Racoons

A special thanks to Al Stacey of Gaia Homes for today’s weather picture he sent along. Al told us he was headed home and spotted these three fellows along the road, they scampered up the tree and posed for the shot you see above. What a bunch of hams!

Today will be a fairly quiet and mild day before major changes begin taking place over the next 18 to 24 hours. A weak front stalled over the area last night keeping temperatures mild. It’s falling apart as it moves east today. Yesterday we got a smattering of rain, but most areas remained dry. Look for southerly winds to increase this afternoon, becoming gusty at times. Tonight chances for rain and even thundershowers increase in advance of the next cold front. Tomorrow the high temperature for the day will occur early in the day with falling temps throughout the afternoon. It will feel blustery with winds shifting to the north and gusty by Thursday morning. Snow may be in the forecast by late in the weekend for the mountains.

Maps provided by: www.accuweather.com

The national current surface map shows a strong cold front to the west headed for Central Virginia. Today will be partly sunny with increasing clouds as the day wears on, with showers possible by late afternoon, perhaps a thundershower as well.

Over the next 24 hours the cold front shifts east of Nelson and brings in much cooler air behind with gusty northerly winds. There is a slight chance for a snow flurry or two west of the BRP after the front gets east of the area Thursday.

Witch Hazel Winter Blooms along the Appalachian Trail
Near Jarman’s Gap, Virginia

witch hazel

It’s a great time of year for hiking up on the AT and along the BRP. Our daily and very faithful reader, Henri Weems of Rodes Farm sent us this morning’s weather photo of the winter witch hazel blooms near Jarman’s Gap. What a beautiful site!
Here’s Henry’s background on the photo:

“Saw this Witch Hazel with it’s pretty yellow flowers blooming on a cloudy autumn day along the Appalachian Trail.

The building in the background is the Calf Mountain AT shelter near Jarman’s Gap.

From Wikipedia:

“The flowers are sometimes produced on the leafless stems in winter, thus one alternative name for the plant, “Winterbloom”. Each flower has four slender strap-shaped petals 1-2 cm long, pale to dark yellow, orange, or red.

The name Witch has its origins in Middle English wiche, from the Old English wice, meaning “pliant” or “bendable”. Hazel is derived from the use of the twigs as divining rods, just as hazel twigs were used in England.”

Interestingly, this shrub is growing not far from a spring!

Henri”

Henri, we appreciate the photo and the little lesson on the background!

Before we are off to weather, be sure to check out updates on the left under recent posts about the soon to open Dogwood Restaurant in Nellysford and an update about the missing 8 year old over the weekend.

Whew, talk about missing the temperature prediction for Monday by a country mile, I did! My original thinking was we’d have a warm front in the area for most of the day which would provide cloud cover keeping the temps near 60. Instead we had ample sunshine for a big part of the day warming things up nicely to around 70°. We’ll continue to see mild temperatures until Wednesday when a stronger cold front approaches the area cooling us back to seasonal normals by Thursday afternoon. Today we’ll start out with slight chances for scattered showers and some peeks of sun with increasing clouds and showers by afternoon as a front makes it through the area. This front won’t cool the temperatures, but the next one will in about 48 hours.

Maps provided by: www.accuweather.com

The national current surface map shows a cold front to the west working through the area with rain showers scattered along the front. It’s a pretty slow mover, so look for clouds to hang in most of the day once we get into the afternoon hours.

Over the next several hours front #1 moves through and allows for warmer conditions Wednesday. By Thursday we’ll begin to see temperatures cool throughout the afternoon. Showers are possible again Wednesday night as well in advance of the front #2.

Dogwood Restaurant to Open

We first told you the news back in late October right here. We have an update as of Monday afternoon. Things are on schedule for an opening within 2-3 weeks. We stopped in this afternoon at the Nellysford location and spoke again with Kathy & Dennis Hunt, the owners. They were busy setting up tables and sprucing up. It’s cute folks, very cute and a very nice place!

They told us they are waiting on delivery of a refrigeration unit later this month and then they are ready to open. They continue to hire staff for the Nellysford restaurant and anyone interested in applying there can either stop by in person in Nellysford, or give them a call at their Amherst restaurant by calling: 434-946-0001

We’ll keep you updated!

Wintergreen : Missing 8 year old boy from weekend : Update

Above, the Williamsburg Community Chapel that helped locate 8 year old Sam Bacon over the weekend.

We first told you about an 8 year old missing boy at Wintergreen this past weekend. Original post here. It had a very happy ending. Since our original story the group leader of the Williamsburg Community Chapel sent us an e-mail with more details of the search that night. I’ll just let Mr. Ritter tell his wonderful story. Thank all of you at Williamsburg for your wonderful help to our community!

“My name is Jon Ritner, and I am the group leader from the Williamsburg Community Chapel in Williamsburg, VA. We had 175 men attending our annual Men’s Retreat at Wintergreen this weekend. Here is more information on the missing boy.

