If you’re like most of us today, you’re getting a bit concerned about just exactly where your food comes from, not to mention how much it costs just to make the trip to pick it up! With gas over $3.00 a gallon that trip to the big grocery to save a few pennies doesn’t seem to make as much CENTS anymore! Ken and Yvonne Harris have the answer to both of those concerns. One, they either grow right on the farm or they buy as close to the farm as possible. And you don’t have to drive very far either. They’re just up the road on Route 151 at the Nelson – Albemarle County Line in Afton.

When you stop by you’ll find:

-Hydroponic tomatoes and cucumbers
-On Farm & Locally Grown Lettuce
-Local, organically Raised Farm Eggs
-Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with lots of fruit trees ready for the spring planting! Spring begins this Thursday, can you believe it’s already here!

And coming soon, that new farm market under construction now, featuring hot teas & coffee, muffins, and bread. They’re open now, but be looking for the grand opening of the new and larger farm market in just a few days!

Visit them on the web at www.amfog.net or call them at 540-456-7100.

A touch of winter made a brief return over the weekend both in temperatures and precipitation. Just a tad of snow fell on the mountains as the rain came to an end very early Sunday morning. Our weather watcher, John Taylor, on the mountains dropped us a quick note yesterday:

“We had a light dusting of snow overnight most of which has melted.
No icing apparent at this altitude”

John’s around 3500 feet, but obviously no problems on Sunday and certainly not today. Thanks for checking in John, he always keeps posted on the mountain weather.

Monday started really chilly with some of the coldest temps we’ve seen in several days. Today will warm up nicely, with even warmer temps by mid-week, but also a chance for rain again starting as early as Tuesday night. Rain continues Wednesday with even a chance for an isolated thundershower.

By the first day of Spring on Thursday, look for partly sunny skies and temps in the mid 50’s. Right now Easter Weekend looks partly sunny with temps in the mid 50’s to lower 60’s.

One of our favorites here, Robin Wynn takes us out with Hate How I Love You So.

Have a great Monday everyone!

Robin-Bridge
Whether playing solo, or accompanied by her six-piece band, Robin Wynn’s shows are marked with high energy and good spirits, with her distinctive, smooth-like-honey/sharp-as-a-tack vocals cresting the wave. With her ear for hooks, Robin writes music you swear you’ve heard before, yet is always unique and fresh, often drawing comparisons to Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams at her most “Americana,” Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Liz Phair at her rockingest.

A hard-working bunch of players, Robin and her band performed over a hundred shows up and down the east coast in 2006, gathering enthusiasts at every stop. Bandmates include Lea Calvani (Dirty Dishes) on percussion and vocals, John Allietta (Thrum, Naked Puritans) on drums, Clayton Avent (Six Day Bender) on cello and guitar, Blake Wheeler (Bleak, Goldenhour) on bass and vocals, and Mark Goldstein on guitar, keyboards, and vocals.

Spring 2007 marks the release of Robin Wynn’s latest studio achievement “A Few Dusty Miles,” a full-length CD of eleven new songs which includes such favorites from her recent tour dates as the sultry ballad “Bottle,” the quirky half-time rag “Sweet Sally,” and “Soldier,” an instant pop classic that will stay in your head for days – and is also available to listen on her page at www.myspace.com/robinwynn

Not that my folks would ever know it, I never wanted to do it at the time, but some of my fondest memories were those summer nights on the farm back in Tennessee shucking corn or shelling peas. I distinctly remember when Neil Armstrong took that first step on the moon, I was a kid sitting in the floor and my parents were shelling peas fresh from the garden. Good food takes you back, fresh food from the garden really takes you back.

Ken & Yvonne New Market

That’s what Ken & Yvonne Harris are creating at a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151. They grow and sell as close to the farm as possible. But it’s not just about selling produce produce, meats and plants, it’s about a lifestyle they live by and one they want to pass on to you.

Just look at what they specialize in, you just won’t find this in your average market:

-Hydroponic tomatoes and cucumbers
-On Farm & Locally Grown Lettuce
-Local, organically Raised Farm Eggs
-Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with lots of fruit trees ready for the spring planting! Spring begins on March 20!

A quick thanks to Catherine Lively for the photo at the top of today’s weather. Now this one got my attention! Catherine said they were riding bikes at Rose Mill in the south end of the county when they passed this and couldn’t resist. Not to worry, maybe the upcoming rain over the next day or so will give them some water to row in! Thanks again Catherine for sending in the pic!

We’ll still have the mild temperatures Friday, but clouds begin increasing and the chances for scattered rain showers enters the forecast by Friday afternoon and evening. A substantial area of low pressure makes a run at Central Virginia bringing more widespread rain Saturday night.

