Nelson County, Virginia – Sunset

nelson sunset

Thanks again to Judy Serkes our resident photographer in the Woods Mill area that sent us the beautiful picture above. I think this is a sunset from that area. A hot one as she described it! Wednesday was another hot day with many 90’s across the area. Some areas even saw a little shower as daytime heating produced those garden variety afternoon & evening thunderstorms. But unfortunately most areas remained dry. Today our chances for rain increase and become better later in the afternoon into tonight. By Friday the cold front bringing us the chance for showers moves east and cooler high pressure builds in just in time for the weekend. I am not overly impressed with the possible rain amounts at this point. I can’t rule out some severe storms with this system especially if we get plenty of early morning sun, but there just doesn’t seem to be much punch to this one, but anything is certainly better than nothing! Be looking for temps in the 70’s by the weekend.

Still watching Tropical Storm Karen out in the Atlantic. She has managed to get some winds as high as 70 MPH from time to time, but is now encountering that nasty wind shear we talked about on Wednesday. Like I said then she’ll have to withstand some pretty intense wind shear before much else can happen. Several other areas of disturbed weather you can check out by clicking here. Again not a threat anytime soon, but we’ll be watching.

Possum wide

Possum close
Above top photo left, Sarah Leake, and Kay Pfaltz of Basic Necessities in Nellysford, show off one of their latest delicacies added to the menu. As most of you know, Kay has been gone for the past week in France. When she returned, she added South Carolina Potted Possum to the menu since it has been requested so much over the past year or so. (Okay just kidding!) Actually this was something we got about a week ago and gave to Kay. Don’t ask!

Tuesday was another day unlike Fall. Summer is still holding on and will again today. Our NCL-Weathernet station on Devil’s Knob at The Wintergreen Nature Foundation even made it to 86 degrees on Tuesday afternoon. But … changes are on the way within the next 48 hours. A cold front is working it’s way toward Virginia from the west bringing a roughly 50-50 chance for rain Thursday into Thursday night. If we don’t get it then, we probably won’t have another shot for several days unless something tropical pops up. By the weekend temperature will feel much more like Autumn versus Summer.

I continue to watch numerous areas of disturbed weather out in the Atlantic. There is no immediate threat right now to the U.S. Eastern Coast, but they can’t be totally written off either. Tropical Storm Karen continues to maintain strength, but conditions over the next several days look to squash her from becoming a hurricane. She’ll have to withstand some pretty intense wind shear later this week before much else can happen. Not impossible, but not likely either. Another area of disturbed weather way, way out in the Atlantic is wandering around as well. We’ll see what this one does too. Current images of the projected paths are below.

Friday, September 28: Blue Stone Sky takes the stage for their first
performance at Rapunzel’s. Blue Stone Sky sprang into being in September 2006. Julie
and Kevin Caran had been playing music here and there in Harrisonburg under
the name The Professors Caran, but had long imagined having a band with more
harmonies, more instrumentation, and more members. They began collaborating with
their friend Sarah Cheverton, a former member of the regionally celebrated
folk ensemble Windfall, and soon decided to stick together as blue stone sky.
The band member’s influences include James Taylor, Carole King, Barenaked
Ladies, Girlyman, The Ditty Bops, Adrienne Young, CSNY, Indigo Girls, Ani, and
pretty much anything in the folk rock genre.
The show starts at 8pm/no cover.

Saturday, September 29: Deja Moo and Front Street.
Deja Moo brings us a high-energy mix of folk, oldtime, and original music
they like to call “Deja Moosic.” Front Street brings us a sweet, harmonic
blend of folk and Americana covers and lovely originals. Together, these two
bands are sure to complement each other and create a wonderful evening. The
show starts at 8pm/$5.

Washington Nationals Star Ryan Zimmerman
Hosts 2nd Annual Golf Tournament At Wintergreen Resort
To Support Battle Against Multiple Sclerosis

WINTERGREEN, VA—Washington Nationals star third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is hosting his ziMS Foundation Golf Outing on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Wintergreen Resort, to promote awareness of Multiple Sclerosis, a disease his mother has battled since 1995.

