Monday definitely didn’t feel at all like late Fall or early Winter, and today won’t feel much like it either. A perfect day for the little fellow above to bask in the warm day. Our faithful reader Ann Strober of Nellysford sent this one in recently. If you’ve been reading our site for very long, you’ve seen many of the neat pictures Ann sends along from time to time. We appreciate all of your nice work Ann!

Though skies remained cloudy most of the day Monday, we still managed to make it to the low 70’s in the valley and the low 60’s upon the mountain at Wintergreen. We have an area of moderate temps in the region and it will remain here for much of the week until a cold front makes it through by Thursday evening. A stationary front will remain across Virginia for most of that time keeping on and off again chances for rain for the week.

Dynamics change by the weekend giving us a chance for snow Saturday night. That’s still way to far out to predict with any accuracy, but there is the chance.

Ben Smith

Okay, I never made it out of cub scouts, but I don’t even remember my friends talking about this, but sure enough here it is. Betsy Smith, Angel in the Sky from page 37 of the December ’07 issue of NCL, and proud mom of Ben Smith in Roseland sent us this picture.

Here’s what Betsy said:

Hey Tommy,

The Piney River Boy Scout Troop of America 32 just had their Court of Honor Awards. Many received badges and some earned a higher rank. Ben just earned the first scout rank of Tenderfoot. The ritual of earning the honor of this particular rank gave me a chuckle.

As new scout parents, Stuart and I were surprised to learn that Stuart had to turn him upside down while I pinned his new rank patch of Tenderfoot onto the correct pocket – a picture that I attached to this email to bring a grin to your face as well. Ben said his feet went numb by the time I figured out the right pocket to pin his patch on 🙂 I am told that all future ranks don’t require this “upside down” ritual – thank goodness since he will soon be taller than Mom!

Volunteers Give the Best Christmas Gift Ever
Afton, Virginia

nail guns

We’re just a couple of weeks away from Christmas Day and some folks up in Afton are giving the best Christmas gift ever this year. Clyde and Ruth Terry lost their entire home to fire about two weeks ago. Now their fellow fire and rescue family from The Rockfish Valley Volunteer Fire Department, along with friends are pitching in to rebuild their home. They may not make it quite in time for Christmas Day, but they won’t miss it by much. You can read the entire heartwarming story Yvette covered Sunday by clicking here or simply scrolling down.

Temperature wise the weather has been perfect for doing construction. Sunday’s afternoon high here at NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine in Greenfield reached a Spring like 62 degrees. Not so good if you like winter weather. We’ll certainly be taking a vacation from freezing temps for most of this week. By week’s end we’ll see a return to more seasonal temperatures for this time of year. The next several days will be unsettled weather thanks to a stationary front in the area with plenty of clouds and showers from time to time. No one period will see any large amounts of rain, but we will see showers most anytime between now and Thursday. By next weekend we may actually be talking about snow chances once again in the mountains.

Before we move on, lots of things took place this past weekend in Nelson, be sure to check out the topics under Recent Posts to your left to check them all out.

Volunteers Help to Rebuild Home
Afton, Virginia

Ruth-1
Ruth Terry of Deer Field Road in Afton looks on as volunteers work Sunday afternoon to rebuild the house she and her husband Clyde lost two weeks ago to fire.

Story by Tommy Stafford

A couple of weeks ago, Ruth and Clyde Terry were off shopping for groceries in Waynesboro when they got a call from their long time friend and fire chief, Tommy Harvey. “The fire chief called me on my cell phone and told me that the house was on fire,” says Ruth. For over 20 years they were the ones answering calls to someone else’s fire, but this time it was their own home. “We were luckier than most people. I had a shirt in the truck, a pair of boots out in the shed I hadn’t opened yet, We had just bought some groceries so it wasn’t as bad as someone losing their life,” add husband Clyde.

decking
Volunteers place sheets of decking on the roof of the Terry’s new home under construction.

Unfortunately all of their pets were lost in the fire too. “The hardest part was the loss of the pets. I had two cats and one dog. Maggie was the dog, Sugarpop, & Lottabitt,” Ruth continues.

But their house was gone, noting left. “I was the first truck here. When we left the station we knew it was Ruth’s. I had to make the phone call to her.,” says Tommy Harvey Chief of the Rockfish Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

Being a fire and rescue family for more than two decades, folks in the Rockfish Valley Fire Department knew if fire could take it to the ground they could help Ruth and Clyde get it back off the ground. In just two short weeks fellow members of the fire and rescue, builders, and friends, have been pitching in to see that Clyde and Ruth get back in their home as close to Christmas as possible. They probably won’t make it by Christmas Day, but they won’t miss it by much. By Sunday afternoon they were already putting decking down on the roof.

clyde
Clyde Terry, in the red plaid shirt, looks on as his friends and members of his fire and rescue family rebuild their new home.

“We were just determined to get this house back up, not waiting on the insurance company,” adds Chief Harvey.

Clyde and Ruth have lived in their house since the early 80’s. Though they knew their friends would help out, they never expected this much help. “I was expecting that everyone would help some, but I wasn’t expecting them to throw it back real quick,” Clyde says.

2 X 4
By the end of the day Sunday the Terry’s home was in the dry and well on it’s way to completion in a few weeks.

Ruth has seen countless people lose their homes to fire in the past, but says it’s different when it your own. “It’s been really overwhelming, the response of everybody. I could never imagine that all of these people would jump in donating their time.”
