Hayley on Crutches

So you heard us mention briefly that our newest photographer and writer, Hayley Osborne, had a nasty spill from her horse about a week ago.

From our November 24th post:

“Our Valley Photographer, Hayley Osborne (we thought about calling her valley girl, but then, NOT!) had a little mishap with a certain horse. Ask her, horse went left, she went right! Hayley was going to shoot this, but a little tough on crutches!”

Hayley shot and wrote our cover story for the December issue of NCL about A Family Tree, page 11, on Cub Creek Road. It’s out on stands now! We caught up with Hayley today for the first time since her little mishap and found she’s doing fine, but for sure is on the crutches sporting a nice “fashionable” white leg brace. Hayley is an avid runner, so not being able to run is really getting on her nerves …. think it gonna be awhile Hayley! Anyway, we want to wish her a speedy recover, and if you want to send Hayley get well wishes, you can e-mail her: Hayley-at-NelsonCountyLife.Com The reason we type the “@” symbol spelled out is because this prevents those nasty spam search robots from grabbing this from our website, simply replace the “at” with @.

Tuesday was a perfect late Fall day. A good day to be out on your horse riding, or playing golf, you name it. Though the wind made it feel a little chilly, once the afternoon rolled around, it became pleasant. Honestly this is a pretty quiet weather week coming up. The next major change on the horizon is the chance of snow by late in the weekend on Sunday night. Numerically speaking, we are just now heading into the time we begin seeing the chance for snow. By late November and into December our odds increase. We’ll take it. They have already started making some snow up at Wintergreen Resort, and as the average temperatures become colder it will make their job much easier.

Look for cold nights and seasonal days through the weekend, with that chance of snow by Sunday night. We’ll keep you posted on that as it develops.

Basic Necessities in Nellysford is part of the local slow food revolution. Now owners Kay Pfaltz, Keith Dix, and Bev Lacey have upped the ante by hiring one of the area’s original slow-fooders, Chef Gail Hobbs Page, who’ll be guest-chefing at the little Nelson County eatery several nights a week.

“Gail is one of Charlottesville’s original ‘localvores’,” says Pfaltz. “For the past 12 years, she’s been a leader in our Eat-Local movement. She passionately embraces the philosophy that if it can be trucked in from somewhere else, it can be produced right here in Central Virginia!”

The idea is that locally produced food– produced within a 100-mile radius of where you live– is the complete package when it comes to eating healthy, protecting the environment, and taking a stand against the corporate, government-subsidized farm industry. (Unfortunately, it appears the government is taking its own stand against local foodies. Recently, local farmers Richard Bean and Jean Rinaldi were arrested for mislabeling their pork products. Perhaps that’s why so many refer to the movement as a revolution.)

Page was recently featured on the PBS series Endless Feast, which focused on chefs across the country who “cook locally.” She also owns Caromont Farmstead Chevre and makes goat cheese with milk from her herd of 60 Nubians, Alpines, and La Manchas in southern Albemarle.

Pfaltz, a writer who teaches in Mary Baldwin’s adult degree program and leads food, wine, and literature tours to France, opened Basic Necessities in 1997 with her partner, Judy Nelson (yes, of Martina Navratilova fame) after living in Paris for 10 years.

“I felt rural Nelson County needed the basic necessities of life,” says Pfaltz. “… good wine, fresh bread, real cheese and chocolate, the things found on every street corner in France.”

While Pfaltz admits their cuisine isn’t really French, it’s fresh, homemade, and local and/or organic when possible.

“We try to stay far away from factory farmed meats and the big food companies such as US Foods, Sysco, and the like,” she says.

Pfaltz describes the atmosphere as provençal or Mediterranean. With only six tables out back on a screened porch, and a working fireplace in the winter, it could also be described as a unique, cozy little getaway.

“We’re small, casual, and kind of funky,” she says.

Bobcat

We’re back in the saddle today. We’ve been gone over the past few days doing weather from the road over the Thanksgiving holiday. Before getting started, I just have to comment on this today’s weather photo sent to us by Lyna Watson down at Wintergreen Hardware in Nellysford. This is a shot her friend Craig, (sorry Craig can’t remember you last name) got over Thanksgiving up at Wintergreen. Yep folks, that is a bobcat! Not a bad shot. Thanks Craig and Lyna for sending that one on to us!

Not to worry today, no bobcats in the forecast. After a nice rainfall Monday, better weather is in the mix today. After a lingering morning shower or two with some passing clouds, we’ll see mostly sunny skies and fairly mild conditions, thought it will be windy from time to time, and slowly falling temps by late in the day. By midweek overnight temps cool to near seasonal normals. The next chance for rain right now is roughly Sunday when we could see snow showers as well. There is a slight chance of showers Wed night into early Thursday, but I think that system will be mainly dry at this point.

