Cassidy @ Basic

Cassidy inside
Remember Cassidy? Oh come on you know her, she once was a face at D’Ambola’s Restaurant up in Afton. Earlier this year she moved away to Lynchburg. But, Cassidy decided she wanted to be back closer to Nelson. So we walk into Basic Necessities this past weekend and there she was! We’re glad to see Cassidy back in the area. Note to Basic…good get! Welcome back Cassidy!

It was a perfect weekend to be dining outdoors like the table above that Cassidy was waiting on. Oh, I almost forgot. Before moving on, check out the close up of Sarah Loken below. We didn’t realize it when we were taking the picture, but take a look at her friend!
Praying Mantis

Like I just mentioned, the weekend was about as perfect as you could get. Though we had some cold temperatures last night in the valley and Saturday night up in the mountains. NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob recorded a low around 38 degrees early Sunday morning. Overnight last night we had some cool temps again, but a thin layer of clouds that moved in helped to keep the temps up just a tad in many areas. Though we did make it into the upper 30’s here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield just before 7 AM. We even had some patchy frost.. Nothing widespread, but I did see several patches of frost in the pasture. Sunday was a pleasant but cool day with temps topping out near 70 in some locations while Wintergreen never made it out of the 50’s….. almost 60 but never quite made it.

Later this morning we’ll take a look and see if we had any surprise low readings overnight. Sunday night was the last chance for any frost or unusually low temps for the next several days. We will be warming up for the remainder of the week after today. Temperatures will be in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s Tuesday and beyond.

Still keeping an eye out there in the Atlantic on Tropical Depression Ingrid. It’s still holding on as a tropical depression, but not an impressive one. Wind shear, a condition that can limit development, is really working on Ingrid. It’s still not impossible for it to emerge as a storm or even hurricane over the long term, but the next 48 hours will determine that. It could fall completely apart during that time. If it survives then we’ll be taking a closer look.

The National Forecast Map shows high pressure in control today to the north giving us another cool fall like day. By Tuesday our winds switch a little more easterly giving us slightly warmer temperatures. Most of the week looks sunny at this time, though I see a chance for some clouds mid week east of the Blue Ridge if a moisture layer were to work in here from the Atlantic. Still a bit too soon to tell.

*AUDIO VERSION OF FORECAST RETURNS MONDAY MORNING*

Good Sunday to everyone. A quick update to the forecast for this Sunday.

The low this morning at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation upon Devil’s Knob at Wintergreen Mountain, made it to a cold 38.3° at 6:57 AM. We had talked about some upper 30’s in the forecast yesterday if the winds died out. Generally the winds went calm Saturday night, but there was a tiny breeze on the mountains overnight keeping the low temps in the upper 30’s vs mid 30’s. Tonight we could see some patchy frost on the mountains in particular, but again if winds subside, I think they will, then we could see some isolated patchy frost in the valley as well.

A warm up is on the way next week. I’ll have the details in Monday morning’s weather and audio cast.

Today’s Forecast Map {image updates daily at 5 AM EDT}

The National Forecast Map shows Canadian high pressure continues behind the cold front that brought us rain Friday and Friday night. Look for clear skies today with temps in the upper 30’s to near around 40 tonight. There is a chance we could even see isolated pockets of 30’s in the valley for some locations over the weekend. It all depends on whether the winds totally subside again Sunday nights

There is no real chance for rain in the extended forecast at this time.

We continue to monitor Tropical Storm Ingrid. It’s gained some winds to near 50-60 MPH at times, but a lot of factors are working against this for now. Winds as of Sunday were back down to the 35 MPH range. Wind shear is keeping this one from developing into much lately. By Tue or Wed of next week if Ingrid holds together, then we’ll need to begin watching more closely as it would then have a chance of significant development and possibly affecting the east coast.
Projected 5 day path

VALLEY & MOUNTAIN LOCAL FORECAST
Sunday Continued sunny and cool.
*Highs valley near 70°
*On the mountains around 55-60°
Winds: NE 5-7 MPH becoming east late in the day
*Sunday night: Mostly clear & chilly valley – cold mountains with patchy frost above. Lows generally low 40’s valley – around upper 30’s mountains.
Winds: Near Calm

The first part of next week on Monday looks, sunny and mild with a high around 75° valley and near 70° mountains.

Whenever or wherever severe weather or news breaks out, we’ll have the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.

Have a great Weekend!

