Today’s Forecast Map

Monday was wonderful day across Nelson County. For the second full day of fall the air was drier and temperatures, though still warm, lower humidities made it feel really nice especially with a light northerly breeze from time to time. Today expect warmer temps as we lose that northerly influence for more of a southerly wind. The humidity will be on the increase today as well.

I continue to watch numerous areas of disturbed weather out in the Atlantic. There is no immediate threat right now to the U.S. Eastern Coast, but I will be monitoring these closely over the coming week. One or two of them have the potential to develop into a tropical storm soon. Once they become more organized I’ll start posting more. If you’re more interested you can see a summary of them by clicking here.

What a perfect weekend across Nelson County and much of Central Virginia. Above our, Christina Kline, caught a beautiful shot up top at Wintergreen of the annual Oktoberfest. Fall officially arrived yesterday but it didn’t feel much like fall. Temps were around the 90° mark both Saturday & Sunday. Slightly drier air is working its way in after a weak frontal passage over the weekend. Monday will be milder, but we again are near the 90 degree mark on Tuesday and Wednesday. Cooler temps arrive late this week into next weekend.

There are several areas of disturbed weather out in the Atlantic that bear watching. Right now there’s no threat to the U.S. East Coast, but I will be watching these over the coming week. Hokies vs. Hoos Blood Drive
Wednesday, October 10 & Thursday, October 11
1 – 7 p.m. Daily

Bethlehem United Methodist Church
7539 Patrick Henry Hwy.
Roseland, Virginia

A competition will take place between Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia in an effort to stir interest in the Blood Drive. By all means, we encourage everyone to come out and give blood regardless of your favorite team.

Which is most important to win — a football game on November 24 in Charlottesville, Virginia,
with VA Tech vs. UVA or the competition for blood donors? The answer is obvious – so give a pint of blood while representing your favorite school and win! Do the Right Thing – Donate Blood.

If you have ever known someone who has been diagnosed with cancer, it can be devastating to everyone who is close to them. Personally for me, Bob Greer, this past year a great friend, a VA Tech Hokie, and a fellow Rotarian in Nelson County, Larry Van de Visser, passed away after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer. You can help patients battling cancer, as well as countless others in need, by making a blood donation. You can honor the life of Larry Van de Visser by being a donor.

For me, John Parr, as a teenager in the 50’s, my mother was Chairman of the Red Cross Blood-mobiles held at the Piney River Fire House. Our goals at that time were 125-150 units and most of the time we met them. I do remember one time we were so close to reaching our goal; we stopped traffic and asked people to come in and donate. I still have that drive to reach those same numbers and often wonder, “Why can’t we reach those goals today?” Thus, the idea of a Hokies vs. Hoos competition was realized.

Also, when our first grandchild was born, our daughter needed blood transfusions and once again I was reminded of the critical need for blood donations that many times come up unexpectedly. So, forget which football team you pull for….come donate blood and we all WIN!

The blood drive is sponsored by Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Roseland in partnership with the American Red Cross. This effort is being organized by a committee of five. Lining up for the UVA Team are Randy Powell, David Parr and Bob Greer. Tom Saunders and John Parr (Chairman) will represent the Hokies.

Refreshments will be served – home-baked cookies by the UMC women! Give a pint of blood to sustain life to qualify for a drawing for VA Tech and UVA identified items. The grand prize will be two tickets to the Hokies and Hoos football game on November 24. A drawing will be held at 7 p.m. at the conclusion of the blood drive on Thursday, October 11, 2007.

So come out, give, and win!

Above are a couple of photos that Ann Strober of the Nellysford area sent to us. We’ve been telling you about Ann for the past month or so. For years she been an avid photographer, but just recently switched to digital photography in the past couple of months.

