Fall Colors in Nelson County, Virginia

Sellis

Finally you can see Fall taking hold across all of Central Virginia and Nelson. Thanks to Steve Ellis who sent us today’s weather picture. Rich Fall colors with lots of berries. You know Fall is finally here. Believe me winter is not far behind!

Don’t forget to VOTE today!

Monday was a tranquil day as we depart from the warm late fall weather. Overnight we saw showers scattered showers across the area, but no particular area saw any real significant rainfall. Colder nights are ahead and even a mention of snow flurries in the forecast for the higher elevations on Tuesday as a cold front pushes through. The remainder of the week looks much cooler until early next week when temps rise to the low 60’s on Monday. Expect gusty winds over the next 24 to 36 hours as the fronts moves east away from Nelson. Some areas can expect gusts as high as 30 MPH.

The current national forecast map shows a cold front over Central Virginia now moving east toward the Atlantic. Behind the front expect sometimes gusty WNW winds with clearing skies and colder temps at night.
Map updates daily by 5:10 AM Eastern

Out 48 hours the cold front is well east out in the Atlantic with clear skies and fair weather for Central Virginia.

Bill
Local artist Bill Hess in a photo from our March 2006 issue of NCL.

Many of you will remember our stories on Bill Hess. He’s making quite a name since our two original stories over a year ago. Here’s some of what Bil’s doing and upcoming shows. His work is excellent!

A cool new art show called ARTIVISM has opened at McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville. The show highlights “the unique power of artists to challenge us and to awaken us all to the importance of green building and the preservation of our natural world, while at the same time reminding us of our own abilities to affect real change.” The show is a partial benefit for the Charlottesville Waldorf School. See http://www.greenestschool.org/ for more info (the quote is from their website).

Bill says he’s proud to be a part of this project with a hanging sculptural installation using fused bottle glass (in shapes of leaves), a tree branch, and actual tree leaves.

The opening reception was held this past Friday. The show will be up for the month of the November.

Another upcoming event:

“A HANDMADE SEASON”– an invitational show at the Artisan’s Center of Virginia (in Waynesboro). The dates are November 23- December 31. For more information about the Center see www.artisanscenterofvirginia.org

Bill’s work was recently accepted into a nice boutique in Atlanta called “Eco-Bella” see www.eco-bella.com

I am available to fulfill direct orders and commissions in time for the holidays…

Hill Top Berry Farm and Winery will be hosting our 3rd annual Anglo Saxon Feast on Saturday November 17, 2007 at 7:00PM.

This is a uniquely English celebration from medieval times, originally celebrating the life of St. Edmond. St Edmund was a 9th century King of Norfolk, an independent kingdom of Anglo-Saxon England who was martyred by the Danes in 870 A. D.

Come enjoy grilled Salmon steaks paired with our Anglo-Saxon style Cyser, one of our authentic historical meads. This will be an evening of good food and wonderful entertainment provided by the duo Laurie Rose Griffith and Peter Mealy. The music for the evening will be a mixture of traditional Celtic and American Folk.

Admission is $35 and includes dinner, entertainment and wine tasting. Reservations are required. Call 434-361-1266 for more information or visit their website: www.hilltopberrywine.com

Opening Hunt @ Oak Ridge Estate
Arrington, Virginia

Hunt-2

The weekend was pretty typical for an early November Fall. Much of Sunday morning was cloudy and very cool, but perfect for the opening hunt of the Oak Ridge Fox Hunt Club seen in today’s weather photo above. The Fall air was just perfect for the hunt, that’s really just a chase! You can see more photos from Sunday’s event by clicking here.

Also want to remind everyone about this coming weekend’s Elegant Evening of Jazz at the Rockfish Valley Community Center, November 10th. This is an annual event and a really nice affair. Tickets are still on sale. You don’t want to miss this one, we’ve gone for the past three years in a row! Just click on the link above for all of the details.

Today will be the last, somewhat warm day, for the remainder of the week as a cold front is working toward us with the promise of light scattered showers tonight followed by windy conditions and colder weather later in the week. I can’t even rule out the snow word by the end of this week but that’s a long way off right now. We may see a mix of rain and snow by Friday, some folks in the mountains west of the BRP may even see a few flakes of snow on Tuesday as the front exits the area. Nothing to write home over, but proof we are headed toward the winter season.

The current national forecast map shows a cold front working through the area over the next 36 hours. Today will start out mostly sunny, but become increasingly more cloudy and breezy as the day wears on. Chances for showers increase into the night time hours lingering into Tuesday morning.
Map updates daily by 5:10 AM Eastern

Out 48 hours the cold front is just east of Nelson with much colder air spilling in with temps in the 20’s common at night. Also look for gusty northerly winds.

Arrington : Opening hunt Oak Ridge Fox Hunt Club, lifetime honor to Wintergreen Pony Club

Opening Hunt @ Oak Ridge Estate
Arrington, Virginia

Main house

Nothing says Fall in Virginia as much as the opening fox hunt! Actually it’s not a hunt at all, it’s more of a chase and a chance for members of the Oak Ridge Fox Hunt Club to ride across the open fields with the howl of the hounds ahead. The ORFHC was originally established in 1887 in Lynchburg. It was moved to the Oak Ridge Estate in 1910. In 1993, Dr. Rita Mae Brown, Master of Fox Hounds, re-instituted the Fox Hunt at Oak Ridge.

At Sunday’s opening hunt Rita Mae made a most kind and generous announcement on the 120th anniversary of the hunt. She told the crowd gathered in front of the main house that any member of the Wintergreen Pony Club based at Rodes Farm would be able to ride with ORFHC at no charge, waiving normal annual dues, for the next 120 years! Rita Mae did this in honor of, Elschen and Iliana Strickler, who were tragically killed in a car wreck on August 30th. The young sisters were long time members of the Wintergreen Pony Club. Their memory was honored at Sunday’s hunt before it started.

Above, Rita Mae Brown, makes the announcement before the Sunday hunt kicked off.

Blessing of the hounds
Before the hunt starts, it’s tradition to bless the hounds for a safe and fun hunt.

Hayley & Lindsey
You’ve seen her work behind the camera, but NCL’s Hayley Osborne, is quite the equestrian as is her sister Lindsey to the left. You’ll see some of her photos the December issue.

Lynn-Tray
For any hunt to go off successfully, it takes organization. Enter Lynn Stevenson with the club. She was keeping everything running smoothly Sunday. Want a Fuji?

Gibb
While Lynn was coordinating, her husband Gibb, above, was getting ready to head out.

AFH
Here, Anne Fortune Henderson, long time member of ORFHC takes a minute to chat with some of Sunday’s riders.

Then it was off to the ride across the wide open estate, a perfect day!

Ice-Fox
After a couple of hours out on the ride, eveyone was treated to a wonderful brunch held in the Carriage House. This beautiful ice sculpture greeted folks when they came in.
