Nelson Veterans got a warm welcome Friday morning at Rockfish River Elementary School. Students and faculty hold the ceremony each year to honor veterans who have served our country.

Principal Nita Hughes presented opening remarks, then The Nelson High Jazz Band played the Star Spangled Banner. By far the most moving moment in the entire program was when Retired Air Force Colonel Dave Randall, presented Charlie Truslow of Nelson County with a bronze star for his service in the U.S Army. Charlie’s house burned to the ground years ago destroying all of the medals from his service long ago in the army. He was able to replace all of the medals except for the bronze star. On Friday his wait was over as Col. Randall proudly reissued and pinned another start to Charlie’s chest. Charlie received a loud and proud round of applause from everyone there.

Remember this weekend to honor and thank all of the veterans and servicemen who have and continue to protect us here at home.

Elegant Evening of Jazz @ RVCC
Afton, Virginia

jazz
Last year’s Elegant Evening of Jazz at the Rockfish Valley Community Center.

Thursday was a very chilly day across Nelson County and up in the mountains it was just plain cold. At NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation (Devil’s Knob) they only made it to a high of 36 degrees. Conversely, the valley made it to upper 40’s to near 50° on the average. Friday will be a mostly cloudy day with showers moving in. On the mountains, we’ve seen some very light snow showers this morning, it will change to rain, then back to briefly to snow showers overnight Friday with perhaps an inch or less of accumulation by Saturday morning. Temperature will struggle to go much of anywhere due to the cloud cover. Overnight low Thursday weren’t as bad as the night before since we had the blanket of cloud above and milder winds from the south.

The weekend in general looks dry with temps slowly rising. It’s a perfect weekend to go to the Elegant Evening of Jazz at The Rockfish Valley Community Center. We’ve been going every year since we moved to Virginia. What a great time! Great food, excellent wines, and wonderful music. And the silent auction … lots of great items to bid on! See you there!

Once we get past late Friday night and early late Saturday morning, the remainder of the weekend looks sunny, more or less, and dry. We’ll see the temps creep up slowly as we head into the first part of next week.

Maps provided by: www.accuweather.com

The current surface map show a developing area of low pressure with an associated cold front in the Midwest making a run at Virginia. Over the next 24 hours look for scattered rain showers in the valley, perhaps rain / snow mix above 1000 feet. There’s the potential for a light covering of snow on the grassy areas in the mountains by noon Saturday.

Clouds will hang in there Saturday morning but I do think we’ll see some peeks of sun by afternoon in the valley, but less sun in the mountains. Looking ahead fair weather returns to the area by Saturday night for the remainder of the weekend.

Regional radar showed some frozen precipitation Friday morning in Northern Virginia and points west.

Virginia Chardonnay Scores Big

DELFOSSE CHARD

Faber, VA – DelFosse Vineyards Chardonnay 2005 Reserve Chardonnay earned a score of 93 and finished 2nd overall in a national tasting dominated by California estates including Cosentino, Grgich, Rodney Strong and O’Brien. The Beverage Testing Institute’s (BTI) 2007 World Wine Championships judged the Chardonnay as “exceptional” awarding it a score of 93.

“This is the finest example we have seen of Virginia Chardonnay,” said BTI Director Jerald O’Kennard. “It shows the region is an area that deserves attention from connoisseurs and consumers”. The DelFosse Reserve Chardonnay score of 93 is the highest ever recorded for a Virginia wine and the second highest Chardonnay score of the nearly one thousand wines evaluated in the last four years according to BTI’s extensive tasting database.

The 2005 DelFosse Reserve Chardonnay benefits from 11 months of aging in French oak barrels. This rich estate grown wine features nice toast aromas with nutty vanilla and a touch of baked apple. Great balance and structure provides nice length and a memorable finish.

Claude DelFosse, Founder of DelFosse Vineyard and Winery said, “I am thrilled to see Virginia receiving accolades as a leading wine region. Working a stone’s throw from the home of ‘the father of American wine’, Thomas Jefferson, all of us at DelFosse are dedicated to grow world class wines right here in Nelson County”.

DelFosse Winery is nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Faber, Virginia. With nearly 20 acres of terraced vineyards on the estate, DelFosse Vineyards and Winery is one of the most picturesque sites in the Monticello AVA. The winery and tasting room are open for visitors and tastings Wednesday – Sunday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information visit their website www.delfossewine.com or call 434-293-6100.

Since 1981, BTI has been dedicated to providing consumers with fair and impartial wine reviews. Their international newsletter may be found at www.tastings.com.

Fall Along The Blue Ridge Parkway
Nelson County, Virginia

BRP-1

Wednesday was a sunny but cool, sometimes cold day in Nelson County, especially if you were up in the mountains. At Wintergreen they barely made it into the 40’s. NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation at Devil’s Knob reached an afternoon high of 42 degrees just before noon, but they remained in the 30’s for most of the day. In the valley it was a bit better with temps in the mid 50’s overall. Breezy winds gave way to calmer conditions in the afternoon. Overnight last night was some of the coldest weather we have seen this year. 20’s were common place all around the area with a hard freeze in most places.

Some changes taking place over the next 48 hours as we move toward a more cloudy pattern with rain in the forecast by Friday possibly mixing with snow late Friday night. By early next week temps moderate a bit after a fairly cool weekend.

Maps provided by: www.accuweather.com

The current surface map has high pressure losing control later today allowing for clouds to filter in the area by afternoon and certainly overnight. With clouds in place temperatures won’t be dropping as cold as last night.

Looking ahead a an area of disturbed weather will move into Central Virginia providing chances for light rain Friday with a rain / snow mix possible Friday night.

Fall Colors in Stoney Creek

Fall colors in Stoney Creek

We continue to see plenty of brilliant Fall colors across Central Virginia and Nelson County. Today’s weather photo comes to us courtesy of Ann Strober in Nellysford. Ann’s been sending us a steady supply of great images captured with her new Nikon D-40 camera. Be looking for many more in the coming weeks. She’s got some great ones!

Election Day is now in the history books. Weather for Tuesday’s voting was perfect, though a little breezy and cool for a big part of the day. You can click here to see the precinct results from yesterday’s election. Last night was a bit breezy with winds spilling behind the cold front that moved through. Today won’t be much of a change from that, and we’ll continue to see some gusty winds, especially in the first part of the day. Tonight promises some of the coldest weather yet, with temperatures dipping to the low 20’s in the mountains. If we see the winds settle down to near calm, a widespread hard freeze will occur.

The national forecast map has high pressure controlling our weather over the next 48 hours. Breezy winds for the first part of Wednesday will begin to diminish in the afternoon.
Map updates daily by 5:10 AM Eastern

Looking ahead a couple of days high pressure stays parked near Virginia keeping fair skies in the forecast, but cooler temperatures as well. A disturbance toward the end of the week may provide chances for flurries or light snow in the mountains mainly west of the BRP.