The boy, Sam Bacon, was 8 years old. Around 5 PM he got disoriented and was separated from his family while hiking near Lady Slip near the top of Wintergreen Resort.

At 9 PM, our group of men were finishing the evening’s session and the word began to spread that there was a missing boy on the mountain. We asked the front desk to call each of our units/homes and notify them that search parties were forming. Nearly every man showed up to help search and the men began praying for his safety. We were transported from the main lodge to Lady Slip in shuttle busses where we checked in with Emergency Services personnel. Around 10:15 PM, bloodhounds arrived and were sent into the woods with a team after smelling the boy’s seat in the car, and some clothes. The group of men, were told we were going to wait 20 minutes for the dogs to begin to locate the trail.

Around that time, police officers asked those not properly dressed to assist in the search by going door to door looking for the boy in or around the nearby condo units.

After 11, the police decided it was too dangerous for all of the men to head into the woods, and asked that only those with mountain hiking experience, proper clothing, to remain and be ready to search. Nearly half of the men stayed and half were sent home. Before splitting up the group, the men from the Chapel came together again to pray.

Around 11:30, one of the men from the Chapel, Dick Robins, was going unit to unit with a Cable Repair man who was volunteering in the search party as well. They came upon a cul de sac of houses in the area. Upon searching around one of the homes, they found a boy in an open utility room with a light on. They called out, “Is that you Sam?” After identifying him They took the boy back to the command post, where he was walked through the large group of volunteers and towards his families unit. His parents were notified and came running to greet him. His mother said to Sam, “I am more excited to see you now then on the day you were born!.” As the family embraced, the crowd of volunteers cheered.”

First Snow of The Season
Wintergreen Mountain, Virginia

Updated : 8:00 AM EST for decreasing clouds. Look for more sun to peek through as the day wears on. Morning clouds and fog will begin to dissipate allowing more sun.

Well, it’s official. The first snowfall of the season hit over the weekend upon the mountains at places like Wintergreen Resort and Devil’s Knob. Our NCL Mountain Photographer, Christina Kline grabbed the photo above along with several other great ones you can see by clicking here. Late Friday night the light rain turned to snow in the higher elevations. Though not enough to create any problems, most areas above 2000 feet saw at least a couple of inches of snow. Don’t look for any snow over the next several days, temperatures will be on the rise as milder winds blow in.

Before we get off into the weather, several things were going on this weekend that you can check out on the left hand side of your screen under Recent Posts including the happy ending to a search for a missing 8 year old boy over the weekend at Wintergreen, Cardinal Point’s Annual Oyster Roast, The Rockfish Valley Community Center’s Elegant Evening of Jazz, and Nelson Middle School’s production of School House Rock. Be sure to check them all out!

As mentioned off the top, we’re headed into milder weather over the next 2-3 days, even nearing 70° degrees by tomorrow. We had some scattered light showers overnight thanks to a warm front that scooted through. So look for much milder weather before we head back into more seasonal temps behind a cold front Wednesday. The end of the week looks seasonal and cooler with temps back in the 50’s for daytime highs.

Maps provided by: www.accuweather.com

The national current surface map shows a warm front in the area with a weak cold front west moving through.

Over the next several hours the front works east and eventually falls apart. The next weather maker, a stronger cold front is to our west. It promises chances for rain by Wednesday.

Many of you have called or e-mailed regarding the missing 8 year old boy being searched for Saturday night upon the mountain near the AT. Our mountain photographer / reporter, Christina Kline, just e-mailed us with this update:

“All I heard was that he was out hiking with his parents, ran off, got lost, and they found him around midnight at a house near the AT/BRP.
There was huge search party looking for him, including 200 guys from a Williamsburg church men’s group that is here for a retreat.”

That’s excellent news, and we’re glad the youngster was located safe and well!

A huge thank you to, Josh Palumbo, up at The Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob. Josh ran out and grabbed a couple of shots of the first snowfall of the season for us. We already got an e-mail from John Taylor on the mountain this morning telling us it had snowed last night.

On Nov 10, 2007, at 7:27 AM:
John Taylor wrote:
“Looks about 2 inches on top of Wintergreen — but it’s really puffy and feels more like a heavy dusting. Sun is now out.”

Very nice! Reports vary from 1 to 3 inches depending on which part of the ridge you are on, but regardless of the amounts, very nice to see the snow beginning!

Don’t forget, you can always see real live weather by visiting our very own NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation,by clicking here, weather station at their office on Devil’s Knob at 3500 feet above! Or you can simply use the handy drop down menu on the upper left hand side of your screen to visit any of the NCL Weather net stations. Pretty neat!

Nice to see we’re getting some initial snowfall so Santa has a place to land the sleigh next month!

Thanks again Josh for the great pics!