We had the person who found Ms. Hamlett’s accident e-mail us this morning he says:

Subject: Sally Hamlett
Date: September 16, 2007 8:56:49 AM EDT
They wrote:
I was the second person to arrive on the scene and made the 911 call. It
appeared that she drove off the road without applying her brakes.”

The person went on to say that he didn’t notice any blood at the scene and noted the position of the body.

NelsonCountyLife.com can report the accident scene on Route 6 near 151 was a fatality. According to, Trooper Hunter Birckhead of the Virginia State Police, a car was noticed down an embankment near the intersection this morning. Trooper Birckhead says 52 year old, Sally Rogers Hamlett, of the Faber Nellysford area near Martin’s Store was killed in the accident that apparently occurred sometime around midnight Friday night, but was not discovered until Saturday morning when someone saw a reflection off of the car down an embankment.

“A resident living nearby said they heard a screeching sound of tires around midnight. When they looked out they didn’t see anything. That was because the light on the car had all been knocked out when the car hit a tree after leaving the road,” says Birckhead. Birckhead went on to say that the person who heard the screeching assumed the driver of the car either swerved or braked to miss something, then kept on driving since they couldn’t see anything after the screeching sound.

The Virginia State Police continue their investigation into the exact cause of the wreck.

Earlier Post from Saturday morning:
Just before 10:30am, area crews responded to an accident on the northbound side of Rt. 6, just south of Rt. 151 at Martin’s Store, slowing down north and southbound traffic on Rt. 6. No word if any other vehicles were involved. We’ll have more info as details become available …

Today’s Forecast Map

The National Forecast Map shows high pressure to our north losing its grip and moving out into the Atlantic Friday. An approaching cold front along with leftover moisture from Tropical Storm Humberto what was Humberto, now just an area of disturbed weather and rain, will combine to give us rain Friday into Friday night. Showers may hang around for the first part of Saturday before clearing for the weekend.

Before we get tear off into the thick of it today want to say thank you to Chuck Strauss. He sent us the nice comment below in e-mail last night saying:

Hey Greg, I need to watch out, she’s a whole lot better looking & sounding than I am. Before long folks will be wanting her on all the time!

Thursday was another really nice day across most of Virginia. We did see some clouds streaming in from time to time in advance of an approaching system, but all in all the day was a nice one. By dark thicker clouds worked their way in. Friday expect mostly cloudy skies with showers and perhaps a thunderstorm developing in the afternoon. Showers will continue into Friday night and linger a bit Saturday morning before clearing out for the weekend. Then … look for nice fall like temperatures. By the way, fall is not far off, officially beginning on September 23rd.

We continue to monitor Tropical depression #8 now Tropical Storm Ingrid as of Thursday night, way out in the Atlantic. As of Thursday night there wasn’t much was some minor increasing change in the strength, however it still has the potential to form into a tropical storm within the next 24-48 hours Has formed into a tropical storm. Beyond that we’ll have to see. #8 Ingrid may encounter some conditions that tend to tear it down around days 3-4 …if it makes it past that without falling apart, then we may see it emerge as a hurricane. As I always say, it’s a prediction. We saw what Humberto just did in Texas, so never say never with these things.
Projected 5 day path

Speaking of Tropical Storm Humberto, he briefly became a hurricane before becoming a tropical storm once again, and now nothing more than an area of rain across the Southeast US. He continues to spread heavy, heavy rain along the gulf statesin the southeast. Though we won’t have absolute direct effects from former Humberto, some of the moisture being pulled up will make it here and combine with that approaching cold front.

Nelson County: Deer Hemorrhagic Disease Likely Source of Die-Offs

0

REFRESH Nelson County Life Magazine HERE for the latest updates:

deer pic

Richmond, VA — The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) has confirmed that the cause of death of a deer in Cumberland County was Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease. Hemorrhagic Disease (HD) is a common viral infectious disease of white-tailed deer, and outbreaks occur annually in the Southeast. Since late July, VDGIF wildlife biologists and conservation police officers have investigated reports of suspected outbreaks from Allegheny, Shenandoah, Nelson, Essex, Bedford, Scott and Hanover Counties. Currently, other states across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic are experiencing HD outbreaks.

