There’s a hint of milder weather in the air lately. Yea, the nights are still cold, but have you noticed the the buds on the trees? The buttercups starting to come up, and even the grass looks a little greener lately. That’s a sure sign warmer weather is on the way. Heck, Spring starts in less than two weeks. That means you should start thinking about your garden. Ken and Yvonne Harris at a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 have been getting their plants ready all winter long so you’ll be able to plant this coming Spring. Have you ever been there and met those guys? What a nice couple! They’re products are as close to farm as possible. You won’t find ingredients you can’t read or pronounce at their place!

They specialize in local produce and meats like:

-Hydroponic tomatoes and cucumbers
-On Farm & Locally Grown Lettuce
-Local, organically Raised Farm Eggs
-Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with lots of fruit trees ready for the spring planting! Spring begins on March 20!

And coming soon, that new farm market we just mentioned, featuring hot teas & coffee, muffins, and bread. They’re open now, but be looking for the grand opening of the new and larger farm market in just a few days!

Visit them on the web at www.amfog.net or call them at 540-456-7100.

Monday was a fairly pleasant day for the first full day of EDT vs EST. We’re on the summer hours until way on later this year in the fall. Was kind of strange being out in the late afternoon hours with plenty of daylight. We’ve got lots of time left before the days get shorter, that occurs in late June., till then, look for the daylight getting longer until then.

Temperature wise Monday was fairly pleasant if your were out in the sun. There were some light breezes that made it feel kind of cool, but most everyone made it near 60° for an afternoon high. The mountains reached the lower 50’s. Overnight Monday after midnight, some areas picked up light rain or drizzle, even some light snow showers in the some of the mountain areas, but nothing to get excited over. Technically precipitation, but otherwise not much. The remainder of the week is pretty uneventful and temperatures will slowly rise each day making it feel like a precursor to Spring. There is a chance for rain back in the forecast by Friday, but temperatures remain relatively mild during the period. Overnight, lows don’t even go below freezing after tonight in the valley regions, and barely dip below 32° on the mountains between now and Friday.

Here’s some additional info Taylor sent along about the band:
Our Show this past year was featuring music from Styx. In the show, there was a drum break where the whole band danced, I actually recorded it and put it on youtube.com In that video they had just learned the dance about 30 minutes before that. Thats how good these kids are!

The Band begins in the summer at the end of July and the beginning of August for Band Camp which is usually about 2 weeks long for some of them. The days go from 8am-5pm, then once school starts its 2 hours after school 3 days a week, 4 days a week when we have a game or competition. So a lot of practice on the field and off the field goes into our show. Then our completions we travel all over. We have been locally to Staunton, Stuarts Draft, and Amherst. Then we go all the way to Harrisonburg to JMU and we then went to Richmond. In previous years we have been the Danville, Lynchburg, and 3 years ago we had the chance to travel to Disney World and march down towards the castle. We also perform yearly at the Christmas Parade in Lovingston. All this is usually done from the end of July to the Beginning of December. Marching Band is our biggest ensemble of the year. Let me know if you have any questions, I think I covered all of our bases.

The last half of the weekend was sunny and dry, but we started off with lots of rain and wind. Just about everyone got at least an inch or two of rain before it all ended late Saturday. That’s makes some pretty nice rain totals for the month so far. We’ll be appreciating that as we head toward those hotter days of summer in just 2-3 months when things tend to dry out quickly.

Monday will be a mighty nice day. Still just a tiny chill in the air, but we will easily warm to the low and mid 50’s for afternoon highs in the valley with a light southerly wind. Monday night we could see a few snow showers across the area as a weak low pressure meanders through. Most of the week looks dry and milder until we reach Friday when rain is back in the forecast, but temps overall are beginning to moderate on the average as we are quickly entering the final few days of official winter during the next two weeks.

Opening-HO

At 12:45 Saturday afternoon, Nelson County fans started showing up at
Amherst High School to watch the boy’s basketball team compete in the
state’s quarterfinals. The game was Nelson versus Chesterfield. The
gym’s bleachers were overflowing with Nelson County fans who were
decked out in green and gold. Yellow pompons waving back and forth,
painted faces, green Mardi Gras beads, and homemade signs asking “Who
you wit.” Nelson fans were stomping, chanting, yelling
and…..screaming! There was not a calm nerve in the room. Even the
Nelson County High School faculty was there, (some were even dressed
up). The pep band played as the cheerleaders, parents, friends and
avid nelson fans cheered the Governors on. Play by play. By 3:45 the
Nelson Governors won the game 66 to 61.

“The Governors, who were out sized by Chesterfield, were able to rely
on their quickness and their precise outside shooting to carry them to
a victory in the state quarter final and to move on the VCU on
Wednesday to the State’s semi-finals,” said one of the Nelson fans there Saturday night.

Weekends are a great time to get out and check out the local markets. A must see is a.m. Fog on the Albemarle-Nelson County Line along Route 151. Spring planting is just around the corner and there’s nothing like the smell of fresh corn and tomatoes. If you don’t have the time to grow it yourself, Ken & Yvonne Harris do it for you. I like these guys cause they are just like us, regular folks with a great product. There’s such a homey kind of feeling when you go to a.m. Fog. Expect rain showers to end by Saturday afternoon, we may hear a clap of thunder before the rain ends. It will become very, very windy late day. Milder weather works in by next week.

