shortcut for tractor trailers traveling down I-64 headed to U.S. 29. They say the route shaves time. But at what cost?

151 was never designed to handle the traffic it does today. Locals have told us they have pleaded with VDOT and the county to regulate prohibited rigs along 151 but nothing ever happens. Why? For one, 151 as it exists today has VDOT’s blessing. According to the agency, the road meets all the requirements for long haul truck traffic and speeds are in accordance with this type of highway.

How insulting.

If 151 is an appropriate cut-through for long haul truck traffic moving at the current speeds then VDOT administrators are either severely out of touch, lack common sense, or both.

To be clear, the truck that slammed into Laura’s car was not a long haul truck. But imagine if it was.

I got a call Friday evening from Tim Spicer, the operations manager for Tiger Fuel in Lovingston. “Tommy, something must be done about this,” he told me with a tone so serious, it startled me at first. “This can’t stand any longer.”

Tim lives in Western Albemarle and travels 151 on his way to work in Lovginston each morning. Even though his company uses long haul trucks in its daily business, Tim knows that from a practical standpoint, semi trucks traveling through Nelson — those not making local deliveries — have no business being on Rt. 151. It’s a safety issue. It’s common sense.

We are not asking the state to enact an all-out ban on trucks on 151. Many of us here in Nelson make our living hauling gravel, produce, building materials and the like in and around the county. At a minimum, authorites should begin enforcing the existing laws put in place to make 151 a safe road to travel. Enforce the speed limit. Pull over and fine over length trucks. And let’s begin the discussion about putting in turn lanes at Greenfield Road and other dangerous intersections along the highway.

We are told that VDOT’s long-term plan is to widen 151. But that will only make 151 more trafficked and more accident-prone. Building a bigger highway would change Nelson County and it’s a bad idea.

The safety of 151 was a hot topic at Saturday morning’s RVCC pancake breakfast. A petition circulated at the Nelson Farmers’ Market by local potter Deborah Harkrader seeking a remedy to dangerous traffic patterns on 151 had generated at least 100 signatures by mid-morning, including ours. The good news is we’re talking. Our local authorities now need to listen and this is their chance to act.

Meanwhile, I have been in contact with network and cable news outlets I worked with in the past. What happened Thursday afternoon is news worthy not because “Trucks are Bad” or because 151 is a “Scary Rural Highway”. This is a story because deep inside, we all knew there would one day be a wreck like this on 151, one that would wipe out a family and finally make us mad enough to address the road’s dangerous traffic patterns.

We’ve lost a mother and her two girls for heaven’s sake.

Remembering Laura, Elschen and Iliana

Many of you have been asking us about details of a memorial service for Laura Cavedo and her two girls, the three victims of last week’s wreck at Rt. 151 and Greenfield Road.

Shannon Farm will be hosting an outdoor memorial service Saturday, September 8 at 1pm. There will be a tent, so the memorial service will be held rain or shine. There will also be some chairs for those with limited mobility and shuttle service from the parking area to the memorial site.

“Took these in the AM during my morning coffee stroll in Woods Mill……Fall is definitely on its way….
Judy”

We agree Judy! It’s hard to think we will be talking about frost in just a few short weeks, but it’s just around the corner.

Look for the sunny skies and warm temps to continue today right into the weekend. There’s a an area of disturbed weather out in the Atlantic right now that may strengthen & give us a decent shot at some rain by late in the weekend and the first of next week. There’s lots of speculation on which track the low could take right now. You can see the different models by clicking here. Some have it coming partially into Virginia, others skirting us but with very little effect. Essentially it’s too soon to tell, but we’ll have a better idea by Friday afternoon and evening as the low develops more.
