Ski Season Opens At Wintergreen Resort
Wintergreen, Virginia

Above, Doug Caldwell, ride (Snowboard) instructor at Wintergreen Resort, gives Yvette Stafford, Publisher of NCL, a refresher course before getting back on the slopes for the 2007-2008 season.

It’s official, the 2007-2008 ski and ride season officially kicked off Saturday. NCL got a preview Friday when employees of the resort got to try out the slopes first. Yvette who started learning snowboarding last season, got a refresher course before taking to the slopes at least once before they shutdown for the day. “The ski & ride season at Wintergreen Resort is officially open as of Saturday, December 8th for day activities,” says Anne Marie Jones, Public Relations & Communications Coordinator with Wintergreen. Tubing and night skiing have not started just yet, but the resort will be letting everyone know as soon as it opens.

We got the chance to see Anne Marie taking her first lesson as well. She just began her new job at the resort this past Tuesday. She’s from Lynchburg and will be handling the day to day public relations duties at the resort. We like Anne Marie, a great person! And from the pictures below, she’s ready to learn all about the winter sports at Wintergreen firsthand! Welcome to Nelson County Anne Marie!

And look who showed up out there on the slopes to get a taste of the coming season? None other than our own NCL Mountain Photographer, Christina Kline. Christina is the real thing folks. Though she’s got the poles in this picture, she often skis without them! And she’s training to become part of Wintergreen’s elite ski patrol. She’ll be a good one for them, she really does know how to handle the slopes!

Okay, Yvette doesn’t have every aspect of it mastered! No Doug, she didn’t fall with hands extended, (a no-no in snowboarding) she’s getting back up!

But that doesn’t stop her from getting right back up and trying again!

Our very special thanks to Doug, Anne Marie and everyone else in the winter sports division at Wintergreen for making us feel welcome for Friday’s shoot. You can get more information about skiing and riding at Wintergreen by logging on to Wintergreen Resort’s website by clicking here.

RVCC Holiday Community Market & Pancake Breakfast
Afton, Virginia

Serving line
Before the market kicked off, the regular Rockfish Valley Community Center Breakfast started the morning with lots of yummy food!

The first ever Holiday Community Market looks to be a great success from the number of folks that turned out Saturday at the RVCC following the regular breakfast there. It was sort of an after season extension of the Nelson Farmers Market held during the warm months in Nellysford.

Lots and lots of booths lined the old gym floor at RVCC.

Coffee House Construction Begins : The Village at Glen Mary
Beech Grove, Virginia

coffee-1

After lots of waiting and lots of dirt work, Steve Crandall of Tectonics II, is starting the process of what will eventually become the restaurant & brewery side of The Village at Glen Mary in Beech Grove. That’s along Route 664 on the way to Wintergreen Resort. This week Steve’s crews began reassembling the old Arrington Train Depot, originally built in 1870. Eventually the building will be a coffee / sandwich shop combination as a part of The Village at Glen Mary. “We’ll have a deck out on the back and you’ll be able to sit right there with a view of Three Ridges, “says Steve. The old depot is the first phase of construction where Nelson’s next micro brewery will be located in the coming months as construction progresses. You can see many more pictures at the site by clicking here.

Before we get into the weekend forecast we want to remind everyone that ski season officially kicks off Saturday at 9:00 AM at Wintergreen Resort. They have been making snow all week long and so far it looks great on the mountaintop! AND, we want to send out a thank you to David Hall in Stoney Creek. David left us a message saying that he and several others listen to, and read, our daily custom weathercasts here at NCL. We appreciate the compliments – and you stopping by each morning!

Can you say cold? It has been over the past couple of days. Thursday morning’s low at NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation was a bone chilling 7.5 degrees just before sunrise. Even in the valley it was cold with morning lows in the low 20’s here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine. Friday morning equally as cold with very low readings upon the mountains and in the valley as well. Click on the links below the maps to see the actual overnight low readings.

The weekend promises to be more forgiving temperature wise with very mild readings by the time we get to Sunday and Monday. A series of disturbances will keep lots of clouds in the area starting Friday into the weekend, with some light snow possible Friday morning and afternoon. More widespread rain develops Sunday afternoon extending through much of next week. Temperatures cool down again by next Thursday.

One final thing, don’t forget The RVCC Pancake Breakfast Saturday December 9th at 8:30 AM immediately followed by The Holiday Community Market. It starts at 9 AM and runs all day until 4 PM. Click right here to get all of the details! See you there!

Nellysford, Virginia

SC Tree Lighting

The first light snow of the season for the valley is history and sunny skies will be moving in today. In the picture above folks gathered last night for the annual Christmas Tree lighting at Stoney Creek in Nellysford. In addition to the tree lighting, there was caroling and Santa Clause dropped by for a visit. Though there wasn’t a lot of snow, there was just enough flying around in the air to make it feel like Christmas. You can see more of last night’s pictures at the tree lighting by clicking here. Speaking of snow Wintergreen Resort opens for ski season this coming Saturday December 8th. They’ve been making snow all week and it looks like they are about to make it official!

Don’t be looking for snow over the next several days as we’ll see much warmer temperatures by the end of the weekend into early next week. Rain enters the forecast by Monday, though we may see a few sprinkles or flurries late Thursday night into Friday morning, but nothing more.

In a separate workshop at Nelson County High School, Bob and Mary are collaborating with several talented high school musicians to write the melody create instrumental accompaniment for one of the songs. These students will perform with the 4th graders at the Thursday concerts.
Two concerts are scheduled for Thursday at Rockfish River Elementary. At 9:30 a.m. the 4th graders will perform their songs for the 3rd and 5th grade students. The evening concert at 7:00 p.m. is open to parents and the community.
