Apple Butter Festival
Tyro, Virginia

Apple-Pumpkin

Apple Butter -1
Above top, one of the hundreds of pumpkins sold this past weekend at the annual Flippin-Seaman Apple Butter Festival in Tyro is weighed in. We thought since, William Layton, of Tyro holds the state record for the biggest pumpkin, it was only appropriate to get ours there this year! Say you missed the Apple Butter Festival this past weekend? Not to worry, they’ll hold it again later this month on October 20th.

The hot and humid weather continued on Monday as a large area of high pressure holds on controlling our weather. There is huge relief on the way, but not today. It will be another hot one with temperatures again in the lower 90’s across the area. By tonight we begin to see the start of a change in our weather patterns for the next several days. We have slight chances for a scattered storm this afternoon, with better chances by week’s end. The big story is much cooler temps by Thursday & Friday. Daytime highs below in the valley will be in the low and mid 60’s! Above in the upper 50’s.

Mountain Side Petting Farm
Afton, Virginia

Funky-petting
Above, a youngster pets one of the many animals at the grand opening of the Mountain Side Petting Farm this past weekend, in Afton just off Blundell Hollow Road.

So far the Columbus Day weekend has been nice, but hot! It was a perfect time for many events over the holiday that continues through today. Just one of the many things happening was the grand opening of the Mountain Side Petting Farm in Afton. They had a great day to open on Saturday with all kinds of animals out there. Drop in to see Barbara and the rest of the gang there. Great place to take kids! See page 17 upper right in the current October issue of NCL for another fun Halloween event taking place there on October 27th!

Boy it has been hot and dry. Everyone was around the 90 degree mark yesterday even in the mid 80’s on the mountains. We are getting in serious need of not just a little rain, but a lot. In the photo below you can see what Lake Monocan looks like in Nellysford at Stoney Creek. You can see a lot of the bottom of the lake – and it is very, very low where there is water. I was told Sunday that it has gotten this way before and a nice rain in the fall can remedy it quickly, but the situation is getting critical.

Monocan-1
View of Lake Monocan looking west from the dock.

Unfortunately there’s not much promise of rain in the forecast, at least nothing significant. Mid week we’ll begin a sharp cool down, but substantial rain chances aren’t there. On Sunday a few areas on the west side of the BRP saw some showers, but again just about everyone remained dry and very hot for the start of October.

And for those of you keeping score at home, The numbers as of 11:59 PM EDT last night

Changing the light bulbs
Nellysford, Virginia

kay forklift-a
So how do you change a light bulb way up there? With a forklift of course! Kay Pfaltz upon her pedestal changes out the lights in front of Basic Necessities. Brian Kidd of Wintergreen Hardware drives the forklift, I mean mobile pedestal to help out. Amy Chiilds of Taylor’s Creek was sitting in Basic when she saw Kay out front rising above, she sent this pic to us! Thanks Amy!

Well, Wednesday was another perfect day to be out changing the outdoor lights. It even got hot in some parts of Central Virginia as warm high pressure controls our weather. Though we had some morning clouds and light drizzle, that quickly gave way to mostly sunny skies and very warm, in truth, hot, temperatures. Thursday and much of the extended period looks very similar with warm conditions and unfortunately, very minimal chances for rain.

Also I want to mention that yes, yours truly, will be the emcee for The Wintergreen Nature Foundation’s annual golf tournament tomorrow over at Stoney Creek Golf Course. This ought to be a real interesting day since I still don’t really know how to play golf yet! Not to worry I am just riding around in the golf cart and talking! Seriously, it’s a great cause with a nice silent auction, and a great day of golf. The guys at TWNF do great work on preservation here in Nelson and this is a big benefit for them. See you there!

Newest NCL-Weathernet Station @ Hatcreek Farm
Roseland, Virginia

Hatcreek-NCL Station
Above Heidi Crandall of Roseland shows off the latest station added to the NCL-Weathernet family. The install was completed on Tuesday afternoon. Heidi is great about sending us some fantastic pictures from time to time in her neck of the woods as well!

What a gorgeous day Tuesday turned out to be. After morning clouds, even some drizzle early, the afternoon ended up perfect. Great weather to finish up the installation of our newest addition to the NLC-Weathernet family. Tuesday afternoon we installed the NCL-Hatcreek Farm station on Horseshoe Mountain in Roseland. Steve and Heidi Crandall were nice enough to provide a location so we can now monitor weather on the other side of Brent’s Mountain. A big plus! As with any of the NCL Weathernet stations, you can get to it by clicking on the drop down menu on the upper left hand side of this web page. We’ll be working out any minor kinks on this station as it goes live over the next few days. They can be a little cranky on the front end! Thanks again to Steve and Heidi for filling in a big gap in that direction!