By Sunday we’ll have sunshine moving back in. Temps will not be as warm, but still not cold. A light jacket should do the trick! By next week we near 60° by mid week, but rain is back in the forecast as well.

Wednesday started out with a few clouds but quickly became sunny. Winds were chilly out of the north for the morning hours, but shifted southerly by afternoon warming up temperatures nicely.

Thursday will be a spectacular day with afternoon temperatures easily making it into the mid 60’s in most areas. We may even see the temps rise to near 70° in a few locations. Unlike yesterday, winds will become breezy today from the south around 10-20 MPH in the afternoon.

On Friday rains chances reenter the forecast, with more organized showers Saturday. Since temperatures will be fairly mild Friday, it’s not out of the question to have an isolated clap of thunder here or there.

Those showers continue on Saturday. By Saturday night the rain may briefly mix with snow before ending Sunday morning. Temps cool a bit over the weekend before rebounding nicely back into the 60’s next week.

Here’s some additional info Taylor sent along about the band:
Our Show this past year was featuring music from Styx. In the show, there was a drum break where the whole band danced, I actually recorded it and put it on youtube.com In that video they had just learned the dance about 30 minutes before that. Thats how good these kids are!

The Band begins in the summer at the end of July and the beginning of August for Band Camp which is usually about 2 weeks long for some of them. The days go from 8am-5pm, then once school starts its 2 hours after school 3 days a week, 4 days a week when we have a game or competition. So a lot of practice on the field and off the field goes into our show. Then our completions we travel all over. We have been locally to Staunton, Stuarts Draft, and Amherst. Then we go all the way to Harrisonburg to JMU and we then went to Richmond. In previous years we have been the Danville, Lynchburg, and 3 years ago we had the chance to travel to Disney World and march down towards the castle. We also perform yearly at the Christmas Parade in Lovingston. All this is usually done from the end of July to the Beginning of December. Marching Band is our biggest ensemble of the year. Let me know if you have any questions, I think I covered all of our bases.

Here are our results from our competitions this past year:
The Nelson County High School Marching Governors concluded their season with a competition at Mills E. Godwin High School in Richmond Virginia.

Got this from our buddy Anne Marie Jones on Tuesday from Wintergreen Resort:

WINTERGREEN, VA—Don’t let the balmy weather fool you. Some of the best slope conditions of the year at available right now atop the Blue Ridge Mountains at Wintergreen Resort. Thanks to energetic snowmaking, the resort remains open with an average snowbase of 16-35 inches.

“The time we spent building our snowbase was well spent,” said Jay Roberts, Vice President of Mountain Operations at Wintergreen Resort. “Guests continue to compliment us on the quantity and quality of the snow on all of our trails, including our tubing hills. It’s great to see so many enjoying great conditions along with the great weather. Based on the current conditions, we fully anticipate being open until at least March 23, so there’s plenty of good skiing left.”

For the most current information on slope conditions, guests should visit www.wintergreenresort.com.

For skiers and snowboarders, the 11,000-acre Blue Ridge Mountain resort offers 25 slopes, featuring extensive beginner-to-expert terrain. Add Wintergreen’s two incredible snowtubing parks, a terrain park, high-speed chairlifts and one of the country’s top snowmaking systems, and it’s no wonder Wintergreen was voted the “Best Ski Resort” by the readers of the WashingtonPost.com for the second year running!

There’s still good skiing on the mountain so check it out, there’s only a short time left to hit the slopes before warmer weather moves in!

We appreciate Ann sending us the photo, and remind you if you’d like to send a picture in of something nice for the weather, simply send it to: weather -at- NelsonCountyLife.com Instead of using “-at-” use @ – we put that there to keep those nasty internet robots from grabbing our addresses and sending us spam!

Tuesday was even better than Monday. Did you get a chance to enjoy the outdoors yesterday? Temps again warmed nicely to the lower 60’s in the valley and low 50’s mountains. It felt even nice as a southerly wind began kicking in for the afternoon bringing in milder temps. Wednesday will be a tad better, though a westerly wind will make it feel a little chilly if your right out in it. And Thursday, a very nice one. I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t pull out a 70° degree reading on Thursday in some locations.

It’s pretty easy to see that our temps are moderating now with each passing day. We’re by no means out of the winter business, but the milder temps rebound much more quickly as we head toward Spring.

By Friday afternoon and Saturday we do have the chance for rain in the forecast, but temperatures stay relatively mild even with the rain. Other than those couple of days the forecast is pretty uneventful over the extended period.
