Here, a very proud wife, Shelia, videos William as he speaks to the historical society group.

Weatherwise Monday was pretty much a non event. We started off chilly. The overnight low here at NCL-Greenfield Afton was in the upper 30’s. As the day wore on, temps warmed up nicely. A high thin overcast we talked about yesterday formed, but not enough to block any sun, just kind of put a veil on things. Today and tomorrow look about the same temperature wise with afternoon highs near 80 in the valley. We’ll continue to see high thin clouds again today, even cloudy skies at times in the afternoon as an upper level disturbance nears the area. Models still show chances for rain forming by the end of the week, but they have for the past two weeks only to fall apart as it nears the Blue Ridge. This is still 3-4 days out, so I’ll continue to watch and see.

Trip to the Pumpkin Patch
Drumheller’s Orchard
Lovingston, Virginia

trailer patch

What a fantastic weekend we had in Central Virginia and Nelson County. The days were pleasant and fall like, the nights cool. We saw some upper 30’s for overnight lows during the weekend. It was a perfect time to be out pumpkin picking! Lots of kids went to Drumheller’s Orchard last week and over the weekend to do just that. You can see more coverage here along with video! And sadly, it was the last weekend for the Nelson Farmers’ market in Nellysford (video here). This past Saturday wrapped up the market for 2007. Mmmmm, what to do with my Saturday morning’s now! Not to worry they will be back in 2008!

Though the weather is pleasant and it feels like Autumn, we are in severe need of rain. It’s becoming critical as noted by many of the water restriction signs you see up across the county. Ray Uttaro with Nelson Emergency Services issued this burn ban last week since conditions have become so dry. The National Weather Service mentions chances for rain by mid-week, I don’t personally give it much hope folks. Right now none of the three models I use to compare show much in the way of rain. But I will look this over more throughly later today. We need it and I’ll gladly be wrong on this any day if it means getting and rain.

This is what Fall is all about in Virginia. Out in the orchards, pumpkin patches and the corn field mazes! Doris Drumheller, of Drumheller’s Orchard, knows how to have a day of fun for kids, many who have never been on the farm. Friday she had youngsters from all over the area coming by to pick their very own pumpkins and apples, along with a tour of their orchard operation. If you haven’t been out there, make it a point to go!

Senator Webb Staff to Hold Satellite Office Hours
Friday, October 26, 2007

“Webb Sites” to Expand Constituent Services in Remote Locations

Earlier this year, Senator Jim Webb announced the creation of “Webb Sites,” satellite office-hour locations where Virginians will have the opportunity to speak with a representative of the Senator’s staff in their local communities.

A “Webb Site” will be held in 2 locations on Friday, October 26, 2007. These sessions are designed to assist constituents in Amherst and Nelson Counties and the surrounding communities with difficulties relating to Social Security and Medicare benefits, veterans’ benefits, legal immigration, federal student loans, military service, and other federally-related matters.

In addition to Senator Webb’s district offices around Virginia, the “Webb Sites” program offers additional face-to-face contact with staff representatives and aims to provide access to constituents traveling from long distances. These locations are targeted at constituents living in Nelson and Amherst Counties.

“Constituent service is deeply important to me and my staff,” said Senator Webb. “My new ‘Webb Sites’ program is designed to make my Senate office more accessible to the people of Virginia.”

Representatives from Senator Webb’s office will help constituents complete casework inquiry and privacy forms so that assistance can be properly conducted in keeping with federal law. Constituents are asked to bring copies of all pertinent information regarding their cases in order to facilitate a timely response. For citizens who wish to work on another person’s behalf, the constituent with the actual concern must provide written permission for such action.

Here are details for upcoming “Webb Sites”:

Fall colors

Finally, Fall returned to Nelson County over the past couple of days. Thursday was very pleasant, even chilly some of the time when the winds were whipping around. Hard to believe earlier this week we were talking about temperatures near 100 degrees in a few locations. Those days are long gone and this weekend’s weather focus will be much cooler temps. Sadly, no rain to speak of in that forecast. We’ve had a few systems develop to our west, only to fall apart before getting to our area. Overnight last night, temps were already in the upper 30’s before midnight in the mountains.