HD typically occurs in late summer and early fall. The disease poses no threat to humans or domestic pets such as dogs and cats. Biting flies, commonly known as biting gnats, transmit the viral disease. Hemorrhagic Disease cannot be spread by direct contact between infected animals. Deer that contract the disease often die rapidly. The number of deer affected by the current outbreak is variable. While it is not possible to determine the number of deer affected by the current outbreaks, some decrease in deer numbers in the affected areas of the Commonwealth may be expected.

Not all deer that contract the disease will die. Surviving deer may be emaciated or appear lame due to hoof damage. High fever due to the virus may cause deer hooves to crack, peel, or even slough off. As always, hunters should not consume deer that were obviously sick when killed.

There is no vaccine or medication to combat this deer disease. HD outbreaks will continue to occur until frost slows down the insects that carry the virus. The best defense is to maintain healthy deer herds at a population size that is suitable for the habitat.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
is continuing to monitor the situation and will continue to provide technical assistance to affected landowners. Additional information about Hemorrhagic Disease can be found on the Department’s Web site:
www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildlife/diseases/hd.asp

Members of the public who observe sick or dead deer in their area and suspect HD may be the cause, should report it to a wildlife biologist at one of the following Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries regional offices: Charles City (804-829-6580); Forest (434-525-7522); Fredericksburg (540-899-4169); Marion (276-783-4860); or Verona (540-248-9360).

It is the mission of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to maintain optimum populations of all species to serve the needs of the Commonwealth; to provide opportunity for all to enjoy wildlife, inland fish, boating and related outdoor recreation; and to promote safety for persons and property in connection with these outdoor activities. For more information, visit the Department web site at www.dgif.virginia.gov.

Updated 8:30 AM EDT : Tropical storm Humberto has briefly become a hurricane for the past several hours. So much for those fancy weather computers, and they want to tell us what’s going to happen in 20 years? Anyway, it will dump lots of rain along the coast and inland as far as north Mississippi. Models then have it hooking east with no threat to VA thus far.

Horse Ride in Afton
Afton, Virginia

Afton horses

Wednesday certainly felt like fall for part of the day! Mild temperatures and low humidities made it really nice. A great afternoon to get out and take a ride on your horse, like these two above did in Afton. Last night was fall feeling as well with many 50’s overnight and even some upper 40’s in the outlying areas. Today will be another nice day before a cold front brings in a chance for showers Friday and Friday night. By the weekend we should clear out with mild cool weather for the weekend.

A couple of things to keep an eye on tropical depression / storm wise over the next several days. First, Tropical Storm Humberto is working from the gulf into Texas and Louisiana. Right now it’s no threat to us, but as you can see from the 5 day track it has general predictions to head east. I am not very concerned about this one, but if conditions were just right it could be kicked in our direction. It’s a long shot, but we’ll keep any eye out.
Projected 5 day path

I am a bit more interested right now in what’s become Tropical Depression #8 out in the Atlantic. We’ve been watching this low pressure area over the past several days and now it’s formed into a depression. It could actually reach hurricane strength in the next 3-4 days, though many factors have to come together for that to happen. I do think it will be a tropical storm today or tonight. Long range some other things have to come into play for it to form into a hurricane with any longevity. – I’ll keep you posted.

Morning Spider webs

A big thank you to Judy Serkes over at Woods Mill again. She sent us this really neat photo above of the spider webs in the morning. Kind of neat!

Those spider web caught a little rain Tuesday as it was pretty much a dreary day across Nelson County and most of Virginia. It was mild and we did begin to see some clearing by late in the evening but the clouds hung in there for most of the day. No particular area got a lot of rain, but a few areas in northern and eastern Nelson got over a half inch in the past 24 hours.

Today will be a nice one with clearing skies, lower temps, and less humidity. Cooler high pressure from the north will control our weather for the next couple of days before a reinforcing cold front moves through around Friday. After that front makes it through, the weekend looks sunny and mild with pleasant temperatures.

Still watching one area of interest below – #91- for possible tropical storm development. Again too soon to know what will happen, but we’re keeping an eye on it. It could affect the east coast of the U.S. within a week to 10 days if it holds together. Again, I have no faith in the long range predictions and you simply can’t know what it will do, but it’s held together now for several days, so we’ll see where it goes.

Invest #91 out in the Atlantic

One interesting fact I was reading by Dr. Jeff Masters on Weather Underground is that Sept 10th marks the peak of hurricane season. From here on they generally decline, however, there’s several weeks to go as it takes a long time for the seas to cool down from all of the summer heating. We can still see a humdinger of a hurricane over the next few weeks.