Forecast Updated: 9:00 AM EST

Regional Radar look via Wundergound.com

We are still on the road folks. Hoped to have made it back into Nelson by late Sunday night, just didn’t happen. It’s a 12 hour drive back to Nelson from far Western Tennessee. As I prepare this forecast I am in a motel in Wytheville, VA on their wi-fi network with laptop. As far as we could make it! The trip across Tennessee Sunday night was terrible. Bumper to bumper traffic, rain and accidents all along I-40 in particular east of Nashville. We knew about one of them, an 8 car pile up with a fatality, so we skirted around it on the old U.S 70 Highway. Anyway, we’ll have to go with the generic NWS forecast for today.

I’ll have the custom forecast with audio again for Tuesday. Ironically, for Monday’s cast I’d say the NWS is pretty close this time. We’ll see plenty of rain, some thunder, mild conditions, and winds increasing in the afternoon.

Christmas Trees Arrive

Updated 3:40 PM EST 11-24-07

You know it’s getting colder when you see scenes like the one above in the weather photo sent to us by Ken & Yvonne Harris at a.m. FOG in Afton. Ken says they unloaded all of their Christmas trees on Friday. Don’t you just love this time of year!

We’re still doing weather from the road this weekend on a trip back into Western Tennessee near Memphis.

Friday night was the coldest night yet. Temperatures dropped into the teens in the valley and mid teens mountains. Up at Wintergreen Resort they started making snow Friday afternoon. See associated story and pics by clicking here. Saturday was a fairly chilly day across Nelson, with valley temps only making it into the 40’s for afternoon highs and on the mountain our NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation station made it up to a high of 33° around 11:20 AM Saturday morning. Their morning low was a very cold 15°. Saturday night look for clouds to increase and temps to not be as cold at Saturday morning’s. Sunday we’ll see some breaks of the clouds but I expect more clouds than sun in advance of the next system moving our way bringing rain Sunday night into Monday night. We are seeing signs of the same system here in Western TN right now. Sleet Saturday morning, as the system moves east toward Nelson rain will develop late in the weekend. I still cannot rule out some frozen precipitation on the mountain as the rain begins, but warmer air will begin moving in by Monday morning changing to all rain.

Temperatures moderate a bit for the first part of the week, cooling slightly again by mid week.

It’s official! Snow making began at Wintergreen Resort Friday afternoon. You can go to our site there anytime 24 hours a day to get real live weather conditions on the mountain. Just use the handy drop down menu on the upper left hand side of your screen under More NCL Weathernet Stations! Our wonderful Mountain Photographer, Christinia Kline, grabbed these shots for us. “We are happy that Mother Nature has cooperated and allowed us to begin preparation for what will be a great winter season at the resort. Based on the hundreds of phone calls, advance bookings and sales of our season pass, there is obviously a significant pent up demand for winter activities such as those we offer,” says Bob Ashton, President, of Wintergreen Resort .

A quick congratulations to all of the recent graduates of The Central Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program. Peter Agelasto pictured on the far right along with his wife Betsy and all of the others recently completed the course. He passed this on to us. They are all now Master Naturalists in training! Think I even see Linda Heuer in the group too!

Peter also adds:

Graduation was Nov 17. The next step is 8 hours of advanced training and 40 hours of volunteer service on projects offered by the partners. Rockfish Valley Foundation will be offering an invasive plant removal project followed by a native plant installation project.

The local partners in our Blue Ridge Chapter are Rockfish Valley Foundation, Friends of Rockffish Watershed, Wintergreen Nature Foundation, Wildlife Center of Virginia, nature Camp, USDOF- Blue Ridge parkway and USDOF -Sherando. Michael Lachance is the chapter advisior . He is the Nelson Extension agent.

Anyone interested in the program can contact:

Again, a big congrats to all of the recent graduates!

A quick look at the next 24-36 hours. Showers began in some portions of the area overnight, mainly south. As the day wears on look for scattered showers to move into Central Virginia. Like I mentioned in Wednesday’s cast, this is not going to be a big rainmaker. We have a much better organized system headed our way by early next week, that promised better chances. But we’ll certainly see showers early today as a cold front works through. The big story will be the falling temperatures and windy conditions later today.

We’ll start out the day fairly mild with showers, but the afternoon brings gusty winds along with falling temperatures. This evening will be a great time to be inside by the fire!