“My family has given me the support to fulfill my dreams. I hope can make a real impact in the life of my family as well as many others afflicted by MS,” said Zimmerman, the former University of Virginia standout who leads the Nationals in home runs and RBI this season. Zimmerman currently serves as president of the ziMS Foundation, which he started to raise money and awareness for MS. His mother, Cheryl Zimmerman, is on the Board of Directors, as is his father, Keith Zimmerman.

The golf outing, co-hosted by ESPN 840 AM in Charlottesville, Va., features events on and off the course. Each player receives a gift bag from Callaway Golf and may participate in instructional sessions prior to play with the Wintergreen Golf Academy staff. A 9 a.m. shotgun starts the 18-hole tournament, which includes contests and prizes, with awards luncheon and silent auction following play at the Devils Knob Grill. Prizes include vacations to Wintergreen Resort and tickets to University of Virginia football games, as well as 2008 Washington Nationals games. Zimmerman will be on hand to welcome participants and support the event.

Registration is $75 per player or $299 per foursome. Entry forms are available online at www.thesportsaddictnetwork.com (840 AM Charlottesville link).

One of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier year-round golf destinations, Wintergreen Resort is located in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, where golf is played 12 months a year — even during ski season — and soothing luxury is readily available at the Wintergarden Spa.

Devils Knob, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2006, is a co-design by the father-son team of Ellis and Dan Maples. The highest course in Virginia, Devils Knob is an exquisite mountaintop layout at 3,850 feet elevation known for cool summer temperatures and outstanding tee-to-green conditions.

SALES TAX HOLIDAY ANNOUNCED FOR OCTOBER

Lovingston, VA —Central Virginia Electric Cooperative is pleased to announce an opportunity to save money, reduce energy consumption and help protect the environment by taking advantage of the ENERGY STAR Sales Tax Holiday from Friday, October 5 through Monday, October 8, 2007.

Governor Kaine signed legislation to create the sales tax holiday to encourage consumers to purchase energy efficient appliances, lighting and heating and cooling equipment.

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative is encouraging its members to choose ENERGY STAR qualified products during the sales tax holiday. The ENERGY STAR qualification means that these products meet strict energy efficiency criteria set by the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. For more information about ENERGY STAR, please visit www.energystar.gov

From October 5 to October 8, consumers can visit their local retailer and save both state and local sales tax on ENERGY STAR qualified products that cost $2500 or less. The following products are eligible:
q Ceiling Fans
o Use improved motors and blade designs that are about 50% more efficient than conventional models, saving you $15-$20 per year on utility bills.
q Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs)
o Use at least 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer, while saving $30 or more in energy costs over each bulb’s lifetime.
q Dehumidifiers
o Have more efficient refrigeration coils, compressors, and fans than conventional models, using 10-20% less energy to remove the same amount of moisture as a similarly-sized standard unit.
q Dishwashers
o Use at least 41% less energy than the federal minimum standard for energy consumption and use much less water than conventional models.
q Programmable Thermostats
o When installed and used properly, ENERGY STAR programmable thermostats can save up to $150 a year on your utility costs.
q Refrigerators
o Use high efficiency compressors, improved insulation, and more precise temperature and defrost mechanisms to improve energy efficiency.
q Room Air Conditioners
o Use at least 10 percent less energy than conventional models, saving at least $25 a year on your utility bills.

ENERGY STAR qualified products use 30% less energy than conventional models without sacrificing features, style or comfort. Some products, such as energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps, save as much as 80%. By replacing old, inefficient products with ENERGY STAR qualified models, Virginians can help protect the environment while saving money and energy.

Consumers can save even more money with the Federal Energy Tax Credits available for doors, windows and other energy efficient products. For more information on the federal tax credits visit www.energystar.gov/taxcredits.
