Greenfield Snow
Beginning snowfall in Greenfield, the Rockfish Valley of Nelson County, VA, just after 10 AM EST

Snow continues to fall across most of Central Virginia at this hour. Wrecks are starting to occur in portions of the area as well. Mainly north and east of Nelson at this time, but roads are slowly becoming slick. Let’s be careful out there!

Faithful NCL web reader, John Taylor, sent us this e-mail a bit ago. Traffic Cameras along I-64 also show a light dusting on the interstate. As we work throughout the morning snow will increase from west to east. The air is still very, very, dry so it will take several hours for the atmosphere to moisten up enough for the snow to start reaching the ground in all areas.

More updates later

AUDIO VERSION OF FORECAST (some users may need to click play button twice)

Estimated snowfall for Wednesday via Accuweather.com

Darker purple = 1-2 inches
Lighter purple = 3+ inches

We’re going to skip the weather photo for Wednesday and get right into the forecast. As we first posted Tuesday afternoon. A SNOW ADVISORY has been issued for all of the area beginning at 8 AM Wednesday morning. Forecasters are analyzing the models at this time, but it appears Nelson will get some snow, obviously better chances in the mountains at Wintergreen and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is some question as to the eastern part of Nelson east of 29 where we may see a rain snow mix on Wednesday.

A clipper system can be tough to predict, and that 2-3 inches could be nothing at all. However, it appears right now many of the elements are in play to have at least a nice light to moderate snow in the area by Wednesday evening.

Our Mountain Photographer, Christina Kline, told us they have been making the fool out of snow on the mountain and the approaching system will just add to that!

By Friday, look for a slight shot at sprinkles. By next week temps will warm to near 60 degrees.

Update: 12-4-07 11:00 AM EST
Below I have pasted a portion of the late morning NWS forecast discussion. You’ll see a bunch of gook that makes no sense referring to certain models used to predict weather, but I did see an interesting sentence or two. I have highlighted them in bold.

It would see possible we could see a 2-3 inch snow tonight in some areas. This is still way early for this kind of prediction, and clipper systems move fast, but some factors seem to be lining up. I will want to see the afternoon data and will make another special report later today.
-T-

00z GFS/NAM have come in portraying a more significant clipper
system than what was originally thought. 21z short range ensembles
indicated definite 1+” snow in a 12hr time period in the mountains
tapering to slight chance of an inch near the Blue Ridge (no members
had more than 4″ and spread amongst members was low). 00z GFS/NAM
model runs suggest a 2-4″ snow (slightly higher in upslope
mountains)
using varying techniques such as dgz*omega…maximum temperature in
profile…surface temperature…and 10:1 ratio. As a check…the Garcia method
using the 00z GFS yields a maximum amount of snow in the 4-6″ range.

Lovingston Christmas Parade

The rain this weekend didn’t stop folks from turning out for the annual Lovngston Christmas Parade this past Sunday. And our Hayley Osborne was out there getting the shots despite the rain and the crutches! Not to worry, Hayley is getting better and recovering well, though she’s hard to keep still for very long!

It certainly began feeling like winter weather and Christmas yesterday when those cold winds began blowing in. Even last night the winds stayed up but did begin dying out after midnight. It will still be breezy today but nothing like we saw yesterday. Most of the high winds gusts were confined to the mid 30’s MPH. NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation recorded a gust of 35.3 MPH, this morning it was very cold there with a low in the teens. While NCL-Delfosse Vineyard & Winery recorded a gust of 33 MPH. All of the other NCL stations were around 30 MPH. There were higher gusts, but confined west and north of the BRP. Today the winds will still be breezy, but on their way to settling down late this afternoon and evening. Snow is in the forecast tonight especially up on the mountains. It continues in the forecast Wednesday and Wednesday night. Right now it looks like a dusting of snow in the valley with up to an inch at Wintergreen and along the BRP by the time it ends on Wednesday night. This doesn’t appear to be a significant system right now, but a nice prelude to winter.

By the weekend, temps warm just a bit and there’s a chance of showers by Friday. Temps Sat & Sun will be mainly in the low 50’s. Speaking of the weekend, there’s lots taking place holiday wise. Don’t forget the monthly RVCC pancake breakfast was moved just this month to Sat Dec 8th and it’s followed immediately by the Holiday Community Market held at RVCC. There also a big celebration by six of Nelson’s wineries and our newest member, Blue Mountain Brewery. You can see all of the details by clicking on the Datebook category and using the keyword December to see those and many other events coming up this month.