The upside, it will be a great weekend for this year’s Annual Garlic Festival in neighboring Amherst County at Rebec Vineyards. This is a big deal folks and if you’ve never been it’s worth checking out. Three of Nelson’s wineries will be there this year: Afton Mountain, Hill Top Berry, and Wintergreen Winery. Just talked to Jeff at Wintergreen on Thursday afternoon and he said they had finished up the season’s pressing of the grapes. A sure sign of cooler days are ahead!

And for those of you keeping score at home, The numbers as of 11:59 PM EDT last night

Rooney
Above artist, Christine Rooney, of Lynchburg poses near some of her artwork on display at Spruce Creek Gallery just south of Nellysford on 151. Her exhibit called, Remembrance of Things Past is is series of new paintings on display through October 28th. “My desire is to present landscapes where the viewers feel they have been somewhere or sometime. Places that evoke reflection, renewal, and peace. Trees, land and light become symbols of individuality, physical space and spirituality. All my paintings are of real places, mostly in Nelson County, but seen through ‘new eyes,” says Rooney.

Listen to Christine talk about her art on display and how she got her start as a youngster.

A closer look at some of Rooney’s beautiful work.

Well we can say “so long” to the really hot weather now. Tuesday should finish us up with that 90 degree business, barring any crazy hot spells in the coming weeks. NCL-Wintergreen Winery fell just short of the 100 degree mark on Tuesday by just 3 degrees. All of the other NCL-Weathernet stations, hit 90 or above as well, except obviously Devil’s Knob. We should be trending toward cooler days right on through the end of the year. The calendar sure says it. Normal highs for this time of the year should be in the low 70’s for daytime highs and upper 40’s for nighttime lows. We see some 80’s today, but after that 60’s will be the order for highs warming to the 70’s by late in the weekend. We did see a smattering of rain yesterday, mainly west of the BRP in the Shenandoah Valley, but most of Nelson once again missed any significant rainfall. Unfortunately, our previous chances for rain this coming weekend have lessened as well, with only slight chances for a shower. The extended outlook doesn’t show much either. That said, this time of year as we transition into fall, only slight changes in a weather pattern can make all of the difference. As you have heard me say in the past, extended outlooks are very inaccurate and I have little to no faith in them. So we’ll see what the trend is over the next 7 days as it unfolds.

Today’s Forecast Map

The National Forecast Map has a couple of cold fronts crossing the area. One overnight last night and a reinforcing one over the next 24 hours. Notably cooler high pressure builds in for the remainder of the week, certainly making it feel like Fall again … finally!

Local forecast
*Today Mostly sunny early, then partly sunny in the afternoon, cooler.
*High temps in Spruce Creek, Gladstone, & Rockfish Gap around 84°
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Montebello, Wintergreen, Devil’s Knob, and Love, Mostly sunny early then some passing clouds by afternoon.
Highs top out around 71°
Winds: NNW 5-10 MPH

*Tonight Partly cloudy & pleasant.
*Lows valley near 51°
*On the mountains overnight low near 45°
*Winds: NW 4-8 MPH

Thursday Partly sunny & cool.
*Highs valley 68°
*On the mountains much cooler with a high around 56°
Winds: NW 6-8 MPH
*Thursday night: Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy – Lows near 43° valley & 38° mountains.
Winds: W 5-10 MPH gusts to 15.

The remainder of the week Friday looks partly sunny & mainly dry. Daytime highs in the upper 60’s valley cooling to the mid 60’s by Saturday – on the mountains look for daytime highs in the upper 50’s Friday near 60 on Saturday – Overnight lows – low 40’s by week’s end in the valley – around 38° mountains, warming slightly by Sunday night. Again I can’t rule out a shower this weekend, but right now not promising.

Whenever or wherever severe weather or news breaks out, we’ll have the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.

Have a great Wednesday!