Oddly the area where I once forecasted weather back in the mid-south is under a Winter Storm Warnings for snow accumulations between 4-8 inches. That’s in a place that seldom sees snow!

The rain hangs around Saturday morning before giving way to some slight sun in the afternoon, but look for some very windy conditions developing Saturday and Saturday night. There is a wind advisory in effect 4PM until midnight Saturday. Sunday looks uneventful with partly sunny skies and temps in the upper 40’s to lower 50’s

Their new Farm Market is opening up this month. They grow and sell as close to the farm as you can get. At a.m Fog you don’t have to wonder what warehouse or even what country your food comes from! – Ken & Yvonne specialize in local produce and meats like:

I’m not going to talk very much about weather today. I’ll hit the high points, but Thursday’s going to be such a nice day there’s not much to add.

Andy Waldeck from the March 2008 issue of NCL.

Yesterday afternoon I got a pretty troubling e-mail from Jenn Rhubright, she’s the wife of Andy Waldeck on this month’s cover of NCL. Jenn also shoots for our magazine from time to time. In short they are just top notch people. Jenn and Andy recently returned from India. They were there on business, but while there Jenn was shooting a story for our upcoming April issue of NCL as well. You won’t see that story, but that’s only a tiny unimportant part of what’s happened to Jenn and Andy. Here’s part of Jenn’s e-mail to me Wednesday:

Hi Tommy,
Just wanted to give you a heads up that our house was broken into yesterday.
Andy and I came home around 6 or so from work.
Our 3 dogs were here along with the neighborhood dog that hangs out here.
The burglars stole my entire jewelry box, along with both my cameras.
Sadly, my pictures from India had not been downloaded yet. So they’re gone too.
The worst is that Andy has two very valuable bass guitars.
Both of them are gone…..

That’s just a small part of what they cleaned out from Jenn and Andy’s home out in Arrington. First I was shocked, and now frankly folks, I am just ticked. We don’t know if highlighting Andy in our March issue had anything to do with people breaking into his home. It doesn’t appear that it does, since more personal items seemed to be the target, but whatever the reason, what a bunch of selfish punks that would do this. I know people have burglaries all over the country, but this happens to be to people we know, and the timing is just uncanny. The sheriff’s office is working on the case. I was a cop for ten years and investigated countless burglaries like this. It’s always hard to see this happen to anyone and the cops alone won’t ever solve this.

These guys need your help. They’ve already faxed a list of everything taken to area pawn shops and the like. Click here to link to the entire theft list. If you seen anything that looks familiar on the street call them or call the sheriff’s office at the number’s listed. I want them to get their stuff back, but I really want deputies to catch these bums, the crud that did this. There’s been a rash of break ins lately in many parts of the county. Last week it was Strawberry’s place at The Blue Ridge Pig in Nellysford. For 20 years never a problem, then he leaves for a well deserved vacation and his place gets hit. If we all keep our eyes and ears open we’ll find the people doing this. Lucky for the burglars they broke into a home that was unoccupied, next time they might not be so lucky…..

In weather, look for a great day Thursday – there is a chance for rain in the valley and a rain snow mix mountains by late Friday into early Saturday. Sunday looks partly sunny and a warming trend begins next week. We’ll remind you again tomorrow through the weekend, but don’t forget the time changes this weekend, we spring forward!

Here’s how Jace describes the makeup of The Red Drum Ramblers in his own humorous words!

Hi Tommy,
Wow! That fiddle will blast open your eyelids faster than yesterday’s coffee re-heated over an open flame, eh?!
I caught the initial Red Drum Ramblers offering this morning, and wanted to contact and update you Here’s the scoop: The Red Drum Ramblers are Jace Goodling (fiddle and vocals) and Tim Scruby (pronounced just like it’s spelled, kind of rhyming with Scooby, as in …Doo, but with an “R” thrown in) clawhammer banjo. That’s our “normal” line-up. We are both actually certifiable “Natives” to the area. Tim grew up in Waynesboro and lives just over the county line (on the Albemarle side) in Afton. I grew up in an apple orchard just on the other side of Batesville and have lived the last twenty one years in Afton. (You know the story: grew up, went to college, learned “go west, young man”, and made it seven miles to Afton….been here ever since)
For this recording, we were fortunate enough to have our good friend and excellent musician, Jesse Fiske, accompanying us on guitar and harmonica. Jesse is one of the original members of the band, “The Hackensaw Boys” from Charlottesville, currently touring all around the western part of the United States. Jesse did the recording for us at his house (thus the note, “Jess and Jen’s” on the CD,,,, his girlfriend, Jen Fleish, plays acoustic dog house bass for “Jim Waive and The Young Divorcees”). We’ve actually never recorded an official CD, as in a commercial venture worthy of commerce and trade, so you have the “original”…..and as I mentioned, they’re all “one takes”: something that Monkeyclaus folks probably shudder to think about. HA! But even if there is some demented soul out there that would want to hear more of our music, he’d have to come see us “Live”. In addition to the Nelson Farmers’ Market, we perform at Stone Soup Cafe, a neat little book store/ cafe’ on Main street in Waynesboro. We’re also available for house parties and barn dances. We play “old time” music, NOT blue grass, and we like to stay fairly loyal to the old time mountain music songs as we learned them: ragged but right.
Thanks much,
Jace
