Greenfield Leaves
Changing colors in Greenfield, Virginia

Wednesday was a perfect day for trick or treating. Last night wasn’t as chilly as the past few nights. Today will be a warm and mild day before we head toward much cooler weather beginning Friday. The days will feel more like Fall as we head into the weekend and the first part of next week. Again, no rain is on the horizon at this time.

One good bit of news, Christina Kline, NCL outdoors writer, dropped a comment on the website yesterday to let us know things are looking up for snowmaking on the mountain. Christina lives on the mountain year round and is the manager at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports in the Mountain Inn. She has a pretty good ear on what develops up there.

She said:

I heard from someone in lift operations who works extensively with the Lake in summer that since Saturday enough has filled in that it is completely up to the dock and “if we get any more water I don’t know where we’re going to put it!”

Sounds good to me!

And to us Christina, that is very good news, now we just need the cold temps and the rest will happen!

The current national forecast map shows a cold front moving toward our area over the next 24 hours, but not before a beautiful day today. Warm temperatures will be the rule. Gusty winds may begin late Thursday as the front works through the area.

Out 48 hours cooler high pressure regains control keeping fall like temps in the forecast through the weekend, expect at times, gusty winds Friday behind the cold frontal passage.

And for those of you keeping score at home the numbers as of 11:59 PM last night Low temperature readings from the night before are generally posted no later than 12 noon when there’s something to really look at.

It’s here, Halloween! We just couldn’t resist the picture above late Tuesday afternoon when walking out of Basic Necessities. Just across the parking lot at the hardware store, the photo above is what we saw. I’ll leave it to you to figure out who it was, shouldn’t have to think too hard!

Today will be another great day weatherwise, and tonight, a wonderful night to trick or treat. A very typical evening for Halloween! Other than some temperature changes over the next few days, you can simply carbon copy the forecast as there won’t be many changes for days to come. Unfortunately, no rain on the horizon.

The current national forecast map continues to show high pressure in control. An approaching cold front will reinforce cool temperatures later in the week.

Lake Monacan @ Stoney Creek
Nellysford, Virginia

October 28
Water levels have improved at Lake Monacan in Stoney Creek since the rain last week. This is a photo from October 28th taken by Henri Weems.

October 21st
This is a photo taken about a week earlier on October 21st. Look at how much of the pier was showing below in this picture as compared to the one above.

We told you about the situation a few days ago here.

Here’s what Henri wrote us:

Tommy,

Wow! What a difference a week makes!

Here a is photo from Sun 21 Oct when we were at Lake Monocan, then the same a week later Sun 28 Oct.
At that time the lake was 1 foot from the spillway, then on Monday noon it was at 8 inches.

Normally it would likely spill this evening, but since neither lake is full, water will be diverted upstream tonight to refill the Tuckahoe lake.

Henri

Lake Monacan is important for a variety of reasons, but a big one is that it’s used for pulling water to the top of the mountain to make snow during ski season. Though not back to it’s previous levels, this is a drastic improvement.

Thanks for the updated pics Henri!

Tuesday Weather : Wintergreen, BRP, & Nelson County, VA : Continued Sunny – Warmer

Pumpkin Carving @ Wintergreen
Wintergreen Mountain, Virginia

spook-1
Above this past weekend, kids got the chance to carve their very own pumpkin at Wintergreen’s Annual Spook-Tacular event.

If there was any doubt that Fall would ever arrive, Sunday and Monday night took care of that. There were pretty good freezes both nights across the area with plenty of frost to go around. But the days have been great, perfect weather as we head toward Halloween tomorrow. Lots of Halloween events have been taking place like Wintergreen Resort’s Spook-Tacular. Our Hayley Osborne grabbed the shot above at one of the carving workshops. They had bat workshops, haunted houses, trick or treating, and the entire scary works!

Weatherwise no big changes over the next several days. We saw another pretty big frost this morning, but we won’t see that again, at least as widespread for several days, since temperatures will warm slightly. I can safely say the freeze Sunday night finished the growing season here in Greenfield. The basil is, uh, dead! Unfortunately after seeing some needed rain last week, there’s no real chances for it in the near future, 5-7 days.