Now with a new station on the air, it would be wonderful if we could try out that new rain gauge with about 5 or more inches of rain over several days. unfortunately, that isn’t in the cards for the near future. The good thing though, October is generally a month of changing weather patterns and we usually end up with more rainy days later in the month as we transition from warmer to cooler weather especially entering November. But that’s a bit down the road.

Overnight Tuesday we had some drizzle just like the night before, but not anything to really do us any good. Over the extended forecast period, not much out there to provide relief precipitation wise, and temperatures will warm slightly as we go through the week headed toward the weekend. I do see a tiny window for showers Thursday into Friday, but right now only 20%. If conditions change slightly we could have better chances. Keep you posted.

Afton: Fatal Wreck Tuesday Night : Route 151 @ Tanbark near Afton Service Center

REFRESH Nelson County Life Magazine HERE for the latest updates:

Updated 12:37 PM EDT 10-3-07
By Tommy Stafford

NCL has obtained additional information about Tuesday night’s accident on Route 151 near Tanbark Road. An initial eyewitness told NCL she saw a tractor trailer go through the accident scene as she was pulling up. As we stated in our earlier reporting we did not notice any large truck on the scene during our time there and had no verification as to whether it had any part in the wreck. Tommy Harvey of the Rockfish Valley Fire Department and owner of Afton Service Center, told NCL this afternoon that video surveillance cameras at his business caught the accident on tape as it happened. Mr. Harvey tells NCL that a truck was not involved in the accident, though one could be seen passing through the accident scene shortly after it happened. “It did not contribute to or was it involved in the accident,” says Harvey. As stated earlier below by VA State Police Sgt. David Cooper, the cause of the accident appears to be from the car being driven by 65 year old Lloyd Puckett swerving into the path of Ms. Gertrude Johnson of Nellysford.

Updated 10:15 AM EDT 10-3-07
By Tommy Stafford

NCL has learned that 54 year old Gertrude Ann Johnson of Nellysford was killed last night in the accident we have been reporting. According to Sgt. David Cooper with the VA State Police in Appomattox, Ms. Johnson was killed after a car being driven by 65 year old Lloyd Wayne Puckett of North Headwater, Virginia crossed the double yellow line heading northbound into her southbound lane near Tanbark Road. Sgt Cooper says another passenger in the car with Ms. Johnson, 63 year old Betty Sanford of Greenfield was injured as well and transported to UVa Medical Center. Her condition is unknown at this time. Mr. Puckett was injured as well and transported.

Sgt Cooper said the accident is still under investigation and charges will be forthcoming.

Updated 8:20 AM EDT 10-3-07

Nelson County Life Magazine has confirmed with Virginia State Police this morning that last night’s accident in Afton on 151 did involve the death of one of those involved. We do not know the name of the person killed at this point, but VSP did confirm it as another fatality. This makes five traffic deaths on either 151 or 6 in just the past month.

More updates later today.

Updated: 12:10 AM EDT 10-3-07 : Authorities have reopened Route 151 as of 12:10 AM – all traffic is flowing normally again.

Serious Accident @ Route 151 near Tanbark
Afton, Virginia

151 & tanbark-1
This is the scene just before 10PM on Route 151 near Tanbark in the vicinity of Afton Service Center. The entire road is blocked and NCL has learned this is most likely another fatal accident.

It appears that Route 151 through Nelson County has become deadly once again Tuesday night. Though still unofficially confirmed, NCL believes at least one fatality has occurred since the county medical examiner, Dr. Bob Raynor, was dispatched to the scene around the time NCL left on the way back to the office to file this report. A teenage eyewitness who had just left her evening job as a waitress at a nearby restaurant, said the wreck happened right in front of her as she was traveling northbound along Route 151. “I saw what looked like a large semi style truck going through the intersection as the accident happened. I was not sure if it hit the cars or if they were swerving to miss it,” says Jennie a waitress at D’Ambola’s Restaurant in Afton. We do not know Jennie’s last name as of this report. But did speak personally with her on the scene while she was stuck in traffic.

On the scene, NCL didn’t see a large truck, but the entire view on the north side of the accident was blocked from our view so we have no way of knowing if a truck has anything to do with this particular accident. We saw two cars involved when we arrived. One shown in the top photo above in the center of 151 and another car off the west shoulder of 151. Rockfish Fire & Rescue Crews were working at a very intense pace to try and free the victim or victims inside the crushed vehicle.

Accident reconstruction teams from VA State Police were called to the scene. This is an almost certain sign that a fatality has occurred, but again not verified as of this preliminary report late Tuesday night. Authorities are diverting all large trucks away from the area and keeping them on I-64, Route 250 and U.S. 29 until the scene has been cleared.
