Today’s weather photo sent by faithful reader and photographer, Ann Strober of Nellysford, is fitting. Looks more like something we’d have up in the Spring! Today will feel like Spring for one last time, then we’re going to go back to late Fall and early Winter. Before I get way off into the upcoming Thanksgiving Day forecast, I have to thank Chuck Strauss for his nice comments he sent along about our NCL site here and accompanying Nelson County Life Magazine. Chuck also had a little fun with my hawk vs turkey vulture comments. You can read it all by clicking here. But again Chuck thank you for sending along your kind remarks, it’s nice to hear!

Wednesday will be way above normal temperature wise, for that fact so was Tuesday. The sun came out and warmed many areas into the lower 70’s. Today will make the mid 70’s in many locations. By tonight changes will be on the way for Thanksgiving Day. Rain is in the forecast for a large portion of the Eastern U.S. Thursday, including Central Virginia and Nelson. This rain doesn’t look very impressive, but everyone should see some showers. We may even hear an isolated clap of thunder early Thursday. A rain / snow mix is possible on the back side in the higher elevations say above 2500 feet as the colder air comes in behind the front Friday morning. But nothing to be concerned over at this point. A much more impressive rain looks to be on the way Sunday into Monday with generous amounts. Points south of Nelson may actually see some freezing rain on Saturday night into Sunday morning as moisture moves into the area there from the south. Warm air will eventually move in turning it all to rain. Hard to predict this far out, but worth watching.

By next week rain continues into Tuesday with slowly warming temperatures by mid-week.

Turkey Vulture over Nellysford, Really!
Nellysford, Virginia

turkey vulture

Ok, if you have been reading any of the comments from last week about me calling a turkey vulture a hawk, you know we’ve had lots of fun here with it. The story continues today. Ann Strober, who’s work you see here often sent this picture above Monday. This one is up close and personal, and she says, a turkey vulture. She was able to zoom in enough to get a really nice shot! Though Christina did say in her comment that it was kind of hard to tell for sure in that first picture from that angle….ahhh some redemption, thanks for bailing me out a little Christina!

Monday started out pretty gloomy but the sun did manage to finally make it out by afternoon in most places. Oddly, the afternoon high on the mountain was the same as the valley due to cloud cover. Today will start much like yesterday. A warm front to our south is moving north over the area and just how far north it gets determines who see more sun than not. If we can get it to scoot through the area, this will allow warm temps and more sun to filter in. Right now we’ll call it partly sunny by afternoon. We talked about cold air damming in yesterday’s weather (scroll below) and that’s exactly what’s taking place today. Tomorrow will be a really warm day with low & mid 70’s across the area. Normal highs and lows for this time of the year are around 50 & 30. Not to worry the freezer door is about to open again very soon!

Showers will move in by Thanksgiving Day continuing into Thursday night before clearing and becoming colder by the weekend. Chances for rain are back in the forecast by Sunday night. I can’t rule out a rain / snow mix with either of these systems in the mountains as the rain exits, but right now, nothing much to talk about.

By next week rain chances stay in the forecast with again a rain / snow mix possible in higher elevations.

Opportunity Ball @ Veritas Winery & Vineyard
Afton, Virginia

Low light OB

Another Opportunity Ball is now in the history books! This past weekend lots of folks packed Veritas Winery & Vineyard for the annual event. It was a great time and they raised lots of money for The Nelson County Community Fund. We had a great time for a very worthy cause. You can see many more pictures of Saturday night’s event by clicking here.

We have a short workweek coming up with Thanksgiving ahead, and weatherwise, look for a lot of clouds today especially if you’re near the eastern side of the BRP. A low level moisture layer will get trapped up next to the mountains, especially in the early part of the day. A common occurrence you hear us discuss from time to time called, cold air damming. We talked about it here in more detail from an earlier post. If high pressure can win out we may see the clouds wash out later in the day. Many areas especially south and west of the mountains may see plenty of sunshine and warm temps. If the cloud layer hangs in there look for cool temps near the mountains.

Early this week we start cool, then look for mild, even warmer temps mid-week before a strong system moves through Wednesday night into Thursday providing chances for rain and a rain / snow mix mountains by Friday. Thanksgiving Day looks rainy right now. Behind that system look for colder temps and windy conditions, much like we experienced last week.

Peak Colors of Fall
Greenfield, Virginia

Fall colors Greenfield

Many of us, me included thought this Fall’s beautiful colors just wouldn’t happen. Not so! Mother nature has a funny way of proving us wrong every time, especially if you are in the weather department! That’s why I tend not to panic about droughts, floods, etc, they are cycles and in the grand scheme of things very short term. Ironically, this year’s colors have been some of the most brilliant in just the past week. This is a maple right outside the office here in Greenfield. What color!

A weak clipper system will affect our weather over the weekend bringing us variably cloudy skies from time to time.

NCL has learned from reports and from firsthand accounts of drivers calling into our office that there are at least three accidents working right now on I-64 West bound between Exit 99 (Afton) and the 102 mile markers. As seen in the screeshot above, traffic is backed up a lot along the interstate.

If you know anyone traveling that area, tell them to take U.S. 250 over the mountain vs I-64 until they have it cleaned up.

Hawk in the Valley

Another great shot sent today by Ann Strober of Nellysford, courtesy of her new Nikon D-40. We always enjoy seeing what the next photo from Ann’s going to be and Thursday’s is a great one of this hawk soaring above the Rockfish Valley.

Wednesday was a very mild day with only a few sprinkles scattered around the area. After midnight last night rain moved in. Expect the showers to continue today, especially this morning as breezy northerly winds move in behind a cold front. Looks for gusts to near 30 MPH by afternoon continuing into the evening hours. Tonight will be cold for everyone with snow flurries at Wintergreen and along the BRP. By the weekend, look for daytime temperatures back in the 50’s valley and in the 40’s mountains. Skies will be mostly sunny.

Maps provided by: www.accuweather.com

The national current surface map shows the cold front and associated precipitation in the area today, but moving east away from Nelson throughout the afternoon. Strong winds build in behind the front.

Over the next 24 hours the cold front moves east and cool high pressure takes control bringing fair weather to the area for the weekend. No big chances for rain are in the extended forecast until midweek at the earliest.

community chapel
Folks from The Williamsburg Community Chapel above organized and helped out the local rescue and search teams.

Tonight Sam’s parents e-mailed NCL and wanted to extend their thanks to all of the people who helped locate their son safe & sound:

“My name is Erin Bacon and my son, Sam, is the boy who was lost this past weekend at Wintergreen.

I am writing in hopes that you will pass along our deepest thanks to the hundreds of people who searched for him. We are so grateful that he was found safely and humbled by the kindness of strangers.

Sam is doing well and has even told us it was exciting to meet the Sheriff and ride in the ambulance. I think he is getting tired of us following him around, but he’ll have to be patient with us. For Christmas, each of our 3 boys will be getting a whistle to wear in the woods.

There is no way we can adequately express how thankful we are for the wonderful people who brought our son back to us.

Sincerely,
Erin Bacon”

Erin, you are most welcome! The rescue, fire & police squads at Wintergreen & Nelson along with the sheriff’s department are second to none! We know many of them read our site each morning and will be delighted to see your e-mail.

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