We talked about Noel yesterday, today will be the last mention of him unless he does something unexpected and heads our way. All current forecasts show Noel heading out to sea away from the east coast. This late in the hurricane season seldom do hurricanes make landfall on the east coast. Only once in 100 years around 1899. By the way the predictions for an extremely active hurricane season never panned out. I have no faith in long range hurricane forecasts, nor should you! Ok enough editorial.

TS Noel, Here’s the latest tracking map of the location and where it’s headed.

The current national forecast map continues to show high pressure in firm control of our weather. That means clear skies with fair days and cool nights.

Out 48 hours high pressure is still in charge, though a cold front will work through mid-week slightly reinforcing the cool temps.

Dogwood Restaurant to Open in Nellysford
Nellysford, Virginia

Dogwood-1
Front view of what will be Nellysford’s newest restaurant to open in November. This is the old Rockfish Nursery & Garden Center just south of Nellysford on Route 151.

Yep, say it’s so! After many delays and much anticipation, over a year’s worth, Dogwood Restaurant will finally open for business in November, hopefully before Thanksgiving, says co-owner Cathy Hunt of Amherst. She and husband Dennis who already own Dogwood Cafe on Route 29 in Amherst County have been working to get the Nellysford location open for over a year. “The death of a business partner involved, set us back considerably,” says Cathy. NCL stopped in for lunch Sunday at her Amherst location and got the details on the anxiously anticipated opening of the Nelson location. Things are now on track!

They are in the process of hiring wait staff right now along with other support staff for the Nellysford location. There’s some remaining things to be done on the inside, mainly involving the walk in refrigerator, but after that Cathy says they will be ready to go. So, it’s literally a mater of weeks.

The new restaurant will have porch seating when the weather allows it, in addition to indoors. Cathy describes the restaurant as serving meals similar to the one in Amherst (good food we have eaten there several times in the past) but also having additional menu items desired in the area. They will have a wine and beer license which will feature local wineries and breweries over time.

Cathy tells me if anyone is interested in working with them in their new Nellysford location, call her right away as they are hiring now. Cathy or Dennis can be reached by calling their Amherst restaurant at: 434-946-0001.

We’ll keep you posted on their progress, but congrats to Dennis & Cathy. Welcome to Nellysford & Nelson County!

Fall in Nelson County, Virginia

Ellis Fall

Lots to talk about in the weather department this morning. Frost, freezing temps, and a new tropical storm named Noel (pronounced knoll) out in the Atlantic. But first, we want to thank Olivia Ellis for sending in this morning’s beautiful weather shot from one of the markers entering Nelson County. Look at all of the color in that picture and the brilliant blue sky! We really needed last week’s rain, but it was nice to see some pretty Fall sky this past weekend as well. Thanks again Olivia for sending the shot our way! If you have a weather photo you’d like us to share in the morning’s weathercast simply send it to weather – at – nelsoncounytlife.com. Be sure to tell us where the picture was taken and a brief description of what we’re looking at.

Also we have posted lots of new web stories this morning. Be sure to either scroll around to see them or look on the left side of your screen under Recent Posts where you can click directly to them. There’s one I know folks around Nellysford & Wintergreen are going to be interested in. Confirmation about the Dogwood Restaurant opening in a few weeks, finally. Great News! We spoke directly with Cathy Hunt yesterday in Amherst and got the skinny on what’s up. Don’t forget to check that and other news & photos out this morning.

Talk about a change in the temperatures! Many areas saw lows last night in the 30’s even 20’s in some locations, about time don’t you think as we enter the last few days of October. Some locations saw frost too for the very first time. We should really begin to see more cooling temps now as we enter November. Just an FYI we change time and lose that hour next weekend on November 4th. – I don’t see any chances for rain in the forecast until we get out about a week, and you know how reliable those extended forecasts can be! Not! If Noel does something crazy and throws moisture our way or heads this direction, that can certainly change. But the main weather feature over the next 48 hours will be very Fall like temperatures.

Speaking of TS Noel, here’s the latest tracking map of the location and where it might be headed. I’ll keep you posted if it looks like we’ll get any effects:

The current national forecast map high pressure in firm control of our weather. That generally means clear skies and gentle winds at night that will allow temperatures at or slightly below freezing overnight Monday, once again.

Out 48 hours high pressure is still in charge which means fair Fall like weather.
