Raven's Roost looking SW
View from Raven’s Roost on The Blue Ridge Parkway looking southwest.

What a fantastic weekend! Look at that sky from the overlook at Raven’s Roost on the BRP! You could see for miles and miles with no visibility restrictions at all! It’s a sure sign that fall is on the way when you start losing that haze layer generally associated with summer. Also be sure to check lots of the events we covered this past weekend by looking and clicking under Recent Posts to your left.

Before I get way off into the forecast, I want to throw out a Nelson County Life “hello” to Bruce and Debbie Flight in Richmond. They own a place in Stoney Creek, and are here most weekends. They are regular visitors to the weather post each morning, but only recently began listening to the audio version so they can keep up with what’s going on back here in Nelson while away! Howdy! to Bruce and Deb. And one final hello to what must be our most distant listener. John, I wish I knew your last name, but I do know you live in New Zealand. John too has a place here in Nelson at Wintergreen, but calls New Zealand home. Last week he was telling Yvette how much he enjoyed being able to listen to the audiocast over there so he can keep up with the weather here as well! Again I think I am safe in saying John, you are our most distant listener! Thanks to you and the Flights for dropping by each day! Wasn’t it Minnie Pearl that said, “How Dee?” Think that was her, I really ought to know that being from Tennessee and all.

The weather’s been great, but dry. Fire dangers I noticed up on the BRP are posted as extreme and many lake and rivers are very, very low. Wish I had better news folks, but this is going to be a dry week. Next weekend promises a chance for some rain, but nothing impressive at least looking this far out. Here at NCL-Greenfield we ended the month of September with only 0.59″ of rain in the bucket for the month. Some locations in Nelson have received a couple of inches, but that’s not much when it’s been as dry as it is. Our high temp for the month of September was 96° on the 7th. Our lowest temp for last month was 39° on the 17th.

Above at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation their high for September was 86° on the 8th and the 25th. The low of 38° occurred on the 25th. For the month they racked up 1.14″ of rain in the bucket. You can get all of the detailed monthly data by clicking on the links below next to the reporting NCL-Weathernet stations. Once there just click on the tabs for month, previous month, etc for lots of neat weather data!

There’s some generalized tropical activity out in the Atlantic and some areas of disturbed weather not too awfully far off the east coast. Right now, that’s about all they are, but we could only hope that a depression might throw some rain our way by week’s end. Right now nothing in play. Tropical Storm Melissa we talked about over the weekend will probably fall victim to wind shear just like Karen did, but that remains to be seen. TS Karen actually still is a low pressure area out there, but nothing more. I’ll be watching and keep you informed on what takes place this week. You can get an overview by clicking here on all of the tropical activity.

Tyro man breaks state pumpkin record!

William Layton’s Last Chance Pumpkin

Linus, your Great Pumpkin was grown in Nelson County.

William Layton of Tyro, the subject of our October 2007 cover story, broke the state record this weekend for the biggest pumpkin grown. At the Virginia State Fair in Richmond, “Last Chance” (shown above in the patch, prior to cutting) weighed in at 1138 pounds, breaking the old record by more than 200 pounds. The pumpkin on this month’s cover, Baby Huey, took home second place at 824 pounds. Media coverage here, here and here.

Congratulations William!

Farewell Randolph’s Grocery

Randolph’s wide

sign close
A closer view of their farewell message in mid September 2007.

We first told you about Mr. Russell Randolph in our April 2006 NCL. Back then, in spite of some rather tough health issues just the year before, Mr. Randolph continued to operate his store just as always since 1981. He had worked at the old store since 1954, back when he was just 16 years old. I always loved stopping at Mr. Randolph’s store on my way out of Shipman going to Schuyler delivering the magazine each month. There’s not much out there on the trip between James River Road and where you turn toward Schuyler. Mr. Randolph’s store was always a nice place to stop and take a break from a day’s driving around the county. He always smiled, never complained, and was always happy to see us come by with the new issue. I didn’t know Mr. Randolph for very long, just a couple of years.

When I was making the route last week, I was saddened to see the sign in the photos above on the old wooden door as you enter the store. On September 15th Mr. & Mrs. Randolph finally called it quits. What a long road they have traveled. They deserve a rest! But I will miss seeing Mr. Randolph as I make my way through the intersection at Glade Road toward Schuyler.

RR-Outside
Mr. Randolph poses for a picture in March 2006. He appeared in our April 2006 edition, page 28.

Though I won’t be stopping for a soda there anymore along the way, I will always have fond memories of my times there.

Best of luck to you both Mr. & Mrs. Randolph! We will miss you!

Cash Barrell
One of the volunteers at this past weekend’s event places a donation in the barrel at the beginning of the day. The goal for the event was $5000.00.

The weather cooperated and Saturday was the day in downtown Lovingston. The Lovingston Opry sponsored the 1st annual Food for the Holidays Block Party to raise money for the Nelson Pantry. Trish Becker of the Opry said she was disappointed that more folks wern’t able to have a turkey during the holidays, so she decided to have the event that included all types of fun and entertainment.

A hint of Fall on Devil’s Knob
At The Wintergreen Nature Foundation
Wintergreen, Virginia

Fall Leaves
The big story for the weekend is the return of more fall like conditions especially in the mountains. Though valley temps will be in the mid 70’s in some spots, overnight lows will certainly feel like fall for everyone. Unfortunately the prospects for rain over the next several days is about zero. But at least the temperatures are much more pleasant making for a nice weekend!

Another Tropical Storm Melissa is gaining interest out in the Atlantic. More in Monday’s weathercast
