Medieval Dinner Theater @ Hill Top
Nellysford, Virginia

Hilltop-1
Other than the electric lights you were transported back in time to the 13th century this past weekend at Hill Top Berry Farm & Winery. This October marked the 3rd year in a row they held their highly popular Medieval Dinner Theater.

The event featured a medieval style banquet consisting of five courses, a glass of Cyser which is an Anglo Saxon style apple mead, a glass of wine with dessert, and a wonderful night full of entertainment provided by The Doorway Singers, a medieval entertainment group from Virginia Beach.

Halloween on the petting farm and around at the table
Afton & Nellysford, Virginia

Halloween doesn’t officially hit until October 31st, but that didn’t stop the ghosts and goblins from getting an early start this past weekend in Nelson.

Headless-1
Talk about spooky, here’s the rider but no head? Mmmm, the headless horseman! Yep at MountainSide Petting Farm in Afton this past weekend, the headless horseman (in this case headless horsewoman, AKA Sindri Linen! – she knows a thing or two about horses..) rode out to give the kids a scare, but not too bad. Everyone had a great & spooky time!

Stacey-Pirate
This really is scary, pirates on the lose. This guy looks awfully familiar. Seems like I saw him just the other day building a house. Mind must be playing tricks on me. But I haven’t seen Al Stacey of Gaia Homes lately, coincidence, probably all it is.

kids-horseman
Don’t think the the spooky rider scared these kids too much, looks like the came prepared!

From the petting farm to the table

Addy Pumpkin
Just down the road at The Mark Addy in Nellysford, it was a Halloween flair this weekend with a special dinner Saturday night that encouraged pumpkins (nice carving job above) and encouraged folks to dress up in their favorite Halloween costumes, below..

Above, Heards’ Mountain locals, Jeff Vogelgesang & Jan Smith played a few tunes to get everyone in the spooky mood!

cubbing

In this weekend’s weather photo above, Hayley Osborne, captured this fabulous shot of cubbing in Virginia. That’s an event that precedes the opening day of fox hunting next month. Very Virginia! November is Hayley’s first month shooting and writing with NCL, but not the last! You’ll be seeing her work every month in our pages and here on the web. Hayley’s entire photo layout and story can be found on page 12 of the current November NCL issue hitting the shelves this weekend!

The weekend has been excellent thus far! Today will be another nice day. No rain on Saturday, but what we got last week was really nice. You can get details from all of the reporting NCL-Weathernet stations by selecting your station from the pull down menu in the upper left hand corner of your screen. Today looks nice with cool Fall like temperatures. Sunday night into early next week promises some frost and freezing temperatures.

The NWS has already issued a Frost Advisory for the area in the early morning hours before and around sunrise Monday:

Blue Mountain Brewery Opens
Afton, Virginia

mandi-sampler
Above, Mandi Smack, co-owner of Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, prepares a sampler tray of the different beers available at Nelson’s first micro brewery that opened Wednesday. You can read and see more pictures about their opening by clicking here.

First congratulations to Blue Mountain Brewery on their opening yesterday in Afton, Virginia. They are Nelson’s first micro brewery joining a large group of wineries that have been open here for years. Though the first, not the last, another is slated to open in Beech Grove sometime next year in the Glen Mary Village.

Finally, finally, finally, some decent rainfall over the past 24 hours. Not a huge rain, but many locations have picked up some nice rainfall. To our south near the NC border they even had tornado warnings issued Wednesday afternoon associated with some severe storms. Fortunately as I discussed earlier in the week, chances for rain hang around through the first part of the weekend. By the time the rains ends, we could see anywhere from 1 to 4 inches by the weekend. We should see the rain slacking off by late Saturday. Temperatures remain generally in the 60’s for daytime highs until late in the weekend and early next week when we’ll see more fall like weather with temps in the 50’s for daytime highs.

The current national forecast map shows a cold front barely through Central Virginia with an associated low pressure area to our west that will continue to provide chances for rain through the first part of the weekend.

Out 48 hours we still have rain in the Nelson area.

Mandi sampler
Mandi Smack, co-owner of Blue Mountain Brewery, prepares a sampler tray of all of the beers they make at their newly opened brewery in Afton.

Move over grapes and make room for hops! Blue Mountain Brewery opened its doors Wednesday at noon. Even with a rainy day, tons of folks packed Nelson’s first micro brewery. “It’s been awesome,” says Mandi Smack, co-owner and wife of Taylor, who is the official brew master of Blue Mountain. In addition to several beers they make, Rockfish Wheat is our personal favorite, they are serving several yummy dishes for lunch and dinner. At Wednesday’s opening we had the grilled vegi pizza! Perfect and very good!

Matt Nucci, co-owner, of the brewery was busy Wednesday behind the bar meeting and greeting customers. Congrats to Taylor, Matt & Mandi! First class operation!

You need to go by and check it out. They are open until 8PM. Visit their website for more information on days and hours of operation.

Above a member of the Rockfish Valley FD lets one of the youngsters see what it’s like to wear a breathing pack used when firefighters fight fires.

There were all kinds of demonstrations in all different occupations Monday at the Rockfish School. Youngsters got the chance to see all kinds of careers they might one day have interest in. Thanks to Stacey Johnson, Courtney Truslow, and principal, Nita Hughes, for inviting us over and showing great hospitality while there!

This fellow got to try out the mask portion of the rig, just in time for Halloween!

What can brown do for you?

gravel truck
From delivery trucks to dump trucks!

Verizon
Not that any of these youngsters needed any help talking, but these guys from Verizon showed them how their conversations travel across wires and how they work on them.

CVEC
And if you’re not interested in telephone wires, how about electric ones, the folks at CVEC showed them all about it!

VA Forrestry
Or if climbing poles isn’t in their future, maybe climbing trees with Smokey Bear might be!

Sheriff
OK, not interested in that Smokey Bear, how about this one?

chopper
Or a pilot or flight nurse / paramedic on one of these awesome helicopters. Air Care 5!

These were just a few of the demonstrations at Monday’s event. All of the folks that showed up had a great time and all of the kids got a chance to see what the future just might hold for them!