“My first 35mm was the Kodak Signet 35. I gave my father the money I had earned doing babysitting and told him to get me a 35mm camera. It was a great starter camera. This was in 1956, I was in the 9th grade. I still have that camera. It no longer works, but I have a strong nostalgic connection to it. I knew from my very first camera, a Brownie Hawkeye, that taking pictures was something that was a passion for me. In my generation, girls were encouraged to become teachers, nurses or librarians. No one ever suggested that being a photographer was a career choice. So I became a teacher and taught science for 30 years. It was a great life for me. And now that I am retired, I can return to my first love. My new camera (thanks to the recommendation of Tommy and Yvette) is the Nikon D40X. I am on the path to learning all the ways the camera can be set up. Every day I am learning something new and being more comfortable with it. When I upload the pictures to my Mac and see the results, I feel joy and I want everyone to see them,” says Ann

We think she’s doing an excellent job with her new camera and appreciate Ann dropping us some of the fantastic photos she been taking! Click!

This entire week has been a very nice prelude to fall which officially arrives this Sunday the 23rd. For those of us who love summer like I do, it’s time to wave so long to our friend until next year. Lots of winter days between here and there! But lots of really nice fall days ahead as well. Many mornings have started cloudy and foggy this past week. The weekend looks dry with temps in the mid 80’s Saturday rising to the upper 80’s by Sunday in the valley, mountains a bit cooler. Rain enters the extended forecast period by Tuesday of next week.

One area disturbed weather tropical depression Ten to hit on in the gulf that’s been spreading moisture and rains into Florida and as far north as South Carolina. Even far southern VA saw some rain Thursday. You can see from the computer tracks where it might head as it comes inland as low pressure area. No biggie but a change in the path could affect weather anywhere in the SE. We’ll keep you posted if it becomes a real factor.
Possible tracks of the low pressure area

The National Forecast Map shows high pressure weakened and moving east allowing more humid air to move into the area as a result of a southerly flow. A high pressure area still controls weather over the weekend. A weak front moves through Saturday, but no rain is expected from that. Chances for rain creep into the forecast by late Tuesday into Wednesday.
Today’s Forecast Map

*Saturday night: Mostly clear and pleasant – Lows around 63° valley & 60° mountains.

Remembrance of Things Past, New Paintings by Christine Rooney

On Sunday September 30th, the Spruce Creek Gallery in Nellysford will
host an Opening Reception for local artist Christine Rooney from 3
until 5 pm.

Rooney uses a variety of mediums to create ethereal landscapes
including pastels, pencils. encaustics and oils. She applies these to
handmade papers and canvases to create what she like to refer to as
“visionary landscapes”.

She says, “My desire is to present landscapes where the viewers feel
they have been somewhere or sometime. Places that evoke reflection,
renewal, and peace. Trees, land and light become symbols of
individuality, physical space and spirituality. All my paintings are
of real places, mostly in Nelson County, but seen through ‘new eyes'”.

The Spruce Creek Gallery is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 am
until 5 pm and is located at 1368 Rockfish Valley Highway (Route 151)
one mile south of Nellsyford in Nelson County. The gallery features a
unique mix of fine art and distinctive craft by local and regional
artists.

Here’s a scene of just how beautiful the weather has been the past few days in Nelson County. Heidi Crandall out in Roseland sent this to us. She says this is David Dodd’s cows off of Jonesboro Road. What a spectacular day!

Wednesday will be pretty much a repeat, we’ll see some early morning fog and clouds eventually giving way to sunshine. A scene from this past weekend’s Farmers’ Market in Nellysford. Above Jim & Linda Staton along with Jim Davey provided music at the market. If you haven’t been out yet this year, make it a point to go next Saturday. It runs every Saturday morning through Mid-October.

Monday was another beautiful day across Nelson County. Though we started out chilly, you could even say cold, the heater finally got plugged in by noon and we reached the lower 70’s at locations in the valley. We had lunch on the deck at Stoney Creek Bar & Grill with DOC the famous radio sportscaster. It was absolutely gorgeous! With high pressure in charge of our weather what you saw on Monday is pretty much the rule for the remainder of the week. There is a chance for cloudiness to back in here from the east on Wednesday, but I don’t have much faith in that at the moment. Regardless, temperatures will be warming up starting today through the coming weekend.

Tropical Storm Ingrid that we’ve been talking about for the past week has finally weakened to the state it’s no longer considered a tropical cyclone. It’s still a disturbance, but not much more. If it reemerges over the coming days we’ll keep you posted.
